I would add that In ancient times, the roman empire raised troops from everywhere so when a battle had to take place somewhere the Empire fought with legions coming from everywhere (this point joining the one about the empire being way larger than medieval countries). Having entirer legions coming from Spain, Italy, France, Greece etc made it easier to have ginormous armies. Let's add that Rome or Macedonia had WAY more money to pay for weapons and soldiers. Also, those were professionnal soldiers, trained and gaining battles in order to conquer vast lands which they could pillage later. During Middle Age though, many battles were petty territory quarels between two lords using a few knights and peasants. Reminds me a meme I saw not so long ago in which it was exactly the same speech ! x) It said "During Rome time : the romans were outnumbered even though they were 50 000 with 2000 horsemen !" and "During Middle Age : "The king managed to reunite a considerable force of 60 knights, 200 peasants, and his friend Godfrey !" xD

There's a lot of truth in this video, but I think it lets the French military off the hook. The fact is that much of it didn't fight all that hard to resist the Wehrmacht. For instance, it is believed that the French air force actually had increased in strength from the beginning of the Blitzkrieg to the time the French surrendered. Which worked at the time the rule was enacted, but the rule had to be justified on religious grounds to make it stick, so now celibacy is justified by the disciples all having been celibate bachelors--which we know was not the case. What Jesus felt the role of sex in the Kingdom of God would be is a mystery we may never know the answer to, but he clearly did not expect his followers to all have led celibate lives in the world as it was then, and is now. Priestly celibacy today is a sham. While some priests are okay with it, many others resort to living in sin with their housekeepers, having affairs with available women, or marrying in secret--and that's the best case scenario. Many far worse ones occur, as we hear too often. It becomes a place to hide from your own sexuality, which damages the mind and soul, leads to bodily abuse. The rule should be abolished in the Catholic Church, but change comes slowly and painfully to that institution. Which is why I am one of the Lapsed. I believe in what the Church truly stands for--but can only stand for so much hypocrisy. Which to be sure is found wherever humans are found. Religious or not.

Mob activity as we think of it is an outdated business model. There is a fantastic scene from The Sopranos where they are trying to get protection money from a Starbucks, and the manager very politely says he can’t help them and they have to take those issues up with head office.

I've worked fields and helped the neighbors work theirs. My dad is a hobby farmer, having grown on a farm, becoming a cop, retiring and buying himself a small farm. He didn't depend on the income of the fields, we didn't ned to harvest enough to survive the winter and we had the drawbar pull power of 44 horses in the form of a tractor. But it's hard, brutal work from sunset to sundown. I find it a fanciful legend how people think peasants could afford to take such long breaks. You're on a clock farming. Take too long to prepare the field and you'll delay Sowing. Sow too late and the winter cold will kill the crop before you can harvest. Don't weed the field and the harvest will be shit if there's even a harvest. Take too long to harvest and the crop will rot in the fields. They did all of this manually and organically. And their lives depended on it. Winter may not be too cold, might not even snow and it will be enough to kill most crops even today. A poor harvest means starvation. And they didn't have chemical defensives. Pest hit your fields? Though luck. Best you can do is burn it down so HOPEFULLY it doesn't spread.

I remember one of the major wars between Bulgaria and The Eastern Roman Empire in the 14th century was something like 1500 vs 2000 men fighting. Feudalism really is a bad system if you want a big army. Both countries had millions of people yet such small forces.

Wasn't it a United Nations approved and initiated war effort that started as a result of NK invading SK? And didn't at least 21 countries (not only the USA) comprise the UN forces, that fought against NK who was primarily backed by China, while the Soviets provided arms and aircraft, some of which were Chinese or provided to the Chinese? And most importantly, the war never ended, instead they signed a cease-fire that is still in effect.

Personally I think that some (many?) of the numbers of combatants in ancient battles were exaggerated. Think of feeding that many men and providing potable water. Divide number of "claimed combatants" of many of the ancient battles by 2 or 3 and I think that you are about right.
