      @@alicerosa6766 A couple of pointers on that: 1. the silver dust should be a thin layer. Too much dust won't fuse. It'll just slough off. 2. Start heating from below so that the dust sticks, and so that you're focusing on the mass rather than on the more vulnerable silver (the dust). Once the dust turns black it's almost ready to fuse, so you'll transition your torch to the top of the metal and heat in small circular motions until it fuses. It's really just a matter of watching the silver colors and torch control. Does that make sense?

      Unfortunately it's a one-and-done. It's an abrasive component (not steel shot) that is mixed with water and soap.

    Love this. Thank you and Rio Grande for this channel. How large are the stones? I live in a “stone free” area (Florida), but i can look when I travel. Interesting about the tumbling. How do you know when they are “done”? Is it personal preference or is there a tell?

      @@kimwarneke4272 the rocks are smaller than a dime. And the tumbling is literally one week per grit (without turning off the tumbler except between grits).

    Great Video, Nicole. I have recently been working with stones I beachcombed in Devon, so this is timely. I was having to do a lot of refinishing because of the back of the stones popping off so this is really helpful. Will have to get a diamond core bit as well as the usual diamond bits! Still think your workshop was the best - learnt so much!

    I’m thrilled every time you post something. I think you are a metalworking genius. And your book is absolutely incredible, I can’t recommend it enough. What do you do if both sides aren’t nice after you drill? Do you just discard that particular stone? Looking forward to your next video!

    Do you have to use the grout? Can u just leave them with only the thinset? Would this be suitable outside on a cinder lock wall?

      Grout is definitely needed if the mosaic is being installed outside. The grout would also require a sealant.

      It’s less important for them to be clean than for them to be annealed which softens the metal and ensures that it doesn’t rack while forming.

I love carving wax and I’ve been slowly teaching myself for several years and now I’m finally taking a class and my goodness I don’t know anything about anything else like soldering or hammering etc. your natural inspired style is incredible.     Hi Nicole, Thank you for this excellent video. I may have missed it, but what should I turn my propane tank to? I have it at a 5. Using a 7 torch tip and was using oxygen at a 4, so I'll turn it up. Is 5 ok for the oxygen? Thank you.

      The pressure on both tanks should match the number on your torch tip. So, if you're using a #7 tip, both tank regulators should read 7.

      I'm right handed. I didn't know until I'd already taught myself how to use my torch that I'm "supposed to" hold my torch in my non-dominant hand. 🤷‍♀ Now, I teach my students to use whichever hand feels most comfortable.

    Hi Nicole, thanks for an excellent video. I wish I had it when I bought my smith torch a couple of years ago. I have difficulties when I am lighting the torch. I have an oxygen concentrator. Just after I start the propane and light the flame, when I slowly introduce the O2, the flame comes off. This can happen several times and needs re-lighting. I wonder if this is because perhaps the tips are dirty? Or the setting on the O2 concentrator is not the right one? I would be grateful for advice. Many thanks , Smaranda

      @@ringgoldnicit does it for all sizes, the large ones I manage to control quicker and stabilise the flame after only 3-4 attempts. For a 5 and below I could be there ages trying to light it.

      @@Noirsmaranda I have found that, with oxygen concentrators, it's mostly the #7 tip that works effectively, especially when heating a large mass. Also, some of my students who use concentrators tell me that they leave the machine running for 5-10 minutes to give it time to stabilize before using.
