    Interesting stuff! We had a family friend who was a 2mm finescale modeller who once sat me down and showed me building 2mm finescale track out of copper clad when I was around 12 or 13! He even gave me one of these etched nickel silver chassis kits and body's to try, I think I ended up giving it a go myself, but glued it together! It rolls and still exists in a box today. If 12 year old me could do it I'm sure you'll definitely have no problem 😂 Sadly I haven't been in contact with the family friend for more than a decade, but I've still got the soldering iron and track jigs he gave me to give 2mm finescale a go!

    O dear! I have purchased books from the 2mm Scale Association. They are like your local drug dealers. They are very friendly and everything is cheap to buy. But be warned once you start it is hard to stop. You know that 0 gauge is the only true gauge! Brass wagon kits are all brass, no plastic bits. I hope you recover soon. I worry about you. Good luck, good to see you back.

    Huddersfield is my home town. They have recently announced the demolition of the gasworks so it won't be there much longer! The North Eastern Gas Board ran the gas works railway. They had an Andrew Barcley 0-4-0 saddle tank. If anyone is interested there are 4 great pictures of this railway in a book called 'railway memories No.13' Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Batley by Robert Anderson. It would make a great model railway.

    9:40 X-) I love that the gasometer map, the important *_largest, most ornate Script_* is reserved for *_Urinal_* (left side) and *_Water Cooler_* (right hand) ...really that is very interesting! I was reading the Harrogate book last year and gas is a fascinating industry! Poking around looking for inspiration is half the fun (that's why I was reading about the Harrogate Gas Works last year) -- so thanks for sharing the Huddersfield Corporation Gas Works Railway :-) ...I do see murmurings about it being demolished soon, so hopefully _someone_ will preserve it as a model? Hi from California, btw! I worked for a steel processing industry and we received railcars off-site: the spur is at 38.02393775436707, -121.88611937405042 ...the coil car lids get removed and a heavy-duty forklift transloads coils onto flatbed trucks right there on the gravel pad. The loading dock is for receiving coils in boxcars as well. Max size is 60" wide coils, 40k lbs (20 tons) /each. They can go for months without any activity and then be non-stop receiving (something to do with the price of steel), which means non-stop trucks to move it all the half-mile to the warehouse and processing.

    Huddersfeld Gasworks looks very cool. I’ve a dapol LBSCR 7mm terrier and too many coaches, and I want to depict a scene in London with a brightly lit station at night, full of life, with a radiant gasworks display building adjacent, in almost bas relief, a single siding in front opening to the right to a car lift, which goes down to a second, basement, dark and foreboding level, where the business of the gasworks takes place, amidst the squalor of, say Spital Fields, pale people on the ground and standing under a bridge on a bitter, damp night in December 1888. Two level layout, shelf mounted in from 6’-8’ length and 18” wide. I’m fascinated by the lack of context in layouts and remember that the institutions we represent lived beside and did ill as well as good. We don’t really want those worlds again. I’m attracted too by the art of layouts, wanting to really tell a story, using lighting, color, and arrangement very much. I’m imagining a version of Heddersfeld set in 1890s southeastern PA, in American n-scale or possibly HO. Wondering what to do with a prewar, PRR B6sb 0-6-0 (Rapido 2025 release). You seem to have a real fond affection for your trains; please be encouraged, there’ll be another train when it comes. I’m looking forward to more images of that fantastic graffitied coil car! Be well and dream on.

    Sorry brother. Turn off the lights. Close the door and go upstairs. June is here (almost). Partake in summer and leave this for the season. The best part of model railroading, is that it’s always there waiting for you when you are ready again. Your fans will understand. Even chocolate cake gets old after the fourth piece. Maybe this is a sign of a greater plan. We’ll meet again on the other side!

    I feel for you, friend. Years ago I was excitedly carrying a bin of trains down to the basement, and I foolishly thought I could carry it one handed like a platter over my head. Well, it fell and several items were broken. I was very cross about it for quite awhile and couldn't forgive myself for not being more careful. What compounds the issue is that as we get older, we drop things and trip more often. While it might take a little time to get back in the swing again, I will be looking forward to your next video. Your enthusiasm is infectious, and I'll have you know I greatly enjoy your layouts. Be well.

    Whilst the graphics weren't my cup of tea (not from a presentation standpoint but more my lack of knowledge of things graphic beyond Times New Roman and Verdana), I enjoyed your views on the American model press. I've found them to be flat since the 80's after authors like Malcolm Furlow, who was a great "why and how" author rode off into the sunset. I'm not really sure that new ownerships can save them, they basically regurgitate the same old concepts in a different wrapper.

    Hello Ian, I drove and fired Terrier 662 Martello on the West Somerset Railway in December 2007. Driving up the cutting to Washford the track was wet and the engine started slipping; I shut and opened the regulator quickly till the wheels gained traction. I purchased the Dapol O gauge Terrier 672 Fenchurch as it is the same colour. How easy would it be to rename Fenchurch as Martello? I would have to change the name and change the cab plates to 662 plus the buffer bar.

I found this page on the Rapido website that lists quite a few methods to try. rapidotrains.com/warranty/product-support/removing-factory-applied-artwork? Hi Ian thank you for another interesting video. Lime mortar was used to build buildings in early England. The materials used then would fail if modern mortar is used. Therefore lime mortar is still used today to conserve old buildings. Builders lime and agricultural lime are two different products. I have a number of brass wagon kits from Jim McGowen of Connoisseur Models. The brass kits use Slaters wheels. I have not built them yet, but I have purchased all the nice tools required.

    You can clamp (I've even used tape) a straightedge to the plywood for the jig saw base to slide against and get very straight cuts. A sanding block with coarse then finer sandpaper will allow truing up the edges of the ply to the wood frame after assembly.

  • @user-pq2ed6yj4s
    @user-pq2ed6yj4s 2 месяца назад

    Hi Ian. In the UK we have Wickes diy. If you buy ply sheets from them they cut them for you on a machine. Two cuts are free then a small charge for extra cuts. The board is easier to carry home once cut. I have some Parkside wagons which I have not built yet. If you are struggling with the build, then I certainly will. Good luck.

      Yes. That was the case with the larger DIY stores over here for a while. There were large saws in the lumber department for an assistant to do the job for you. But those disappeared. Perhaps no-one used the service or perhaps people decided that it was too much of a liability to have such equipment on the shop floor.

    I have a friend who has a basement filling N Scale layout. In one area, he has a broad sweeping curve with a river at the front. He made 3 different removable scenes to cover part of the river when he wants to change the view. A forest scene, a small town scene and a road construction scene and they all fit in beautifully. There was a modeler here who became tired of the large amount of advertising and the stale vision of the "big two" model railroading magazines so he began publishing his own quarterly publication. I liked it, all modeling and no fluff. He published it for a few years before shutting it down.

    Hello Ian, another interesting video. My O gauge layout is built on three 1200 x 400 x 100mm ready made plywood baseboards. I have built three 900 long x 200 wide x 100mm deep box sections that plug into the back of the 1200 x 400 x 100mm baseboards using pine wood dowls. This makes the layout 600mm wide. (1200mm = 4' 400mm = 16" 900mm = 3' 200mm = 8" 600mm = 2' 100mm = 4") The three 900 x 150mm sections are the scenic part of the layout with low relief buildings on them. Using six boards means it is easier to move and store the layout without the scenic part getting damaged. I can change the time period of the layout by changing the scenic boards. This is still a work in progress.

    • @MicroModelRailwayDispatch

      I’ve considered concepts where I could swap in different foregrounds and backgrounds. With so many industries being just a siding off a main line. It would be easy to model just the railroad right of way, and then add different foregrounds and backgrounds, changing the locale in a matter of minutes. I mentioned it on my old Protocrastinator blog protocrastinator.blogspot.com/2010/08/pages-from-sketchbook.html
