I always pause videos when I’m typing in a comment so I’m not distracted. Did I ever laugh when I went back into your video and joined back in with your wonderful thoughts on One. THANK YOU!
And get that cover dirty. We make things to hold. I have some tea already spilled on my copy. A record of human interaction and motion.
    Thank you again!

    Hello Ian, another interesting video.
My O gauge layout is built on three 1200 x 400 x 100mm ready made plywood baseboards.
I have built three 900 long x 200 wide x 100mm deep box sections that plug into the back of the 1200 x 400 x 100mm baseboards using pine wood dowls.
This makes the layout 600mm wide.
    (1200mm = 4' 400mm = 16" 900mm = 3' 200mm = 8" 600mm = 2' 100mm = 4")
The three 900 x 150mm sections are the scenic part of the layout with low relief buildings on them.
Using six boards means it is easier to move and store the layout without the scenic part getting damaged. I can change the time period of the layout by changing the scenic boards.
This is still a work in progress.

I have a friend who has a basement filling N Scale layout. In one area, he has a broad sweeping curve with a river at the front. He made 3 different removable scenes to cover part of the river when he wants to change the view. A forest scene, a small town scene and a road construction scene and they all fit in beautifully.
There was a modeler here who became tired of the large amount of advertising and the stale vision of the "big two" model railroading magazines so he began publishing his own quarterly publication. I liked it, all modeling and no fluff. He published it for a few years before shutting it down.

That mockup is a neat idea. What a wonderful idea to feed that “working on the layout” feeling while still exploring the final planning stages.
I like the addition of the foreground scenery. In a way you could even swap in different kinds of foreground scenery modules to suit different photo compositions or events?

I’ve considered concepts where I could swap in different foregrounds and backgrounds. With so many industries being just a siding off a main line. It would be easy to model just the railroad right of way, and then add different foregrounds and backgrounds, changing the locale in a matter of minutes. I mentioned it on my old Protocrastinator blog protocrastinator.blogspot.com/2010/08/pages-from-sketchbook.html

Check out the modular baseboards at Scale Model Scenery. Very lightweight and dead easy to construct.

I really like the extension bbaseboard apron area, its a great idea. Could you attach it with magnets for speed and simplicity?
