I am still having a hard time doing pottery right now. I did want to share a kiln opening Grethchen has just had. In this process, I have gotten some ideas for things I would like to do. I have a garden and am thinking of garden decorations. 🤔 I am also thinking about making some fermentation weights.
Kiln Opening: A Refire

Hello everyone. Back from a hiatus from making pottery and videos. We had a family tragedy. My middle daughter passed away, and it has been hard to find the joy I usually have in things. My attention span is down, and drive is down right now. I know this is a normal part of grief. Hopefully, I can get some encouragement and support as this place is navigated. I refired 2 bowls that I made back ...

Getting ready for my first booth show. Very short on presentable pottery since lately my focus was on experimental glazes. What are the chances I will pull it off. This video comes after the show. Take a guess and see if you are correct. Should I add that 90% of the pieces were put in wet? Like made the night before loading the kiln that morning?

Glaze Talk. Store bought or home made?

So this is the age old question in pottery. Do I buy my glazes or mix my own? what kind of costs am I looking at? there are benefits to both and I like both. Buying the pints is convenient and really repeatable. mixing your own can be cheaper. you can tweak it and get different looks. not everyone uses the same glaze. You have to be careful about specific gravity I am attempting to become an Am...

You have had it rough! Glad everything is better! Nice kiln opening. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much!
It's great to see you back! I'm so sorry you went through all of that, but I'm so glad you are still here among the living! It's so nice to see pots from you!
I am glad to still be able to be around lol
Good to see you again Kat! And with lovely pieces, your blue glaze is beautiful!
@@nukuaceramicsbonaire thank you so much! It is good to be back
Sorry you’ve had such a difficult year. Glad to see you back and capturing your joy. Nice job with the glazes.
@lindaking8035 thanks for sticking with me.
Glad you’re back. So glad you found your joy.

I’m so sorry to hear of all of that but so glad you and your husband are well now. The artifact piece is amazing! What a great idea. I feel like it would look really cool in a flower bed!! May I ask how you aresol spray glazes? I know I’ve seen you spray pots but not sure if that’s the same as aerosol.
@@micheledickey4066 I posted a link in the comments. I will post a future video showing how I use it. Thanks for the idea!
Please, make more of these test tile videos! ❤
I’ve been thinking of you. I pray all is well. Hope to see new videos soon.
Oh. My. Gosh! I nominate you as my spirit animal! Going to head over to your channel and can't wait to see what else you've been up to. I love your energy and enginuity, and I look forward so much to all I have to learn from you yay!!
"Tour de Fleece" lol, awesome concept
I like the Chun with Licorice 13:20 and Lynette's Opal with Licorice 17:57. The pink is beautiful but I don't understand the recipe 16:59
Amazing pottery making.
I’m in the same situation. Aiming for cone 5 but getting a perfect 6. The good news that the firing is pretty consistent top to bottom. That was a great demonstration for showing how to do a cone offset. Thanks I had to laugh, it’s so frustrating sometimes.
Those are beautiful! Keep on keeping on fellow potter. I've never been a mother, but I lost my dad tragically so I understand grief and it's brutal. I commend you for getting yourself back into the clay. <3
Thank you so much
Good for her! They look great! Make sure to apply the glazes in different directions to not get the streaks and you’ll be good to go.
They turned out beautifully

Thank you
Really cool stuff
She has worked so hard on it
love what was done too the wheel, it looks lovely
Thank you!!
I had a daughter that passed away and you are absolutely correct in saying that you lose your joy. Somehow, little by little the need to create comes back. Life for you is altered permanently but the sharp edges of your broken heart will smooth and you will be able to create with the live of your daughter by your side. Lovely bowls. They are a testament to your need to survive this tragedy. ❤
Thank you for such a nice comment. I am so sorry your daughter passed away. I will be thinking of you. It is very hard.
@Kat Atkinson Yes it is, as you know. Take care!
Don’t be so hard on yourself. Your bowls are so beautiful.
Thank you
I hope you don't throw them away. They are beautiful. I couldn't see anything wrong with them. The shape and colors are amazing.
They have some pinholes and really thin glazed areas
They are beautiful. Your too hard on your self. Hope your family is well
My middle daughter passed away so it has been really hard
oh Kat how tragic for you. i can't imagine anything worse. i always enjoy watching your videos as you are showing everything that works and doesn't work and as another potter 1,000s of miles away I love the journey and your work. nothing can heal you, but if you can find joy in your pottery then more power to you. from one mother to another.
Thank you so much. Have lost my joy momentarily. It will come back. Have some things in mind but not motivated to do them yet
Im so very sorry for your problems....I will be sending "good healing vibes" out to the Universe for you. Hoping that helps. Stay Well, stay as positive as you can. and OMG the Bowls ARE BEAUTIFUL! (and p.s. I love your Advancer shelves...Im jealous!)
I bought 2 advances when the hospital gave us the covid blood money (lots of overtime) wish I had more. I have lost a lot of my motivation but it will come back with time. I thank ypu for your comment
Beautiful colors!!
Thank you!
WOW, Kat, those are GORGEOUS Thank you for sharing 😍👍💖
Thank you so much.
They are beautiful
Thank you so much 💓
Did those grow in your garden 😊
Lol. I wish!
We are our own worst critic. Many times pots I’m really disappointed in are the first to sell. They are beautiful. Glad you are able to work through your sorrow. Clay is best therapy
It is. Just gotta get the MOJO back
Both of them are absolutely beautiful. I hope you don’t throw them away. I want you to have a great day too! Please do be gentle with yourself.
Thank you
Your video is excellent. I have a KIWI 1. i need help knowing when to use small and large grooves on flyer and on the wheel? I hope you can help. Can’t seem to find answer anywhere.
Sorry. The large grooves are easier to use as a beginner. Your feet go faster than hands :-). I still do that. When I spun cotton or silk I drop down to the little Grove. It speeds up the wheel and goes a lot faster. Ask anything you want. I am here to help
@@KatAtkinson Thank you. So if i use larger groove on flyer then use larger groove on wheel at same time. Same with smaller grooves?
@Kay Bussjaeger you can mix and match but larger Grove on flier and larger on wheel will go slower.
We don’t see the pinholes, but the glaze combinations turned out beautiful! And I didn’t know that the reason for underfiring is because the kiln is not full. It’s a very valuable video! Thank you🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you for being so kind
are you happy with the size kiln you got? Also, how do you like your advancer shelves?
I love love the advancer shelves. I was only able to get 2 but wish I had a kiln full of them. I am really happy with my L&L kiln. It is the e23t-3. It is 6.7 cubic foot. Lots of the people on RUclips have this size. My first kiln was 2.6 cubic foot and I was able to put a lot in it too. It really depends on your electrical capacity. My electrical box is 200 amp so it could tolerate the 60 amp 240 breaker. I Had my small one on a 50 amp breaker. If I am not doing tons of pottery then it does take a little while to fill up but when I am going strong I can run a few kiln loads in a week
I feel your pain but give it time, you might just change your mind about how those pieces turned out. I built an electric to gas conversion kiln and after 2 years of experimenting I'm just reaching the point where more pots are keepers than throwaways due to glaze and firing issues. Is there a reason you don't set the cones in front of the peek holes?
The only reason this last time is the way I had to load the shelves because of the size of the bowls. I have a hard time seeing the cones either way even when in front of peeps when I night fire which is most of the time. I have the special glasses but it is still hard for me. Daytime I can usually tell. I am a night shift nurse so off nights is when I usually fire. The best I can figure...because last cone 5 five firing was great...I did not have the kiln packed much at all. I should have put more kiln furniture in to compensate. I guess anyway. If it does it again I will back off on thermocouple offset. Kilns even the digital ones are super finicky lol
@@KatAtkinson Keep up the good work.
Thank you
Really nice kiln opening, some good looking pottery.
Thank you so much! I was happy 😊
I am so sorry for this. Happy, blissful, good health and full of abundance New Year 2023 to you and to everyone.
Thank you so much. I hope you have a very blessed and abundant new year
thank you for sharing Good morning a new year
Thank you so much!
I still think they look fantastic. They look like galaxy bowls 😀
That is kinda what I am going for. But the galaxy keeps exploding and imploding. It might be a black hole lol
special sharing
Thank you
I know your kiln did not get up to temperature and there is a little bit of crawling… But I think the bowls are actually beautiful and that glaze combinations are great! I think after you retire they will be stunning.
I have high hopes for them after refire.
I think the bowls are beautiful
Thank you. Only problem is the outside is streaky because I was trying to keep them from funding so I under did it. The inside crawled because I overdid it. Then the kiln underfired and caused pinholes. I am hoping a refire after touch up will make them presentable
Oh so sorry it didn’t come out right. I wonder why it didn’t get up to temperature.
I have a few thoughts on that. Mostly, I think it was because the kiln was not loaded very heavily. I should have packed more kiln furniture in it. Second, it was cold outside. Don't think that had as much to do with it because it did get to somewhat temperature with no error message. I babysit my kiln, so I know I had no error. Usually I fire to cone 6 but did not want to risk dripping
I could FEEL your disappointment. -Feel bad this has happened to you. The forms are really cool. I'm finding for myself its a real numbers game. I have a very small percentage that I really like. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. Epic disappointment. But will work on them today and refire tomorrow. Hoping for better results.
@@KatAtkinson Will be fun to see the next opening!!😍
I hope I save them but will for sure so the results
Oh honey that’s too bad!! Are the white blotches crawling? Just make sure there is absolutely no dust on it at all. I’m so sorry. I think the biggest problem is that it’s too cold outside. When the kiln is firing and it’s less than 40 outside your computer will usually throw an error code. I’m surprised it didn’t. So even if the temp in the kiln were to get up to what you need the kiln is going to cool down WAAAY too fast. Remember that the heat work is what the witness cones react to. I’m pretty sure it was just too cold. Also did you leave your peeps in? I didn’t see them in the holes. Good luck sweetie.
I did have peeps in. I took them out just before opening. I did get all the dust off. The problem with this shape is that the base layer gets too thick in places. I need to spray glaze vs. pour or brush. Was too cold to set up the spraying area. I did cone 5 instead of cone 6 because this shape also has trouble with running. It was pretty cold out there. I picked the first non rainy above 40 day that week. The temp did drop below 40 towards the end of firing. I was expecting an error as well, but it kept firing. I am going to modify it by spraying next time and sticking with cone 6. Hopefully, that will stop the crawling. ...I hope
What is the best beginner kiln? My wifey and I want to start pottery!
It really depends on your budget... I started with a manual kilnsitter that is 2.6 cubic feet. My L&l e23t-3 is a digital and I got it used. You can spend as little or as much as you like. My small one got used for 80-100 with all the kiln furniture. My L&L was used 2500.00. New could be double that.thrn electric is a lot too. I have to say I love my L&L because how easy it is to repair and change out the elements and other things that can go bad. It has 3 heat zones for a more even fire. It has 3 inch bricks
That snowman ⛄️ plates are unique and beautiful
I can't believe the snowman plate made it out alive lol. Nobody bought it so my husband claimed it :-)
Beautiful
Thank you so much 💓
