SKIING JAPAN: Backcountry Skiing near Niseko, Hokkaido
This is a bit of a regular spot for backcountry skiers visiting the Niseko area. The terrain is some of the steepest that you can access around Niseko and the snow quality is always very good.
One of the good things about backcountry skiing in Hokkaido is that it is very accessible. The approaches aren't so long so that you can get the maximum amount of vertical in a day.
And hot springs are never far away either. Hokkaido apre skiing is the hot spring!

SKIING JAPAN: What’s it Like Skiing Asahidake?
Asahidake is probably one of the most misunderstood ski destinations in Hokkaido. In recent years it's popularity has exploded. One of the reasons is the quality of the snow that you will often ski here and the regular snowfalls during the winter season. It is the only real lift served skiing in the Daisetsuzan National Park, discounting Kurodake with the short 150 vertical lift at the top of t...
SKIING JAPAN: Testing Pomoca Free Pro 2.0 Skins

Skins are one of the most important pieces of equipment that you have. With the job of guiding I look to have the best that I can buy. Recently, more and more of my colleagues using Pomoca skins and they seemed to function very well. So I decided to buy some Pomoca Free Pro 2.0 skins. The local mountain shop in Sapporo that I usually go to had some in the size that I needed, so I reserved them....
JAPAN SKIING: A Spring Day at ASAHIDAKE

There is still good Powder skiing at Asahidake in March. One thing I like about later in the season is that we have better weather. There are many days at asahidake here during January and February where visibility is very low. It was a busy day initially but for the ropeway, but soon dissipated. SKIING JAPAN: Ski Touring in Tokachidake

There is a lot of really good touring options in the Tokachidake area which is at the southern end of the Daisetsuzan Park. This is really the center of Backcountry skiing in Hokkaido. There are multiple access points into the mountains from here And there is genuine alpine terrain. The tree skiing is also very good in the old growth spruce forests. Today we had beautiful weather as it was the ...
SKING JAPAN: A Record Breaking Powder Day in Niseko

There are deep days and then there a deep days in Niseko. This was one of those very deep days with it the gates only barely opened due to the incredible amount of snow that fell in 48 hours. We had been lining up at the cheer on moiwa and a patroller sneaked in front of us. It was perfect timing as when we got to the top he was just opening gate six. There were three others in front of us and ...
SKIING JAPAN: Skiing the live volcano of Mt Tokachi

Mount Tokachi is a live volcano at the southern end of the Daisetsuzan national Park. Actually the live volcano is “Mae Takashi” or “Front Tokachi.” The main peak is actually behind it. On this day we had a group from Scotland and Australia. It’s not often that you can combine really good weather with fantastic snow but today we had it. The wind steadily increased and at the peak it was a very ...

We have been running backcountry skiing tours With Snowmobile assistance for a number of years now. On this day we had the antipodean crew of Stephen, Terry and Sue. SKIING JAPAN: Checking the Tokachidake Snowpack
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.5 месяцев назад
In early December we always go up into the Daisetsuzan National Park to check the snow pack. Just across the valley from Furano is the Tokachidake area which is at the southern end of the range. The main objective is to see the depth of the snow and the coverage. It can take a while to ski safely up there as there are bushes which grow over 2 meters and these need to be covered. We will look at...

Any day where there is good visibility at asahidake is a good day! It is great to be able to see the billowing fumaroles on the volcano. When you combine the good visibility with great snow then you’ll have an amazing day. Up until this season and there hasn’t been a ski patrol at asahidake yet but it seems like they now have a volunteer patrol. They may not be in attendance every day but it is...

You don’t actually have to pre-tension the clip before attaching to skis tail. Attach it a tad loose and then pull on the strap to get the tension you want.

Your jackson hole crew all love and use these pomocos (fyi, i do find I need to press them down once on the ski so snow doesn't get under and I also sometimes do the back clip off on the side then slip to the back as easier) enjoy!
