BACKCOUNTRY SNOWBOARDING NISEKO ニセコ; With views of Hokkaido’s Fuji of the North

Once March arrives in Niseko, the days get a little bit longer and warmer. It is not uncommon to be skiing and snowboarding good corn snow on the south faces and dry powder on the north faces.
That’s exactly the conditions that we got on this particular day snowboarding on Mt Shiribetsu. The snow on the north face had a wind crust but about 3 to 4 cm of new snow on top just to soften it up.
We thought that we were a little late for the corn on the south face, but we’re pleasantly surprised. It is a beautiful south facing slope that is nice and open to snowboard, or ski for that matter.
It was great to have views of the surrounding area from the peak of Shiribetsudake. In particular stunning views out to the west Of Mt Yotei which is also known as the ‘Fuji of the North.’ To the south is a caldera lake called Shikotsuko and just beyond that is the ocean.
Most of the group were ascending on snow shoes although we had one split border as well.
The combination of good company, skiing and snowboarding, and stunning views made for a great day out.
ニセコでは3月に入ると、少しずつ日が長くなり、暖かくなってきます。南面では良質なザラメ雪、北面ではサラサラのパウダーを滑ることも珍しくありません。
この日の尻別岳はまさにそのようなコンディションでした。北面の雪はウィンドクラストでしたが、その上に3～4センチほどの新雪が積もっていて、柔らかくなっている。
南面のザラメ雪を滑るには、タイミングが少し遅かったかなと思ったが、嬉しい驚きでした。美しい南向きの斜面で、スノーボードでも、それどころかスキーでも気持ちよく滑れました。
尻別岳の頂上から周辺を見渡せるのは最高でした。特に、「北の富士」とも呼ばれる羊蹄山の西側に広がる素晴らしい景色は格別。南には支笏湖というカルデラ湖があり、そのすぐ向こうには海が広がっています。
スプリットボーダーも1名いましたが、ほとんどのグループがスノーシューで登ってました。
楽しい仲間、スキーやスノーボード、そして素晴らしい景色が組み合わさって、最高の一日となりました。
