      @@naturalwhetstones I figured out that I just need a 400 and 1200 tsuboman atoma and to use the 400 for flattening and 1200 for the fine stones and natural stones for slurry I can even use the 1200 on a 1000 soaking stone.. I think this is the best way to do it because the 140 is just way to aggressive. The 400 with the handle is perfect for post lacquer too with the mountain cashew

    some people are cutting a line down the middle of their nagaras for suction is that safe im trying find out but nobody says anything.. they use a hacksaw for a very small groove (1 sixteenth inch) and use the edges of diamond atoma stone to round it off and smoothen it down the middle of the nagara. They are doing it with their synthetic nagaras also and using the same synthetic grit nagara on the synthetic water stones for slur (tomo nagara) supposedly the suction makes a better slur. Is this true? Have you tried it? Can anyone confirm this theory? Tomo's are by far the best way to medicate and dress any stone even synthetic stones if you can. It is how they did it even back in the samurai days on stones.. Tomo's (pieces from the same natural stone or even the same stone grit on synthetic water stones) creates the slur how its supposed to perform. Supposedly the samurai's in theory thought tomo's were the way also. I love your VOD's bro keep it up man they are very good

    Im a huge fan dude keep up the good work you are very very informative!!! I have a few questions for you if you don't mind? I bought an ohira tomae Jnat from a friend that works at a cutlery out here in LA called Yoshihiro. He Had a rare red one that has red streaks on the top, bottom and sides he said it was the rarest one he had. I trust him ive done a lot of business with him. Im new to naturals as you can tell. I have 2 atoma tsuboman's with handles the 140 and 400. First question is which of the 2 would you use for flattening and leveling this stone? Second question is I bought some watco laquer they have 3 brands in spray a satin and 2 other ones for sale. I bought the satin one is that safe to spray on this stone in 3 coats? Last question is after I seal up this stone is it safe to soak it like my cerax stones until the bubbles or a bad idea to get better performance out of it. I just do not want to mess this stone up I love it already. Please let me know

    I really enjoy sharpening on my washitas. I tend to use very light pressure and I have a wide variety of washitas from very fast to several that are very dense and pass light almost as well as a translucent. They produce a nice knife edge especially with antique carbon steel and if I need to take it to a more refined edge I move to one of my translucents. I own a couple of black arks but for me the deciding factor is my ability to see the steel removed on the translucent and the fact that I can't see the difference in the edge between black and translucent.

    How are the natural stones constructed? Like the mint chocolate one looked like it had beautiful amber wood sides and a mint chocolate frosting. When I see Finnish natural sharpening stones like phyllite, it's that grey, slightly shiny and with some patterns depending on the cut, somewhat homogenous slab of stone.

    • @naturalwhetstones
      @naturalwhetstones 4 месяца назад

      The stone you are talking about is called an Ikarashi, it is a type of igneous (volcanic) rock which is primarily silica but also has other minerals in it (resulting in the color). It has dendritic formations which are the black specs. The sides that are amber are lacquered. Sounds like the Finnish stones you are talking about are likely something akin to slate.

    I watched the whole video and as someone who straight razor shaves the next step is stropping. Whether I go to a .5 micron bar or on to 30k diamond paste on a strop I have found all of this is meaningless. I know this because I have put my razors under my microscope and well, stones are one thing but we shave off the strop. It doesn’t look like you are a regular straight razor shaver and more of a salesman.

    • @naturalwhetstones
      @naturalwhetstones 5 месяцев назад

      I straight razor shave at least 3 times a week and do indeed strop, but that's not what the channel is about. You can also certainly shave directly off certain stones if one is inclined to, but not something I generally recommend. I also don't sell anything, so not sure what I'm a salesman for! Note that the video doesn't say "preparing a straight razor for shaving" but is instead a deep dive into the step using these nagura. I guess thanks for your comment either way though...

    • @naturalwhetstones
      @naturalwhetstones 5 месяцев назад

      The sealing doesn't particularly stop them from being thirsty, it is more meant to avoid cracking by limiting water ingress from anywhere but one direction (the sharpening face). It would work for a synth but I'm not sure what value it would add for you.

    • @sryslyuguys
      @sryslyuguys 5 месяцев назад

      @@naturalwhetstones ah I understand thank you. I thought that by waterproofing the sides and only having the top surface exposed, water would not drain out from the stone as quickly, thus would require less water replenishment (less thirsty). My main goal is to make the stone less thirsty and require less water. As it stands it needs to be splashed every 20-30 seconds or it dries up. Hoping to maybe only require a splash every few minutes. Is there anything else that would work for this? I think the stone is really porous so the water just goes straight through

    Is there any Ikarashi you've seen that has an excessive amount of Enshou on the surfaces?

    If there's no visible Gotogi or Masame to go off of is it possible for all surfacea of the stone (top, bottom and sides) to be used?

    • @naturalwhetstones
      @naturalwhetstones 7 месяцев назад

      Theoretically yes, there are stones that are sometimes referred to as "imo-ishi" or potato stones which are homogonous and lack gotogi or kawa. If it is this type of stone all sides could be usable. Take care though that if it is just a stone that barely shows its gotogi, pressure on that side could delaminate the layers.

      @@naturalwhetstones is there any way to identify the gotogi if they're barely showing?

    Great video, quick one. What # atoma are you using? Is it #140 - #3000, from #3000 above atoma #400 correct?

    Very interesting. Seems perfect for general carpentry chisels and plane blades. Using water means rust! So using oil is always a bonus.

      Truthfully something shouldn't rust so fast but yep, that is what they were always marketed for.

    Thank you for this! I've been using my tsushima nagura benchstone incorrectly it seems. I have this and a umajiyama namito. would preceding both with a 2k synthetic be sufficient as a complete progression?

    • @naturalwhetstones
      @naturalwhetstones 8 месяцев назад

      Yeah I would think so, and then the Tsushima likely before the Umajiyama unless it is super soft. I don't think I talk much about it in the video but soaking the Tsushima for 15 mins can help

    awesome video as always!! thanks for being an in depth english speaking jnat reviewer in the specifity of knives. A lot of youtubers speak about jnats, but most are in regards to straight razor honing with very hard / fine finishing stones

    Thank you very much for breaking it down in depth🙏 I wish they would be easier to find and price is ridiculous... Sure it should not be compared but in my humble opinion synthetic stones performs better on extremely hard alloyed steels like hap40 zdp189 or sg2... But shirogami#2 and ohira tomae is unbeatable combination❤

      Some stones can do the super hards but many stop performing well. I find for the super hards the best naturals are some form of novaculite where the pressure performance can really help.
