    think youre idea of bending those one inch strips should work , be nicest if you could tig weld those edges together as the metal is kinda thin mig welding tends to burn through or leave big blobs in the inside corners (its a bit of all or nothing using mig ) making it harder to grind and fit over the other sheetmetal underneath having the damage on that side AND having to move the rear of the door on that side makes me suspect that the door got pushed forward during the hit on the rearcorner , the should be simetrical and you might need to tweak the dooropening to fit the bodywork instead ..... depending on how well the door fit in the hole on that side offcourse (seems to fit fine though i think the gaps are a little big ..... not sure if its a fj40 thing or not ) we usually let the welds cool down on their own , wat we do is weld a spot move over to another spot a few inches away and weld that etc , by the time where back near the first spot its cooled enough to not warp by adding even more heat allso dont go hamfisted with the grinder as that puts a lot of heat intoo the metal too , again hop over to other bits if you convert the cad (cartboard aided design ) to cad (computer aided desighn ) you might be able to sell those templates online , the buyers that have the downloaded plans basicly have to go to a xerox shop and have them printed on thick paper (zerox printer can print of a ......think it was a pdf file) wat you could try to get the corner a little tighter around the fram is to lay a ratchetstrap over it a tighten the strap it should pull on the whole bend evenly just dont go too far and make it concave all ideas mentioned , i think youre doing a good job on it a while back i seen a way to make text embossed intoo sheetmetal using a hydraulic shoppress a sheetmetal letter mounted to a block of wood pressing the metal intoo a piece of high density rubber cannot find the article in hot rod magazine but you might want to try it to get the toyota logo in the hatch

    • @dadstoygarage1878
      @dadstoygarage1878 3 месяца назад

      I’ve wanted to try my hand at tig but I don’t have one yet. I learned the mig stuff from my dad so I’m going with what I know. Regarding the door fitment I agree it could be from the accident damage. That side has the damage in the front and back corners. To top that off the body mounts were rusted gone so it was sagging too. That whole driver door jamb was so out of whack it took me a long time to figure out the potential issues. I studied gaps on other 40 series and some are tighter and some wide like mine. I think there was a large production tolerances. It’s crossed my mind selling some of the stuff. I can get a new tub for $20k cad but I’m aiming to build mine for $2000 in materials. Thanks again for the ideas and watching the videos! Have a great day.

    Very cool techniques! I clicked on your video thumb to say how you did the bends and the flanges, I thought you would cut a piece of MDF as a 'mold' and then hammer the entire flange, straights and curves, but you did it in an interesting way. I am here thinking, the wood route would be the easiest, but you did it in a cool way, but had to weld and grind a lot, but i can see where this could come in handy if you don't want to buy wood.

    even though the screws work look intoo cleco;s ruclips.net/video/pHrlo5czEOk/видео.html as for using compressed air to cool off the metal : dont do it that way or use a wet rag , causing a weld to cool fast can locally schrink the metal causing oildrum type buckling (popping inward outward dents ) , its better to not get it too hot to begin with and just let it cool naturally or hit it with a hammer and dolly to stretch it back out a little , since there mostly flat panels it should be too obvious buttrying the same thing on rounder car bodywork will cause you a lot of bodywork to get everything straight again

    btw a way i seen they used to match doorgaps was by welding on acethylene weldingrod to the edge using the mig welder and grind it to the right gap than flatten it to the rest of the sheetmetal btw theres nothing wrong about taking a piece of sandpaper on a block to flatten the last bit of weld , most of the time it gives a better result though it takes more work

    • @dadstoygarage1878

      I've seen guys use sand paper on an orbital to finish out the metal working process. But Ive not seen any one use a block to finish metal. I'll be using my sanding blocks to do the body work portion of it though. I to have seen guys do door gap adjustment with the welding rod. I've been studying other 40 series builds and am thinking my gaps are pretty close to an original fj40. Sounds like you have built a couple cars. What car projects do you have on the go? This is my 4th classic vehicle build and I really enjoy the process.
