    No way! I designed and made a jumper for a toddler took about 7 days to complete. I struggled to get £36.00 …… Customer thought I was ripping them off. It would have been expensive wool, but I got it cheap ….. but that’s not point really.

    This is really helpful! Maybe the cost would be lower if it was possible to buy supplies at lower rate, as a business owner, but the cost of labor is still a lot for people! If someone doesn't understand the cost, it might be helpful to ask them how many hours of their labour would they do for free or lesser pay.

    Love your cable sweater and the cardigan you are working on. You mentioned the yarn; Falkland handspun? what is the fiber? I have learned that lots of acrylic yarn looks like wool or cotton, but it pillls a lot! Love those socks too! I like to crochet too!

    Loved it! I cannot count the times I have been asked to sew, knit or mend something and the person is completely clueless about the length of time or the cost of materials to produce the article (usually clothing in my case). Next they say, "You should go into business you will be rich". Really, really??? Did they even think before they spoke? I make about $30 per hour plus benefits and I am going to school to become and Attorney who will be making more than that. Please tell me why, "you" think I would be wealthy making $25 or less without ANY benefits at all, knitting or sewing something for "you". SMH

    Hiya :) This has been really interesting to think about. Personally I also find it so interesting in the context of "what is my skill worth" and how am I spending my time. I feel like with knitting, crochet etc. non-crafters tend to find it sort of cutesy and it diminishes the SKILL and ART and everything that we know after having practised this craft for 5, 10, maybe more years. Like yes, I can probably knit someone a pair of socks in a week or two, but that's also because I have spent 9 years perfecting my sock-knitting skills. Ultimately for me, this thought exercise has helped me rethink my hobby and what it's worth to me as well, no matter how people tend to somehow diminish it ("you know you could just BUY a sweater and it'd be cheaper", "oh I don't have time to knit in my busy life" etc.)

    • @knittingwithknottygnome
      @knittingwithknottygnome Год назад

      absolutely--just because our society has decided to discount the value of our skills doesn't mean it is worth nothing.

      This is the pattern that I teach my beginners. Quilters do much more work and charge less than this. Her skil level may improve and she can make this kind of money. Piecing, edging, and intricate stitches bring in more money.

    • @knittingwithknottygnome
      @knittingwithknottygnome Год назад

      true but the cost of crochet tools is so low and needs to be replaced maybe once in my life? it would be negligible. if i were talking about a higher priced tool like my sewing machine, spinning wheel, or loom, i would include that in the price. thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    People think they are doing you a favour when they ask you to hand make something for them. It can feel pretty insulting but they honestly have no idea of the time it takes to make things or the time it took for you to become skilled. And they are easily offended if they feel like you are saying that they can't afford the item. I used to have a bespoke cake business and customers are the worst lol.

    The wall and your sweater are gorgeous. I haven't listened to the podcast you mentioned but I'm not sure about the moral conundrum. My nephew has Aspergers and has never cyber stalked anyone. People on the mild end of the autism spectrum can learn and understand social cues for "appropriate" human interaction. Casually mentioning that this criminal has Apergers in this way isn't supportive and understanding of autism, it's damaging.

    Re: dying yarn I found out that I was allergic to indigo midway through dying my hair so I feel your pain, as an alternative option you can try packages of kool aid, someone did a bunch of test swatches on their blog once but wool takes the dye in the drink pretty readily, if you like one of the colors available that might be an option. Dropped into a hot microwaved dish of yarn + water I was able to get a cloudy gradient with red.

    Your spinning is beautiful! I've been struggling with my spinning mojo this year too, and I'd really like to get back to spinning regularly. I'd love to do a sweater spin too! Maybe in 2023. When you did your sweater spin, did you spin all the singles first, and then ply them? Or did you do some singles, ply them, then do more singles, ply them, etc?

    • @knittingwithknottygnome
      @knittingwithknottygnome Год назад

      for the undyed falkland i spun all of the singles first and then plied. since i was doing a 3ply i divided the bobbins into three categories and plied oldest with newest and middlest (not a word, but hopefully you get the gist) and so on with the skeins getting closer in age to hopefully distribute any irregularities that got introduced over time.

    Hooked by Robin here on RUclips is a great channel that has lots of crochet blanket inspiration. I'm knitting sock 2 of a pair of self drafted socks and contemplating frogging a cabled sweater that I never quite finished. I have the front and back and both sleeves are knit to the elbow but it's a little small now and I can't find the cable pattern anywhere. I have so many hours invested in it that it's painful to actually start taking it apart even though it's been in my ufo pile for a couple years. 😜
