    This is really helpful! Maybe the cost would be lower if it was possible to buy supplies at lower rate, as a business owner, but the cost of labor is still a lot for people! If someone doesn't understand the cost, it might be helpful to ask them how many hours of their labour would they do for free or lesser pay.

    People think they are doing you a favour when they ask you to hand make something for them. It can feel pretty insulting but they honestly have no idea of the time it takes to make things or the time it took for you to become skilled. And they are easily offended if they feel like you are saying that they can't afford the item. I used to have a bespoke cake business and customers are the worst lol.

      ooh, i feel for you. that must have been hard. i'm happy that i don't need to sell my work and i can just enjoy it. it was a fun thought experiment though.

      What as whiner. This pattern is not difficult. This is a crazy cost and the fact that you are slow to make it defined your lack of skill. The yarn price was your choice. There was no complicated parts to this pattern.

      @@carolmanning1333 why don't you go be rude to someone's face instead of in the comment section like a pathetic coward? It costs you nothing to have good manners and keep your negativity to yourself. Have a nice day.

    Hiya :) This has been really interesting to think about.
    Personally I also find it so interesting in the context of "what is my skill worth" and how am I spending my time. I feel like with knitting, crochet etc. non-crafters tend to find it sort of cutesy and it diminishes the SKILL and ART and everything that we know after having practised this craft for 5, 10, maybe more years.
    Like yes, I can probably knit someone a pair of socks in a week or two, but that's also because I have spent 9 years perfecting my sock-knitting skills.
    Ultimately for me, this thought exercise has helped me rethink my hobby and what it's worth to me as well, no matter how people tend to somehow diminish it ("you know you could just BUY a sweater and it'd be cheaper", "oh I don't have time to knit in my busy life" etc.)

      absolutely--just because our society has decided to discount the value of our skills doesn't mean it is worth nothing.

      This is the pattern that I teach my beginners. Quilters do much more work and charge less than this. Her skil level may improve and she can make this kind of money. Piecing, edging, and intricate stitches bring in more money.

    No way! I designed and made a jumper for a toddler took about 7 days to complete. I struggled to get £36.00 ……
    Customer thought I was ripping them off. It would have been expensive wool, but I got it cheap ….. but that’s not point really.

    I think you should consider adding on a percentage of the cost of your tools - things wear out and need replacing!

    • @knittingwithknottygnome
      @knittingwithknottygnome  Год назад +3

      true but the cost of crochet tools is so low and needs to be replaced maybe once in my life? it would be negligible. if i were talking about a higher priced tool like my sewing machine, spinning wheel, or loom, i would include that in the price. thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    Loved it! I cannot count the times I have been asked to sew, knit or mend something and the person is completely clueless about the length of time or the cost of materials to produce the article (usually clothing in my case). Next they say, "You should go into business you will be rich". Really, really??? Did they even think before they spoke? I make about $30 per hour plus benefits and I am going to school to become and Attorney who will be making more than that. Please tell me why, "you" think I would be wealthy making $25 or less without ANY benefits at all, knitting or sewing something for "you". SMH

      I literally started my cake biz because of all the people who said I should. Guess how many of them actually wanted to pay full price for my cakes? Yeah. Good luck in school!

      i'm pretty sure average folks have no idea how long it takes to make something by hand. they think we can just wave a wand and churn out garments like a machine.
