  • Generally we are using quite wide powder skis for the deep snow conditions of Hokkaido. It’s mostly related to flotation and speed.
A lot of locals will describe good powder conditions as being fast. In even really deep snow wider skis will help with speed.
The All round skis which I will use for ski touring are the Volkl V-Works katana skis which are 113 under foot. These are mounted with a ATK tech bindings which is still quite a light set up for the back country. I will use the skis on all but the deepest powder days in the side country as well.
I really like the vocals for the deep Japan powder snow because of the shape. They are flat and a foot and have slight rocker Which tapers to the tip and the tail. Imagine a speed boat on the water. This is how the skis feel in fresh snow.
For the really deep days in the resort side-country in Hokkaido, I have some Blizzard Spur skis which are 124 underfoot. These just provide a little bit more flotation and speed in deep powder.
On this particular day I brought my Volkl skis to Furano Ski Resort because the storm had brought a lot of wind and I wasn’t sure on the conditions. It turned out that the powder was deeper than expected.
Likewise, Snowboarders can benefit by being on powder specific boards for the deep snow conditions of Hokkaido. With the added surface area and a wider nose, this can help with speed. By being more centered on the snowboard, It’s can help with control as you do not have to put as much weight on the back foot.
Ken had a Bataleon ‘Surfer’ snowboard which he likes to use for the Furano powder. It has a swallowtail and he was riding a 159 cm length board that day.

I agree, I’ve been riding 108 in the powder there but want something a touch wider between 115-125mm

I’m looking at Faction La Machina at 126 waist width for next season. Light weight for climbing and flat at center with tip and tail rocker.

@@bikerider270 Hi, I have the La Machine on order, for long term use in Hakkoda Aomori. Did you get them or have any suggestions for boots, skins and bindings please? I confess to being a beginner having only rented skis years ago in Japan, and so I am looking to start again late in life!

Ordered the G3 zed 12 tech bindings. Pomoco skins when the time comes. Boots may be the some Dabelo model I am looking at. Plans permitting I can get to Japan before the snow melts in 2024 Very early and warm spring this year I see.

@@bikerider270 I have skied the original La Machine 126 waist width this season for couple days. I would say it's so amazing to ski in deep days. So much float which is expected but yet super easy to turn that I couldn't believe it's 126 under foot. It's very light and I paired them with a griffon duke pt 12 for BC. Totally love it!
