Literally Me, Reacting to an Episode of Buffy 🤦‍♂️

I uploaded this to Patreon a while back. As my reaction to the season finale (to be uploaded tomorrow) was so awful, I thought I'd upload it on here, in an attempt to prepare you for the absolute s t show you're about to witness tomorrow. 🤦‍♂️ This is just a reminder that I'm about the most clueless Buffy reactor you're ever likely to find. 😂 #buffythevampireslayerreaction #buffythevampireslayer

    I must have watched a dozen reactions to this episode in the last month… RUclips keeps recommending them to me. I need to see if anyone reacted to Brigadoom; the other contender for my favourite musical episode of a long-running TV show.

    If no one mentioned it yet (I didn't read all comments yet)... I read somewhere (and I think I confirmed it's true) that that actor HAS a twin brother and they actually used him at least in the scenes where both Xanders were there! :D

      SPOILER: They've all died! Wait, have I just spoiled that for myself? That must mean that it's The First! And now Buffy will probably have to fight it, and Anya will die, and Spike will sacrifice himself to save the day and... I'll stop there - it's pointless, my predictions never end up coming true. 😁

    I'm a bit baffled on your thought process of Spike reverting back to William because of his soul. Think about Angel - he wasn't Liam just because his soul was restored.

    • @jaypeakay5864
      @jaypeakay5864 2 дня назад

      I’ll try to explain what I’ve been thinking, LMK if I’m way off, lol. I don’t believe in a ‘soul’, but let’s say it exists, as it does in the show. Isn’t the whole idea of a soul that it’s supposed to be individual? As I said, I don’t believe in them, so I’ve made not attempt to understand what a soul is supposed to be, but maybe they’re meant to be ‘fresh’‘ individual souls? If not, wouldn’t Spike’s “new” soul, be that of William? I actually did think that Angel (with a soul) was now Liam again, but Liam with the memories of Angelus, which, in terms of time, vastly outweigh the memories of Liam. As memories shape who we are, there’s barely a trace of Liam left - not only were those memories older, but they were much more fleeting than those of Angelus. Given what Angelus did, and how strong his lust for blood and evil was, they were probably less vivid too. So yeah, Liam, but a different version of him. I’ve been uncertain of the whole ‘soul return’ thing since the beginning, so maybe I have all of that wrong. But then my question is, why did Buffy call Spike ‘William’ later in the season and seemingly make a deliberate effort to do so? And why would a newly restored soul care so much about William and his previous human life? He’s been kind of obsessed with it the whole season. I’m probably wrong, but I just thought I’d explain my logic.

    Nice reaction to a season that has the most diverse reactions from fans. My group of Buffy Watchers since the beginning have agreed that this year is similar to the sewer breakup scene with Buffy and Angel in The Prom. The show is Angel and knows the relationship has to end for practical reasons. He doesn’t like it but understands their reality. Buffy wants to keep being with Angel but knows deep down it has to end. The audience is like Buffy. We know it has to end but we don’t want it to happen. It is with this backdrop that the final 22 episodes take place. We prefer to group the year together has the final 150 pages of a great 800 page novel. Be patient…. After all we have to have quality closure for people and stories that the audience has become emotionally involved and bonded. No break up is completely satisfying but if done properly, we can be like Willow and Oz meeting in Istanbul after many years.

    I only discovered your reactions to this series recently and just blasted through them and had the best time with you laughing and crying (and me matching every one). I have seen every season of this show about five or six times, but the premiere and finale are just about the perfect bookends to this warm hug of a show. The only other show that even compares is The Good Place. That show is four seasons of pure perfection and one of the best TV finales ever. You will love it. Thank you so much for completing this journey.

    Yeah, hard to believe you are already on season 7! ❤ I have an irregular heat best at times so I’m very familiar with abnormal heart rates. I don’t think your heart rate is abnormal considering what you are doing. Being on camera in front of your audience is stressful no matter how normal it might seem to you at this point. You are thinking hard, putting energy into your presentation while talking constantly in your intro. I think 90 to 120 would be pretty normal under those circumstances. (By the way, the inset of the episode scenes covered your heart rate during the video, but I’m sure you noticed that while editing)

    • @jaypeakay5864

      Right?! E1 seems so long ago now, but I still can't quite believe we're here. Haha, thanks. That's reassured me. I didn't mention it at the time, but I'd just eaten two bowls of chocolate ice cream, so there's that. 😂 TBF, my resting HR isn't great. Whatever, I'm well into my 40s now; I'm not supposed to be in the low 50s anymore. 😁 I got the idea from another reactor and their HR was in the mid 60s, but then they're almost 20 years younger than me. Sorry to hear about your irregular heartbeat, hopefully it's not too serious. 🤞

  • @luckyrobinshomestead
    @luckyrobinshomestead 5 дней назад

    You really have to listen to that last speech a couple of times. From the words spoken to the people shown, there is so much foreshadowing as well as information revealed if you pay attention. Also, you should go get a physical before you start an exercise regimen. Your resting heart rate is above 100 and that is called tachycardia. And you are going up to 118 when you are just sitting there talking. It could be as simple as high blood pressure or hyperthyroidism, but it could be heart disease. Get yourself checked out. Covid caused heart damage for me and I was able to heal that damage because we caught it early due to me monitoring my pulse on my fitbit. Things can be improved and sometimes reversed. And if it is nothing, even better.

    I really like the "back to the old times" theme here. Even more after such a dark season like season 6, it needed some light. Sunnydale high back. Dawn with the two students "representing" the og trio: Buffy, Willow and Xander. The end with the big bads fan service. And very cool the fact the actors were in England for the Willow and Giles scene.

    Heart rate monitor-great idea, especially for season 7, based on my experience of watching 7 as I found it very different to 5 and 6. Well, every season is different, but some are more different than others. Obvious screnn layout refinement: it would be good to see heart rate and show at the same time.

    • @jaypeakay5864
      @jaypeakay5864 2 дня назад

      I agree. S7 is quite different; in a good way, IMO. Haha. I totally didn't think that layout through. It was only when I did the edit that I realised I'd put it in the wrong place. 🤦‍♂I thought about cutting it out and inserting it elsewhere but it was too much work, lol.

    I think Lessons was an excellent opener with the opening scene in Istanbul with the girl being chased by the shrouded men a great little 'taster' of what is to come in the Season. We the see Buffy training Dawn, who says 'I'm now taller than you' we can see how Dawn has grown. Then as we are coming full circle Principal Wood cuts the ribbon to open Sunnydale High. Funny when Buffy says 'do I have mum hair' when Wood thinks she is Dawn's mother. We get our first scene of Supernatural happenings with Buffy in the bathroom. Very funny when Dawn says she was into 'Britney Spears early work, before she sold out'. The we have Buffy as the 'embarrassing mum' ruining Dawns intro to the class. The pencil scene is great when the student asks for it Dawn them seemingly stabs her in the eye with it, a throwback to Nightmares episode in S1. As Buffy is fighting the manifest spirits, we suddenly see a very strange looking Spike behind the door. Buffy sees his injuries, we know something has changed. Xander eventually breaks The Talisman, again funny scene when the student says 'you are the coolest mum ever'. When Principal Wood offers Buffy the job of Counsellor, of course she accepts, now call me cynical but surely you would have to have training, qualifications, credentials and experience to get such a post, but hey this is Sunnydale High after all. One of the greatest scenes in the whole Buffyverse at the end with Spike being tormented by Warren, Glory, Adam, The Mayor, Drusilla, and The Master, what have they all got in common, and of course finally Buffy too. It is brilliant writing. Great reaction again can see that you are enthralled and intrigued by this great opener for S7.

    Best finale ever! We were still in the middle of the pandemic when it aired and I was sitting in my bedroom watching this finale, bawling my eyes out seeing everyone at that backyard BBQ. At the time, it gave me so much hope for the future and being able to get back to large gatherings with loved ones. Garrett's voice over and the music as we see the montage of where all of the main characters end up...*chef's kiss* I think a lot of shows try to be edgy or different, but they could really benefit from studying this finale and all the ways in which the Superstore writers got it right. There's nothing wrong with a happy ending (in many ways it was bittersweet what with the store closing down), with seeing everything work out in the end and getting sentimental. They totally nailed it. It's definitely regarded as one of the best series finales of all-time.

    Glad you enjoyed episode 6x22! I sometimes wonder what happened regarding Anthony Stewart Head. Did he make plans to work for a different company, for example, the UK TV industry, after the end of season 5? Obviously Giles leaving and coming back is a huge feature of this season.

      A patron told me that he just wanted to go back to England to spend more time with his family. I guess Buffy was a big time commitment, and it was kind of relentless in terms of how quickly they put out seasons.

    Great rumination session. Your comments about Spike reverting to his William personality and then having a real romance with Buffy is a lovely idea. This wasn’t my favorite finale either. It’s probably toward the bottom of my rankings. Great season though overall. First time I watched this I was also surprised when Spike got his soul.

      I really liked the season too. I hope I got that across because it was only really this finale and the Willow thing that I wasn't too keen on. The first 3 or 4 episodes were great and there were some fantastic standalone episode too. Definitely not my least favourite season. Season 7 has been great too! Thanks for telling me that, I totally didn't see that coming, like, at all. And I'm fairly sure it was filmed to be that way.

      @@jaypeakay5864 I think we all knew you really liked Season 6. The finale is a bit of a let down in some ways, but some of the best episodes in the entire run of Buffy are in this season.

    Spike went through the trials because he wanted to be better for Buffy. He willingly won his soul back. He did it for Buffy.

      I get that now. It was difficult to get it when they made it look like he didn't know anything about it. As far as I'm aware, it was only during the scene with Buffy in the church (during the final season), that it was explicitly said that he'd deliberately deliberately set out to do that. Although, a patron did tell me before I got to that scene.

    I tend to agree with you. The writers attempted to cover two major arcs this seasons: Buffy’s post-death depression and Willow’s “addiction”/recovery/despair and IMO the results are…mixed. Not “mixed” in the sense of the whole thing being meh, but it the sense that (for me) some stuff worked well and some stuff reeeeally didn’t. I give the writers full marks for having Buffy’s depression run the whole season rather than the far-more-standard-for-the-time 1-2 episodes. It can be a bit of tiring to watch, but one could argue that’s the point; that’s certainly what she feels. On the flip side, the final fight with the plant people and emergence from the pit into the daylight felt as though it had been bolted on at the last minute. “We know Willow’s going to be doing her things, and Buffy’s already fought her so we need her out of the way” or some such. To re-use a phrase from my comment on your reaction the previous episode, it felt ham-fisted. Regarding Willow, I think I get what the writers were going for: wanting to destroy the world (or thinking/convincing yourself you do) as a metaphor for being unable to handle the place you’ve taken your definitely works for me on paper. The execution didn’t quite work for me and I’m not sure why; possibly because Buffy and Dawn vs the Plant People broke the rhythm of the climax and possibly because the whole satanic temple thing came out of /nowhere/. Big points for trying it; if you don’t go for it big you’ll never win big. But it also means that if you come this -><- close but miss, it’s going to feel like a miss. For a counterpoint, and I f you haven’t seen it, Sarah Z made a 90-minute essay in which she sings the praises of season 6: ruclips.net/video/UMC45v0ULCY/видео.html

    S6 is fantastic. It’s funny how you struggle to accept Dark Willow and her motives 😂 Willow was literally a struggling addict and her lover was murdered so it made sense for her to have a dramatic downfall (which was foreshadowed and made in typical Buffy-apocalyptic fashion) which caused her to be “destructive” towards herself and the rest of the world dealing with grief. Also, it’s important to note the amazing juxtaposition of Buffy crawling out of the grave from the beginning of the season vs the finale. It reflects the important theme of this season which is life. Existing vs living. (Crawling out of her grave by herself and depressed, versus crawling out with her sister and newfound purpose and meaning of life)

      FWIW, it wasn't surprising to me that she had a downfall, what was surprising was that she immediately turned to destroying the entire world and everyone in it. I get that she 'felt the suffering', but that doesn't mean she needs to take that decision for everyone all by herself, because, IMO, that would make her someone I don't believe she is. Hope that makes some sense. Haha.

    You've got to think a little deeper. There is so much below the surface. Each episode serves to move each character along a specific journey towards an eventual designation. Each moment has meaning in that context, the bigger picture. Trust the process. ;) 💕

      I find it hard to do that when reacting. I can't pause the show to speak, and I have to/want to speak a lot to make this 'fair use.' I know some reactors will sometimes go 5 or even 10 minutes without saying a word, but I'm choosing not to do that, since I'm using content that I don't own.

    This is not my favourite finale either. Sure, it's a nice idea that Xander's inconditional love can save the day, but it feels like they built the idea of Willow being unstoppable, and then, a hug and we're OK. But you're right, we see once again that Xander, no powers or anything, can save the day because he's brave, and because he's true. He makes A LOT of mistakes, but he comes around. That's a good friend to have around. Buffy finally feeling like she has reasons to live is also nice, although she was to supposed to have realized that already. I think Spike fans like to believe that he wanted his soul back, but I think he wanted to be fully evil. Nothing in his words indicates he wanted to be good, "that bitch" is not the most loving way to refer to someone XD However, his wording allows for the entity in the cave to interpret it literally, so "what Buffy deserves" is not what Spike was thinking of. Anyway, on to season 7...

    • @jaypeakay5864
      @jaypeakay5864 12 дней назад

      Yeah, I feel like just about everything Spike said was intended to trick us into believing he wanted the chip out. I was surprised to hear that people knew it was the soul he wanted. As it happened, he even seemed surprised himself, and it ended with that as if it were a big reveal (as it was to me), and also kind of a cliff hanger in terms of what was going to happen thereafter.

      Well it's not a Spike fan thing, Season 7 confirms like 10 different times that he fought for his soul deliberately.
