Shattered Space: Starfield's Weirdest World (Spoiler Free Review)
Starfield’s first major expansion, Shattered Space, delivers a focused story in a hand-crafted, unique new world, while diverting from the game’s core formula just enough that it feels, at times, like playing a completely different game, which is both a good thing, and a bad thing.

Throughout his career, the legendary game developer Peter Molyneux has jumped from controversy to controversy - but is he really as bad as some people say? And what can his games, from Populous, to Fable, to Masters of Albion, tell us about the man who found a way to make himself God? Concord: How To Kill A Game In 2 Weeks

Why Do People Hate Ubisoft Games?

Though Ubisoft's open world games are rarely masterpieces, they are usually a lot of fun. Star Wars: Outlaws is just the latest example of a game made by Ubisoft that hasn't been given a fair shake by a lot of players. Though some might consider it formulaic and bloated, I think it's a fantastic Star Wars experience. Like and Subscribe to see more videos - discussing all the games you may or ma...
Starfield's New Vehicle Exceeded My Expectations

While I wasn't previously convinced that Starfield actually needed land vehicles, I'm willing to admit that I was very wrong. Starfield's Starborn Are Seriously Strange

While the motivations of the Starborn are, eventually, easy enough to understand within the context of Starfield’s universe, they’re also sort of baffling, and there is plenty left to uncover and discuss about the lives of the Starborn and how they work. The Eternal Failures of Immortals of Aveum

Was Starfield Once Multiplayer?

There’s an outlandish theory suggesting that Starfield was originally intended to be a multiplayer experience, much like Fallout 76. While I definitely don’t want or need the game to have online features, it’s interesting to consider what COULD have been and what MIGHT still be added. Rogue City: The Best Robocop Since Robocop

Robocop: Rogue City is not only a great Robocop game, it's arguably the best Robocop story we've seen since the original Verhoeven film - while also serving as a great introduction to the series for newcomers. I'm Worried About The Fable Reboot

While it’s far too early to tell how good or bad Playground Games’ Fable will be, the trailers we’ve seen so far have left me with some big concerns. Though I’d like to remain optimistic, I’m not yet convinced that Fable has captured the unique style and tone of the original Fable games. Hellblade II is an impressive technical and artistic achievement, though it's not without some serious flaws. While it's a huge visual upgrade from the first game, it also fails to iterate on its gameplay loop in a meaningful way, and leaves me wondering why this story needs to be a game at all. Is Fallout 4 The Best Fallout Game?
yes, shame they decimated half the city to sidestep the "burden" of crafting a hub comparable to the scale of new atlantis. whats more, the inevitable conclusion to this sequence only further hinders the sense of scale - but i digress so as not to spoil anything. at least there are plenty of bits to encounter outside the walls themselves
My theory is that in every universe, you arriving at the Lodge around the same time, is because it’s a fixed point that needs to happen.
My favorite part is when you try to play the game like an RPG triggering the hero John Starfield to suprise you by grabbing your watch and proclaiming "Your story is dumb, didnt you know, I am the only *star in this field!* " Then flicked his shades turned to look at an imaginary camera(thus breaking the fourth wall) and said " wake the F up! We got some stars to field i marked the first one on your watch!" Then drop kicked me through the unity causing me to loose all the value i built up in the game to vanish as my game to CTD and "sweet little lies" to begin playing as soon as the papyrus CTD warning popped up. Best game ever! 11 funko pops out of 10!
Finally someone with a brain
This guy is really cool, I like his vids
Overall this DLC isn't bad. I've been desperate for more detail and info on House Va'ruun so that's great. No big change in gameplay; it's more of the same but with a design aesthetic that feels more magic than scifi. I do wish Bethesda would have accompanied this DLC with a general game patch that updated things like the inventory and menu interfaces to something that wasn't so incredibly drab and barebones.
Bro, you were so spot on and I love it. Your review are so good because it's an honest review, giving critiques where they are needed but not venom filled ranting for no reason, and you also give praise where it's due. I think a lot of people were hoping for Shattered Space to be like Far Harbor, self included, but It's somewhere between Nuka World and Far Harbor for me. I would put it above Nuka World (as a reference point) but it's lacking the in-depth quality of Far Harbor. I really want them to make another DLC that continues off of this DLC to either expand it or have it affect the greater universe as a whole. Even if they make a completely new DLC all together, I want the DLC to not only have a self-contained story but also to be well fleshed out enough to also affect the wider universe as well. I'm definitely enjoying Va'runnkai and my affect on the world and story. At first, I felt more at home on Akila City, but now, it's definitely Va'ruunkai. I agree with you, 100%, that Bethesda peaked in story with the UC questline, by far. For me, it's a toss-up between Shattered Space, Ryujin, and Crimson Fleet, I love these 3 stories. The Freestar Collective one is still lacking as per the usual.
This DLC has made me sad man
While not as fleshed out as I would have hoped, I have enjoyed Shattered Space. But it could have been so much more. Very little extra in terns of loot, city seems very empty, the other planets only have one type of makeshift camp where the loot is exactly in the same place, and the woeful lack of Andraja is the story is a missed opportunity. And perhaps it was just my experience, but I had a fair few graphical glitches, not experienced in the main game.
Your Andreja cut aways had me laughing. Spot on review as always. They missed a ton of opportunity leaving her just acting like you're on some random moon. Especially with her companion line.
I really enjoyed Shattered Space. It looks stunning, the new outfits and spacesuits are awesome, the music is great, and in my opinion it has some of my favorite quests and writing in the game overall. However, reflecting on my time with it, I do feel it's overall an underwhelming experience as an expansion. I'm primarily talking in terms of new content such as such as new armors and weapons. While there are new armors and weapons in this expansion, I have found no uniques whatsoever. This is super disappointing for me, as I feel a key aspect to meaningful exploration is meaningful loot. Another big issue I have is the final act and ending. I'm not gonna spoil anything, but long story short? It feels rushed. Despite the main story being around the same length as most BGS expansions (Far Harbor's main story is around the same length, for example), it *feels* short. I think if 1-2 more hours were added to the main story, it would've satisfied me and probably other players who were disappointed with the length. Now this is just me theorizing, so my word is not gospel. I have a feeling this expansion is way under budget in terms of development. It feels like BGS had more planned but had to cut stuff, so they didn't over budget and miss deadlines. This could explain why aspects of it feel half-baked. Another thing: for quests and their choices and consequences, there is actually quite a bit going on - much more so than a lot of the side quests in the base game (Excluding the faction questlines, of course). In the main story, you can actually lose out on a possible crewmate if you make certain choices. Many of the side quests outside the main story also have some meaningful choices and consequences that I felt were more impactful than much of the main story. I'd say that's a positive with Shattered Space. But overall, I feel this expansion will satisfy most players who are already into Starfield. However, it's not gonna sway the opinion of those who don't care for it. It's definitely not gonna sway the opinion of those who dislike it.
How did you feel about the dialogue writing?
@@driver3899 I personally thought the dialogue was well-written. One thing I really liked about the characters is they all explored what it feels like coping with loss and destruction after a disaster. Some characters in particular were actually quite depressing to interact with. I feel the writing is at its weakest in the final act and ending. It really felt phoned in and like the designers just wanted the main quest to be done with. Not gonna spoil anything there, but that's how I feel.
@@dantefettman354 Yeah I get you, interesting. You didn't feel like the monologues were overly long / bloated?
@@driver3899 You know what? Yeah, looking back... the dialogue felt pretty bloated at times. I liked the writing, but I also feel some of the scenes needed tightening up. Scenes involving the noble house especially went on for too long. I have a writing background and have written scripts for various mod projects. I have a personal rule that 3-5 lines of dialogue per dialogue option is the sweet spot for RPGs. If you go beyond that number, then you risk dragging the dialogue experience with bad pacing. If there's more than 5 lines, then you need to tighten up the script.
@@dantefettman354 You were an excellent person to ask this question then haha that was lucky. Yeah from the bits I have seen, I wonder if this was like first pass dialogue and it was intended to be edited down a bunch to make it tighter I agree, 3-5 lines sounds about right, I often think of twitter and how the character lengths (the old and the new) were a good constraint on people to just really convey a lot more meaning with a lot less text I cant think of anything specifically but I feel like a lot of old games were good at this too. Actually Legend Of Zelda comes to mind, the text so was short and bordering on cryptic that is was really compelling.. you didn't have to wade through minutes of dialogue to become interested by an idea or topic. I guess its the whole less is more thing
I felt like I was playing an abridged version of Morrowind, elder scrolls 3. All the houses felt like dark elf houses, and the petty squabbling between them felt like a mirror image of that exact same game. I enjoyed myself playing shattered space, but couldn't help but feel all the similarities with Morrowind.
Yeah, the designers stated that they took a lot of inspiration from Morrowind for Shattered Space, and it shows. Hello, one of the quests is a direct call back to the wayshrine quests in Morrowind. The expansion at its core feels pretty old-school.
Ever since the expansion released, my game broke (Series X). I can't save anymore. Everytime I try to save, the game crashes - even if I'm using my older saves so the issue can't be save bloating. It almost seems like the Form ID bug is back or something else entirely. As of this moment I am unable to play the game, eventhough I'd like to. However, great video!
I think we can all agree that this DLC should be lower like $15-20. $30 is quite steep.
Hopefully one day they'll let us have a vehicle builder so we can make some sort of cool mobile base, and let us transition into another tile by reaching the edge of one tile (I'd be fine even if it will be another loading screen). Might make for a cool gameplay of exploring a planet's surface for science or for good old rare mineral or something.
Was looking forward to your take on the DLC. I haven't started the new content yet, but I started a new character for this DLC, and It's a little disappointing that it is seemingly so underwhelming. I hope we don't have to wait another year for another small DLC like this.
Imagine paying $30 dollars for a barely 10 hour quest line.
It's way more than that dude. There is a lot more here than is being reported on RUclips. I've been playing it for two days straight and have found so much that hasn't been mentioned in any videos.
@@byronf9021 Like what?
I played with mods my first actual run through mostly just better health and materials but because of the bug with the amulary I couldn't travel to unity so I ended up using console commands to travel ive got to unity 16 times and aside from constellation it's the same I find it kind of not worth it. I recently got the Genesis starwars overhaul and am just playing through as if it's a good starwars game lol
I really wanted to like both the game and the DLC but the experience feels so soulless.
There is a no point in choosing side at the end... it's just mass effect 3, but done way worse and less interesting.
People seem to like to dogpile on games now in a hate storm online when a good percent of them never even really tried a game and will post comments like "it's just crap" etc, without giving real criticisms of it. For me when I see a game I am interested in I both ignore reviews and comments on it until I tried the game and made up my own mind about it, than I will see what others have to say about it. This way I don't become biased from other peoples opinions online which is a very common thing now.
Great and honest review mate 👍
Couple things to add, the armillary does not get used up after you go through it as at the end credits it will say your partner choose to go through it later, so in the game it is clear more than one can go through it, how many is not clear though and they can go through at different times. If you side with the emissary least in my case he choose to stay behind which perhaps made him the pilgrim? I think it puts the player back at the same time in new universe because it was the start of your quest for artifacts and you have a choice to do it again or not. Its not clear when the others come through and they seem to have some collect themselves. The biggest question for me is who built the temples and the artifacts in the first place? This is what I really want to know. They are clearly built before the rise of humanity on earth.
Kinda feels llike expanded cut content to me.
I really love your videos man. Thoughtful and creative, very well done. keep it up.
I bet my last dollar if Starfield was on Playstation Shattered space would be a 10/10 it would be a 98 on metacritic it would game of the year i guarante it...all these fake hates are for clicks, you literally got this clown Luke Stephen gave the dlc a bad review because he didnt get a review code from Bethesda 😂 he literally said that man

Finally! Someone speaking real facts.... It's not because of the lack of loot or Andreja not being talkative enough , even tho she very much is talking about shattered space..... Those are good reasons, yes, but very small criticisms.... Which are just overblown out of proportion.... The real reason for its hate is it's Xbox exclusivity.... The moment this game comes to PlayStation ( if ever) , i bet all those mfs who trashed it, will be like, " oh it was always a good game "😂😂... I bet that will be the case
The only reviews you'll see on steam are from people who bought it. No idea what playstation has to do with that. But cope away
@@shotgunmcshotgun1142 oh please, like ponies won't go to the lengths of actually buying the game on steam , just to hate on it ..... They've done far more idiotic stuff than this.... @@amitansurkar1769 what's the number on your wristband? Just so I can phone the mental hospital you escaped from
Unfortunately there is a bug currently that makes companions speak way less than they should, that includes Andreja. I didnt have this in my playthrough and Barrett who I brought with me had something to say about almost every side quest and most main quests of the dlc. Felt very much like the same amount of comments from him as in the main game main quest
Great review mate!
the first new bethesda dlc/game that i forgot that existed and my friend on steam that have the game hate starfield so he will not play the dlc Edit: so its a fallout 4 dlc on starfield kinda deal.... oh well i think a Cyberpunk 2.0/No Man Sky the game is now what people wanted it to much to ask for the billionaire company
There were many great quests and Ideas in Starfield. But then Todd said "lets have 1000 worlds" for no reason whatsoever. I think the game might have been truly great if he'd just kept out of it.
You know, it may sound weird to some people, but if you roleplay and try to immerse yourself in some scenarios, the game can be more challenging and engaging. When I go to Akila I usually leave the spacesuit and the jetpack in the ship, this makes dealing with the wildlife and the shaw gang more thrilling. Also makes sense you dont need a spacesuit to go on a safari on a breathable planet. I used to mod skyrim to make things like preventing the character to jump or eat in the middle of battle, among other mechanics. Some self imposing challengings in the name of immersion can make your game more engaging. If there's a scenario where Im being hunted in a cave I wont use jetpacks.
(Haven't played SF yet)... I think that is quite a common way of replaying Bethesda games (or in my case, Fallout New Vegas). This is also why the "New Game Plus" approach does not appeal to me. If Im going to go through the same quests and dialogue, I want to do it with a totally new character concept which adds difficulty, not the same character with more godlike powers.. but I have heard SF has a lot of built in grind to make NG+ the expected way to play. (edit: "adds difficulty" is not quite the right phrase. Perhaps "requires a different play style" would be more accurate. On your first play through you may have high speach and a sniper rifle, so maybe play as a low int chem-addicted cannibal who just wants to be loved :) )
@peterd9698 Starfeild is definitely designed around going through NG+ at least once, since it does unlock some special dialogue, encounters and, without being specific for spoiler reasons, the chance to make an outcome more favorable. That said, the great thing about BGS games is you don't have to do it at all. Skyrim might have been set up with the idea you're Dovahkiin, yet at least half my playthroughs my character is not. The game is set up to allow both new characters and keeping your current one for multiple playthroughs.
@@AHungryHunky Im just playing skyrim at the moment.. First I rushed through the main quest and saved the world and got glowing eyes, and now Im stealing crockery for some thieves in Riften so they will take me seriously :) ..Thats another example of where playing through as a different character would probably make more sense. Where I think Starfield could really shine is if they deemphasised the main story and let you select your main story as you play with your choices. A big part of that is you choices have to cut you out of some content.
@@marconihimself yep, self-imposed handicaps really emphasise certain aspects of roleplaying. I've always struggled with the insane levels of athleticism & herculean strength of Bethesda's player characters. Thanks to Starfield's excellent modular difficulty settings however, i can now realistically roleplay as a 67 year old freighter captain with mild arthritis & a heart bypass. Set food & drink effects to positive & negative. Then never eat or drink! Now it takes almost a whole minute to load a gun, & i'm out of breath in seconds with a light jog.
@@peterd9698 i reccomend downloading the mod "Ascension", it makes progression more skill based, but combat is lethal at any level. It makes leveling up more fun because you feel more skilled, but can die at any point.
I really wonder what a Starfield 2 would look like?
We will truly never know
maybe in ~2034 you'll find out
Thank you for the spoiler free review. When might we look for the spoiler heavy deep dives? Just trying to see how much time I have!
Andreja Needed to be way more involved here. Making comments and dropping History/lore. Akin to dragging around a Mass Effect Character.
She does, is your affinity up with her to the point where she reveals she's house var'run?
She says a lot
@@BeKind1Love Does She? she mentioned only a couple one liner's so far. Otherwise she is as mute as a custom NPC from an unvoiced mod. If she has shit to say they need to make her say it! No matter what Affinity Level you have. Otherwise it leaves a bad impression that they gave her no backstory for her OWN HOME!
Im a lil disapointed they didnt use this opportunity to flesh out the base gane. I know in all their games that half of the DLCs are meh, or iffy, while the rest are great. But i think this shouldve been the really great ones
Also i think starfields strength is how much lore you can find, and how much theyre intertwined. And it all depends on how much youre willing to search for it. The random NPCs in the city doesnt really make the game feel alive, but all the kinda hidden lore that connects with eachother does.
There were never any testing space battles, I loved building a ship then didn’t really get to test it out much
In the 3 dataslates you can find on Anasko's desk in the Scaled Citadel, you can hear Jinan Varuun in the crucial moments of his storyline. I have strong beliefs on what it means for the lore and what The Great Serpent is, but I don't want to spoil anyone if they haven't listened to them yet. The massive disappointment for me is the lack of ship parts.
damn, i missed the slates. what are they called in-game if you can recall? maybe i can use commands to get ahold of them & listen/read.
@@-gavyn- "Serpent's Crusade" "An Admission" and... I don't remember the 3rd name. something like "Do not disclose"
The 3 criticisms i have with this DLC: 1. No new fully fledged followers 2. The existing ones like Andreja barely interact with the quests 3. ZERO new ship parts Everything else felt good to me, map size, density of content, exploration and even the size of the main questline.
There is a bug with Andreja apparently.
Valid criticisms, see you're also complimenting the game where it's due... Most critics just keep hating on the game overlooking the positives. And btw if your affinity isn't high enough with Andreja , she won't be interactive
2. Isn't accurate, it's definitely a glitch...I believe it's a glitch from the "Leadership" perk that needs to be fixed. Smh. Andreja actually interacts quite a lot throughout the main part of thee quests and even side quests. She's actually talking to the NPCs and they're responding to her in return. In vanilla Starfield, NPCs would usually chime in to a conversation, but the NPC would never really respond to your companion at all unless it was a dialogue choice with [Insert Companion's name here] available. For me, Andreja commented a lot on the star station, she commented a lot when we landed, and through out. As a matter of fact, if you haven't married her yet, becoming "Promised" actually changes her dialogue with you and she's not so pessimistic about your future together. Before, having the "Serpent's Embrace" trait wasn't enough, but once you become "Promised", she's overjoyed and your romantic dialogue with her changes. It's not a dramatic change, like nothing revolutionary, but it changes enough in my opinion. Your 1st and 3rd points are 100% valid and I'm actually very disappointed they didn't do either. If they weren't going to do 1., they should've overloaded Andreja's dialogue to make her similar to how they did with Nick with Far Harbor but better to the point that having a new companion would seem pointless. I feel like, especially with our "unique" situation, we should've had at least 2-3 new followers. The lack of ship parts thing is more forgivable since House Va'ruun doesn't their own star yard and uses the same parts as the rest of the Settled Systems, but I would've wanted some kind of unique color palette for the ships or paint jobs or something. I feel like, in classic Bethesda fashion, we are going to get a ship/robot centered DLC (prayerfully a free one) that focuses exclusively on ship parts and possibly customizing Vasco and/or building our own robots. Bethesda did a pretty good job here in my opinion but they need to do better and step up their game. I don't mind this being a self-contained story but they really need to have the next DLC(s) have an impact on the larger world as well in my opinion.
Vanguard questline is my personal favorite followed by the Crimson Fleet stuff. Kaiser should be a recruitable companion. He might very well be my favorite character.
The reviews on Steam are tragic, people complained about there being no Handmade content or large exploration focused areas, and then when they get that, they complain! I’m loving it so far, great story and world.
The hate trend will co tinue for quite a while. If they were rational i wouldnt mind. But 80% are very irrational. Very tribalistic
@@GoalOrientedLifting"if it's not the best game ever, then it's the worst game ever!" type of mindset. Yes, special guys. 😂
I've liked the game since inception. It's the most BGS game I know, more so than Fallout 4.
People go out of their way to hate this game because it isn't TES 6, that's all. Until TES 6 is out, people will keep complaining. In the end it all comes down to petty resentment over the fact that Todd isn't prioritizing TES 6 as they think he should, and anything that he releases in the meantime will be "bad", and the evidence for this is how the game was getting A LOT of hate all the way back to when Bethesda released the announcement trailer back in 2018.
I struggled with a lot of the DLC because I was bored. I loved the main game and play it nearly every other day but apart from Oracle station and the ending nothing was overall memorable. I wasn't really interested in fanatical zealot stuff in Fallout 4 with the children of the atom, so it being on larger extreme scale I really struggled.
My first playthrough I rationalized that the Unity makes of you what you already are. It makes those who are evil worse, and those who are good are given a purpose. My first playthrough my character was a law abiding, caring guy who fell in love with Sarah. He lost her, then went through the unity again to find her. I then stopped my game there. Im gonna start up a new play through though and have this one be ruthless.
I wonder if some of the other Starborn, the unnamed ones, are actually us.
It's clear that this game was not designed for specific types of players that prefer min-max gameplay or goals or achievements (e.g. INTJs). Expecting this game to be something else is only going to lead to disappointment regardless. Yes this game has flaws, Bethesda-style bugs especially, but I managed my expectation and enjoyed as much as I could, then move on. Players that unilaterally claim that this game is bad, should reconsider why they even bought this game in the first place and what they expected out of it. And aggregate review systems have their inherent flaws (ad populum). It is more reliable to look at the type of game and how it caters to certain types of people.
You can get every power in every universe. If Barrett survives, he has a quest that gives you the parallel self power, and if you don’t build the armillary right away after collecting all the artifacts, Vlad will be able to keep directing you to temples until you find all of them. Temples only become “findable” when you have their corresponding artifact in your inventory.
I think most of the confusing plot holes get patched up if you consider each new universe as a new timeline instead. It really does function more like a time loop rather than a multiverse when you really break it down. Every companion has the exact same backstory in every “universe”, the political state of the galaxy is identical at the start of each ng+, etc. the only time when it feels like a true multiverse is when you get the unique variant universes, like kid constellation, or the one where the lodge is full of different versions of yourself.
What I I’ve so much about that game is it’s somewhat of philosophical allegory for existence in real life. Aristotle’s truth vs necessary is always in effect. So much of what is true is an entirely subjective matter
I came to the conclusion that we are all the starborn. It's the only way it works they all seem to know where we are at any given time. Every time we star a new universe we can change our characters looks and traits. It stands to reason that the unity is outside of time but we always end up back at the beginning of our journey. Every time we create a multiversal constant based on our actions. We've just gone through the unity so many times we forgot our true selves. It even explains how the "other" starborn are just as clueless as you they are you. That's my take on it.
You really just explained exactly how I feel about the game in better words than I ever could. When you learn about the Colony Wars, The Serpents Crusade & the terramorph outbreak on Londinion, it all sounds so much more exciting than collecting artifacts. Also the Starborn being the main antagonist feels underwhelming as they never really feel like a threat to humanity. Starfield does a lot of things right but the main story is massively disappointing to me & I think the lack of intelligent alien life is a missed opportunity.
If Starborn Aiza can teach another version of himself how to build the Grav Drive, then I don't see why Starborns wouldn't be able to travel further back in time. After all, Dr. Victor Aiza died in the main story's universe, yet apparently he ascended in another? How did Starborn Aiza become Starborn in the first place? He'd need a grav drive to do that. Something he invented that costed decades of his life, resulting in his death. Are we also to assume Starborn Aiza immediatelly searched for the Pieces as soon as he got off the evacuation shuttle from Earth in his universe? He would have been super old by that point Theory: Starborn Aiza is from the present day post establishment of the Settled Systems. He went back in time through Unity and fast-tracked humanity's discovery of Grav Drives in that universe with a version of himself that was born much earlier, a.k.a only person he knew would agree with his borderline world-ending plan
The battle between Emissary vs Hunter seems more like an argument for Order vs Chaos. Or Control vs Freedom. And in the case of Unity, both can be seen as either good or evil
