    Great video. If you get a microscope another interesting thing to show is how the stone looks on it. A simple cellphone flashlight with sideways illumination helps to see stone topography. Another trick is that with a ruler and an image app can help you add a scale. I haven't explored natural stones with this but for synthetics I had many interesting surprises.
    For example some hard synthetic stones respond to conditioning similar to natural stones and relative grit will depend a lot on how you condition it. I have a 220 grit stone that behaves closer to a 700 grit because I rounded the abrasive on purpose. It cuts slower and leaves a smoother edge than what you would expect for the grit.
    Very few people do stone microscopy, would be cool to see what you make of it.

    Thank you for another great video. It’s great to see a Koma bench stone in action given how expensive they are.
    Also I found your comments comparing Mejiro and Koma very interesting. Do you think doing a sort of macro photography of the scratch pattern is possible? I think it would be great to see and not just for the naguras but for all your reviews.
    In any case, it’s always exciting to get a notification that you have uploaded a video 🎉

      Thanks! I am saving up for a real nice x1000 microscope and will touch on most of the previous stones again when I have it, at minimum the Nagura for sure! For finishing stones I will do that too in each video, so should be what you want for sure.

    Hello, thank you! Very nice video. I like your website too. I hope you will share journey with microscope. It is not easy choose microscope for observing minerals and results on blades.

    I’m hypnotized by these tutorials, they’re so informative and descriptive. Do you find polishing differences between aogami and shirogami steel? I’ve got knives in each, all #2 examples of these carbon steel blades.

      Thanks Ed! Certainly sharpening they have a different feeling. Polishing a very minor difference, blue just takes longer to clear our scratches on by a small margin but obviously both are pretty similar when compared to the cladding.

    Hi there. thanks so much for your videos... I wonder if you could let me know if some JNS can be permasoaked?

    • @naturalwhetstones
      @naturalwhetstones  Год назад +1

      You can certainly soak some JNATs for a long time. I always recommend sealing the sides and back, especially if they are going to be soaked. If you have a very pure front face to the stone and no lines or anything, you could probably soak indefinitely - generally though I do not think it is advisable. I've left some handheld nagura in the water for a long time (weeks) and while nothing horrible happened, I also think you risk things starting to get a little funky in the stone if they never dry out.

      It's a knife that only really gets used for stone to stone testing so I don't really worry about it.
