Hi Bull. Sorry to hear about Peaches passing away. You did your best to help her, and comfort her. My little flock are in their sixth week, and are almost completely feathered. Goldie lost all of her tail feathers, but new feathers have grown in. I do not believe it was from bullying or excessive preening. I think it was juvinile shedding. What is strange, is she is the only one that has done so. The pecking order is changeing, and I do not believe she is the top hen in the coop any longer. I'm not sure which one has taken her place. Every day, it looks like she is losing more of her white spots. She and Trixie are almost indistinguishable. Bella has darker feathers making it easy to tell her apart from the other Rhode Island Reds. Raven and Ariel are hard to tell apart. Raven has more white on her chest and a wider sadle. Viewed from either profile, they look like twins. Next week, I start training them with scratch feed, and soon after that, soldierfly larva. They are already friendly with me, and do not fear my presence. I've decorated their chicken run with cut logs, an eight foot dogwood branch to roost on, a large ceramic bowl filled with sand for dust baths, two mirrors with pecking toys, and a toy xylophone. Last on the list is a peck toy that slowly releases treats. Oh, and a bale of straw to spread inside the main run. The area under the chicken coop will be left bare dirt.
That’s awesome so glad to hear your babies are growing up into beautiful hens. Goldie’s tail will grow back even more beautiful. That made remember when my old rooster Ike, lost his tail to Dr. Ricci’s Golden Doodle. Looks like the girls have a really nice chicken run. Peaches, had a good life and I’m at peace with that
@@TheBullsGarden All of the feathers have grown back behind the saddle. Her last two feathers lost were the outer feathers. They are already growing back. The fast replacment is one of the things that leads me to believe it was juvinile shedding, and not from plucking. There was a big behavior change today. Instead of returning to the coop and perching on the roosting bar, they gathered in the shade under the chicken coop. I witnessed Raven and Goldie gave a warning call, and the other three chickens took shelter under the chicken coop. Seconds later, the shadow of a hawk passed over the tarp covering the chicken run. They are covered and totally safe from aerial predators.
The chickens we have today isn't as hardy as the ones I grew up with. Never in all my childhood years did we have a chicken get egg bound, lost a few to predators but they were free range and we were surrounded by thick forest. Our dogs usually killed any critters that came for a chicken supper, but every once in awhile a skunk would slip by them but as soon as they heard the chicken squack they got the skunk and we could smell and see the evidence. You couldn't wash the dogs enough to get rid of the stink, much of it had to wear off.
@@marysurbanchickengarden Most definitely, they knew they were going to get sprayed but still defended the hens. I’ve lost chickens but still free range my chickens because they’re much healthier and happier. God bless my friend

Sorry for your loss, brother Bull. We had a chicken last month same thing happened, I've changed the way im trying to help them out when they are egg bound, a African woman said to use a turkey brassier and salt water to stick up there to relieve the eggs. I've tried it, and it worked . Your thoughts?
i had that happen to two of my chickens. i did the same thing, they still died. i cant handle death so im trying to find someone to take the rest of my chicks. i cant do it any more. so far i have had five chicks die. i could feel the egg. they just wouldnt release.
