Skyfall Meets Bach's BWV 813
When a Bach Aria sounds like a James Bond theme! Both in the key of C-minor and utilizing essentially the same bass line, I took the opening of the 4th mov't. (Aria) from J.S. Bach's French Suite 2 in C-minor, BWV 813 (1722) and combined it with the theme song from the movie, Skyfall. 🎹🎬🎶🕵️♀️
Specifically, what I did was take m. 1-2 from the Aria (4th mov't.) from Bach's French Suite 2 and play it in a Ragtime style, followed by the main theme from Skyfall, also in a Ragtime style. Then, I switched tempo and mood to something slower and more dark and moody for a reworking of the same short passages in a different texture. I tried to blend the right hand of Bach's Aria into the melodic tex...

Happy New Year 🎉 2025,!
Thank you, Luc! Happy New Year!💛
I enjoy a lot your Bach, is inspiring and mesmerizing. But this I am not sure. It needs rubato, different colors of sound, specific phrasing and enjoying the complex and beautiful harmonies and lyrics, it gets too material when you perform it. Rachmaninoff is not a composer to nail in one piece, one needs to study then perform it for years before reaching a confortable proximity with. Is about soul, Russian soul. And you are right, it IS dark, so why so much light to put in. Here, Pletnev, a masterclass for Rachmaninoff. ruclips.net/video/-uwnPBGFiXY/видео.html
Soul is soul, passion is passion. One doesn't need to be of a certain nationality. I've had excellent training, Russian-based, in fact.

Wow, that gave me goosebumps. I can see how much effort you have put into it. But it sounds effortlessly and I drown in joy when I just close my eyes and listen to it 😄🤝
Thank you so much!!❤❤
That last few bars just made me emotional. What a nice performance and visualization.
Thank you!❤❤
Astonishing clarity and voice leading. Bach lives on in artists like you! Thank you for sharing this gem.
Thank you so much!❤
You are amazing 🎉

This is not just a dissection of Bach's work but an intermediate to advanced hand independence exercise. 😂
How about something bitonal, like Invention 6 with Partita 1?
You are a gift. I can see Mr. B. giving a chubby thumbs up to your playing! ❤
@@bluebells25 Oh thank you ever so much!!❤️❤️
The harmony in bach is crazy and whenever I go through my copy of the well tempered clavier I always play the chords then I go, wow - I did not expect that.
Brilliant performance Penny! Happy new years to you

Penny, I L O V E Your exploration of the soul and structure of Bach, in such an adventurous, evocative, and bold way, really looking into the structures, harmonies, voice leading, and especially the possibilities for interplay of the contrapuntal phrases,.... from different pieces... is BEAUTIFUL, EXCITING, and excellent ! Keep on... don't question Yourself on the basis of a few idiotic nay sayers. KUDOs, and looking forward to hearing some of Your own original motifs woven into Your own original tapestry!
By the way Have You heard @Parallelfuge (Maria Sharweiss') work. She also has melded several works from Art of Fugue together into delightful amalgams, some with eight concurrent parts. I have a playlist at Geopholus Reed called "Art of Fugue" with about 180 interesting counterpoint pieces which have illuminated my own quest to understand Bach and Fugues, give it a listen.... if You like..... Hope You find it informative.
@@Geopholus Thank you so much!!❤️🎹
❤❤ love your work!! I have limited time on piano so i mostly focus on Bach (of course!!). I recently had the epiphany of "joy of repeating random sections at will...." as opposed to being annoyed that i had not yet mastered a section (as if it were truly possible!). Thanks to you for inspiration - and JB too!!
@@looksee1001 Thank you!🎹
35:29-35:30 what is the harmonic analysis of this strange chord, as well as in bar 16? A fast modulation yes, but what are the spelled out chord functions?
@@luckylicks3497 It’s a little hard to leave detailed analyses in the comment section of a video. Likely a series of seventh chords, though I’m not a theorist.
@pennyplaysbach The beginning of bar 16 has one of the more peculiar chords I've ever heard used by Bach, it's basically a G#7/E# (or Fm7b9, in layman's terms). Theoretically I think it's a "G# maj13 sus2 #11 / E#", someone correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.
At what temperment and tempo must it bache?
@@richardshagam8608 Chef’s choice, I suppose!

I think this is a really cool thing. When i first started playing Bach many years ago, I always did this thing where I would dissect and really look at the chord progressions just like this! Sometimes its fun to change things up a little and really see how amazing Bach was at counterpoint and harmony

Thx. Incredibly impactful .

@@torshavnnewell That’s funny!
very ingenuously 😉
Woah! This is a great idea because nearly all Bach is chain of 5ths anyway so most parts should be directionally compatible
@@wilsonbecker1881 The two pieces both have running triplets, are in a triple meter and major mode, with a similar playful mood and upright character. The chosen passages both moved by step and so I figured they ought to fit together nicely and they did!😀
Tastes a bit like Pokémon! (Seriously though, the composer, Junichi Masuda, behind the original Pokémon games used the Inventions and Sinfonias as his main inspiration to overcome the limitations of audio on the original Gameboys).
@@Eleutherarch As I am clueless about Pokémon and video games, in general, this is good to know!
