Compost Enriches and Builds Healthy Soil
Conserves water and reduces water use by helping soils retain moisture. Helps prevent soil erosion by reducing soil compaction and runoff. Reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides
Recycling food and other organic waste into compost provides a range of environmental benefits, including improving soil health, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, recycling nutrients, and mitigating the impact of droughts

Bull, I used to love my compost piles. It is strange to admit that. I had four Ecobins for composting. It was rewarding to watch the temperature in those piles go up as the ingredients broke down. I had the best black compost at the end of the composting. It was black gold. I miss working with it all.

Great job, Bull! My chicks are getting big, and starting to look like chickens. It is getting difficult to tell them apart. All three Rhode Island reds are solid brown with Bella having the darkest feathers, and Trixie having the shortest tail feathers. The Speckled Sussex are almost identical in looks with Raven being the larger of the two, and-Ariel has attitude! She bites and pecks hard. I think she has assumed the role as the top matriarch and is asserting her dominance. LOL. If chickens had teeth, I’d have bloody stumps for hands. They all come running whenever they see me, as I am the bearer of treats. This morning it was a cucumber, small tomato, and a handful of chard leaves. It was gone in less than a minute. All of the chicks will eat scratch grains from the palm of my hand. I give them about three quarters of a cup, every three days, about a quarter of it goes to hand feeding, and the rest is divided with half going into their pine shaving bedding, so they keep it mixed up, and the rest is spread out on the ground. Gotta keep the junk food to a minimum. Later in the fall, I’ll give them treats to boost their protein, and calcium. I am thinking about growing sunflowers in the orchard next year for bird food, and I can use the stalks for plant stakes the following year. The plum tree that had me concerned is putting out a lot of new growth. Getting rid of the moss mats was the solution. They made a good fire. The Prairie Fire crabapple tree is out of the danger zone. It hasn’t put out any new growth which is okay. It is a sign that it is developing roots. I’ve changed the watering schedule to twice a week until fall, then I’ll cut back to weekly. The peach trees have quadrupled in size since being transplanted. The Fuji apple tree has put out new branches, and will have to be pruned down in the winter after it goes dormant. It is easily ten feet tall. I want to cut it back to eight feet tall, so I can reach high enough to spray it to prevent fungus infections. Cedar Gal Rust is everywhere here. It will kill apple trees. It is easier to prevent it, than to treat it. I am looking forward to harvesting cherries and apples next year. The plums will be at least one more year, and the peaches, are a few years away. It is way too hot to sow seeds here. The day time temperatures are in the low to mid 90s in the shade most days, triple digits in the sun. I lost about half of my Brunswick Cabbage seedlings, but may have enough to transplant when they get a little bigger. As soon as the weather cools a bit, I plan on sowing seeds for Nappa Cabbage, Pak Choi, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, Swiss Chard, carrots, beets, and turnips. Around Oct, 1st, I’ll plant garlic and sow seeds for parsnips and radish. I am hoping for a mild winter after last year. I want snow too. The garden will survive it.

It’s so nice to hear your chicks have grown up and looking like chickens now. Ariel, is the Queen and will be respected or else 😅 My Chickens come running from the woods to meet me on my back lawn when they hear me open my back door. I’m definitely keeping all my fruit trees around 8ft for easier handling and picking. Looks like your fruit trees are growing nicely that’s awesome
