My falconry mistakes episode 1 - Let's start in 2011 with owl problems
Просмотров 7515 часов назад
For your enjoyment and education - we present to you the first episode of falconry mistakes that Ryan made during the early beginnings of Owl Adventures. He explains that in 2011, he made the mistake of buying an owl that just wasn't tame enough and another owl without the correct paperwork. He also talks about how one of these owls escaped and the adventure Ryan has to retrieve the bird.

Ryan's roundup Ep 2 - Managing a Ural owls behaviour, daft staff members, training eagles and more
Просмотров 27621 час назад
It's 6.30am on a Saturday morning mid November - and it's snowing. So a good opportunity for Ryan to sit down (this time with Scout the Ural owl) and offer his descriptions and opinions for a second instalment of 'Ryan's round-up'. He begins by explaining what aviary defensive behaviour is and how Scout has displayed that recently. Also...every silly things that a past team member did, training...
Why I have decided to quit pest control falconry!
Просмотров 1 тыс.14 дней назад
Running any business is a challenge. In falconry, there are many methods to earning money with birds of prey and hawking pest control is one of them. Here, Ryan explains what it's like to carry out this work and how much it pays - and the three reasons why he has decided to pack it in...for now at least.
Ryan's Round up 1 - feeding on the glove, haters, training owls, managing stress, being a falconer
Просмотров 41021 день назад
Something a bit different - just Ryan sat with one of his owls discussing matters that has arisen over the last few weeks. In this video Ryan responds to some comments on videos, clears up some misunderstandings, talks about how feeding on the glove can help with training an owl and how some people (haters) are just a bit stupid.
Flying an Eagle owl free with no tracker!

What is Ryan doing? Flying a bird of prey free with no telemetry? That's so against the rules of best practice falconry. But wait, perhaps there is a good reason why.

Owl Diary 67 Why did I take a barn owl to Ireland?
Просмотров 1202 месяца назад
The owl diary is back and this time we have gone European - Ryan has travelled to the republic of Ireland, to the north West near Sligo to provide a particular event with a barn owl flying. What could that possibly be? (If you a regular viewer you may have already guessed it). So Owl Adventures is now officially international - I suppose. What complication will Ryan face when attempting to take...
Revealing my new Eagle enclosure and how much did it cost me?

It's big - it's strong, it's bold - no, nor Ryan's ego but his new Eagle aviary. Take a tour of the grand design, it's features, perches and flooring. Also, watch a feeding session to both Storm and Athena, the female Steppes Eagles and Ryan will reveal how much it cost to have the aviary built.

My barn owl escaped three times. Couldn't find him. Each time he hopped in through the open bedroom window when I was getting ready for bed. This was a few years ago, beginners stupidity. Clever owl came back twittering happily. He died at 8 years old. Have had a few since then although never any escapees or fly aways. You live and learn.

Excited to see her out and about in the Dales! Hi Julie, as few do a lot of flying shows at events where people have dogs, we do what we can to keep our birds used to them. As you rightly mentioned, there is a risk of the occasional dog running unto a hawk (or other bird of prey) on the ground with aggression, so we try our best to avoid that but the hawk's vision is very good and will see if a dog comes near and fly away from it.

I only have experience with hunting hawks. They can become food aggressive when feeding continually or too much on the fist. Obviously, we tidbit them, but their instinct seems to be quite different than an imprinted bird, especially one that is used for exhibition only. We have ways to attend to this when it does crop up. No pun intended. A falconer learns to identify the tendency and deal with it sooner than later. i.e. sticky foot and other behaviors. I fly Harris' Hawks, and very social and compliant bird, and even they can get food aggressive. Nothing to worry about, we know how to handle this. Additionally, hunting and successful slips and binds, gets them off this. After all they are hunters. It is important to hunt them as often as possible, and this is our commitment and responsibility to the bird and our tradition.

I see! Well you are doing something much more fun for a lot more pay! I can’t disagree with that. Educating others about these hawks is the most exciting part of Falconry! These hawks get plenty of flights with that and it gives them more fitness training.
