I've always loved Bach's keyboard music although I never really understood what it is that makes it so compelling.
Thank you Penny for helping me understand.

As you explained those half-steps in the beginning of the video, it sprang to my mind that Bach also might have seen as something special - and made a whole fugue from it: the c minor fugue in the Well Tempered Clavier 1.

Wow, I did not make that connection and it’s a wonderful one!! Thank you, Burkhard, for noticing and sharing!⚡️🎹

“Bach the non conformist” one of my favorite features, which is why his compositions, although complex, are extraordinary and pleasing to the ear (and soul) 🎵❤️🎶

I love your “cellular” approach to these little masterpieces.. I’m sure Mr. JS B was aware of these textures you are noticing and was very intentional with their implementation

Thank you, Brandon! I’ve never heard it put that way, a “cellular approach.” I suppose, now that I think of it, yes, it is. Really, I am trying to escape the world through the music, and to find answers to keep going. My head has many “other voices” in it besides the ones Bach put on the page. My approach reflects my life experiences. It’s a bit off the wall, to some perhaps, but in my mind and heart, it’s what I cling to and what I find eternally enchanting. It’s not the typical piano tutorial, I realize, so anyone that likes this kind of content is truly my kind of peeps.💚💚

I find this exploration of the fine structure of JSB’s works fascinating.

Thank You Penny. You are extraordinary in your thinking, playing, and teaching of Bach's music. As my uncle Stevie always said, "Interested is interesting", and you are certainly that. I am enriched by your vision as I begin to approach this work on the piano, my second Bach composition.

Thank you, Penny! You're by far the most interesting pianist I follow (I mean that in the best possible way) and have a fascinating way of explaining your understanding of Mr' B's work that really resonates with me. I always learn so much from you!

Thank you, Erin! If I could put out “Here’s how to play fast Bach in 3 easy steps” I suppose I would…or would I? Probably not! My content doesn’t do very well, but I feel I can touch the stars and that my path is full of enchanting stones to turn along the way and so here I am trying to make things work. I really appreciate your nice comment. I do get some hurtful comments from time to time, RUclips holds them in a special bin so creators don’t have to see offensive remarks unless they choose to. It can be hard to suddenly receive one out of nowhere when one’s day is going along ok. Anyway, this is a hard business and kind words really do go a long way, as do views, so thank you so much!❤️❤️

It's worth mentioning that the canon is written in invertible counterpoint at the 15th.That's one of the reasons it works so seamlessly. By the way, the invertible sections can be combined in other ways that Bach didn't actually use in the final composition!

I'm not sure I've ever heard of invertible counterpoint at the 15th. My goodness, this music does leave me in awe time after time!

You’re absolutely right, Erich!! It’s the scale degrees 1, 7, 1, 5, 6. Thanks for sharing! These little cells are the building blocks, certainly to my ears, as a pianist. 🤩💜
