Gravely Diesel Repower - Complete Build
Crackpot. You pour hot water on the head.
This is a really awesome canoe. I just recently learned about them. I’m trying to build my own diy version and I’ve got the sail but I’m not sure the best position for the mast and leeboard. I was wondering if you would measure the distance from the center of your dagger board slot to the center of the mast step? I have a 72sf sail so it should be about the same as your set up.
@@YdocFrench I can take a look for you. If you are doing a conversion, I would look at the Grumman sailing canoes for resources.
@@haoleboyshow-tos2279 thank you. I have been looking at those as well and found a guy on eBay who makes replica parts. I have the sunfish mast and spars so I’m trying to make that work. I can either get a sunfish sail or mini fish sail 66sf or 80sf and I’d like to have the largest sail possible but within reason. Having an outrigger should allow me to fly a larger sail without capsizing as easily.
thanks for the explanation, i have a question , i wanna know if the ko3 rebuild kit is the same for the ko3S ?
@@sadness3out961 I am not familiar with the K03s it appears to be the same, but I can’t say for sure.
@@haoleboyshow-tos2279 thank you for the answer is the ko3s that you rebuilt still working well after all that time ?
@@sadness3out961 Yes, it is still working from what I know, but I don’t own the car anymore. I put about 3000 miles on it before selling

@haoleboyshow-tos2279 cheers for the reply. That was siezed when the turbo was on the original engine. Freed off now. Only thing I ain't changed is the maf
@@davidhenderson7722 Does it cut power when you first start driving it? Mine would do that before going into limp mode and not giving any boost
Mine is a tank off-road but my god going down hill in snow it’s a sled
@@mroberts4847 It is pretty slippery in the snow, but still very capable. Take a look at my other Xterra video. We take it out in some rough snowy conditions.
Would I have to take this into consideration if I changed the plunger stroke? To clarify, I built an 11mm pump from various parts for an IDI to DI converted 1.8 litre ford diesel engine. I used the cam plate from a VP44 pump that ran the engine I had the DI internals from and that has 3.2mm of lift. The control leavers I'm using came from a 10mm pump that had only 2.4 lift. Having a hard time trying to get it to idle with out it just revving on its own. If I back the max fuel off to get it to idle and rev, it has no power. Any idea?
@@austinmaxi Hey, that’s a great question. I was under the impression that the cam stroke was the same between IDI and DI, but that may just be with the VW stuff. I haven’t actually been brave enough to rebuild this yet so I will check with my piece parts and get back to you.
@@haoleboyshow-tos2279 I have wondered weather the arm, attached to the throttle shaft that the governor spring set is attached to is too short.. a longer one would, I think.. allow the control leavers a bit more range.. (certainly when winding up the max fuel) looking through my parts I have a governor that has a longer arm to it, so I'll give that ago..There's not many people to bounce ideas off these days or mess with old diesels any more so your videos are gold to people that do! I have been blissfully unaware about control leaver throw till i found your video!
WIND CHILL DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY
Figuring all on paper and take a Chilled approach first is cheaper than Buying all those parts, LOL
@@user-te9op3hj8g You’re right. I was just tempted by the idea of a cheap upgrade to Dana 44s.

I've been watching this build from the start, just so happened I picked up a datsun 520 I wanted to SAS as well, but it's cool that we've somehow come down the same path on axles - I've got a ln106 axle from a hilux for the front sas and the rear diff out of an ifs N60 model, running n70 rear springs for hopefully a little more flex, cool to see the build progressing man!

The fact the clock guy was about to charge $500+ for putting the weight cord back on the pulley was absolutely ridiculous, I fix antique clocks as a hobby and I wouldn't have charged anything
They’re kind of a fancy boutique place and they wanted to overhaul it. There probably is something off in the mechanism because it seems to be a little fussy. Will fall out of time with no apparent change except the weather.
@@haoleboyshow-tos2279 i would say study how the mechanism itself is constructed, clean out all the pivot holes with a toothpick or pipe cleaner and put a little bit of fresh oil into it. These old 30 hour American movements are pretty beginner-friendly and will run well with little maintenance
I forgot to mark the compressor turbine wheel. It has marks that show it's been previously balanced. Is there anything I can do without taking for a rebalance?
Someone mentioned in the comments that they are individually balanced. I haven’t been able to verify, but you won’t need to worry about alignment if true.
Hello from Greece.. I like your work.. smart thinking.. I tried to put pump from AAZ in 1Z 1.9 m-tdi conversion.. but as you know it doesn't work. Do you have any developments on this? Thanks anyway..

I have one of these, it's brand spanking new and after about 4 hours of run time it's already leaking. Got a link to where I can find the service manual?
I was using the Yanmar L100 manual. It can be found on their website.
Great stuff. Never had a B4 myself, but I recently rescued 2 B5.5 TDi's from the scrapyard.
Good man. Always had a soft spot for the B5.5 aesthetic. I’ve never had one though, I’m too much of a stick shift hipster.
@@haoleboyshow-tos2279 I'm in N.Ireland so 99% of them are diesel with a manual transmission. It's extremely rare to see a Passat with either a petrol engine or auto gearbox over here. The 2 cars cost me £400 total to buy (around $500) and have been driving them collectively for 7 years. I do know a guy with a B4 Passat GT which needs restoring. I've been trying to buy it off him for years but he wont sell
Sad to see those passats in the junkyard. This makes me miss my b4 estate, too bad there isn’t really any left in my country. Greetings from the Netherlands🤙🏻
The estates/wagons were always rare here in the states. I’ve only ever seen one. They’re great cars though I’m keeping mine alive as long as I can.
I can't find an engine/ motor plate for the life of me. Any advice?
Do you mean the engine itself, or the throttle plate? Not quite sure what you mean.
@@haoleboyshow-tos2279 You can Google predator motor plate and see an image of what I mean. Basically what I'm looking for is a plate of steel with pre-drilled holes for this engine so when I mount it it's not crooked and I'm not having chain popping off issues
You lucked out on getting one with electric start too..... most dont' have it.
If you’re looking used, the Silent Diesel style enclosed generators are usually good. The last 2 I got came from those and had starters. I plugged the hour meter from this one in and found it only has 2 hours on it.
Pollo 👍
Love almost everything about this video. I do want to say that it is important that you position the open part of the turbine retaining ring, the snap ring that the journal bearing sits on and the compressor backing plate snap ring upwards or against gravity if your center cartridge won't be perfectly upright. If you don't you'll have oil leaks through the small crevice into your housings
Good to know. I’ll keep it in mind for next time
Wow! You did have a windy day! Look at those foam lines on the water. You were really MOVING! With Charlotte's weight in the bow cockpit, was water coming in over the bow? I imagine that taking a reef made things a lot more manageable in that wind. I'm about to buy a Saroca, too, so this was very interesting. We love the Adirondacks, too, especially Long Lake and the High Peaks around Wilmington. Great trout fishing. Thanks for a great video!
We never had water coming in, but it was very splashy up there and the water was too cold to be getting splashed 😊
Very insightful video, thank you for sharing this. I am wondering what machining does need to be done to rebuild this engine. Does it get bored/honed to a larger diameter piston and do the rod and mains get turned down for oversize bearings? I have two of these engines and three of the smaller 3hp jobs (168cc). Use them for backup generator power. I see replacement piston/rings and bearing kits on Ebay but no indication of whether they are standard or oversize. Thank you for any information you can share and keep the videos coming!
I have never bothered to plasti dip or check these engines. The one in this video had 2 hours on it, and the other had 20. Neither showed visible wear so I kept with the factory bearing.
What is the torque setting on the retainer plate please
@@declanveale5849 The crank bearing retaining plate I tightened to 20 ft-lbs.
So I have the body work done. Now im on to the engine. A lot of wires are hot and not plugged. I’ve been watching your videos over n over trying to figure them out since i have this truck now
Nice voyage, but y'all are NUTS! The cost of being wrong going under those bridges and gates is just way too high. I'm about to buy a 1993 Saroca, so I'll be joining the fun soon.
Something shorter like a sunfish sail would be great. We were really expecting the bridges to be marked.
WAS THAT A 4L30E TRANS?
Yes, the Isuzu trooper uses a 4L30E.
We need more Gravely videos❤❤❤❤❤❤
This is an old video. I have been hard at work with Gravely stuff since then. Check some of my other vids.
I’m replacing the piston and rings in my 186 clone. Do you know where I can find the ring end gap specification? Thank you
That is not something I have found. I will take a look though as ring gap will be critical for my plan to add a turbo.
Nice conversion to diesel. The reel mower gave a nice cut although it seemed light in the front against the heavy diesel engine in the back. PaulL
Yes it’s a little light. That mixed with the bumpy back yard made it tough to go fast. The diesel isn’t as heavy as people think since it’s all aluminum. It’s pretty similar to the original Kohler in weight.
Such a cool project!
Thanks! Stick around, I got more plans for it.
Did you finish the build yet? I’m thinking about buying an 82 Volvo 245 for 200usd but it doesn’t run anymore so I’m searching for ideas on what it could be
No, I was unable to peel the last stuck piston out of the block.
I heard you could pour some hot water on the injector/cylinder head.
Maybe in an absolute emergency. If that doesn’t start it then the whole thing will be an icicle.
Vw and Audi turbos are unreliable /fragile Junk ! no if's ands or buts.
The valve lash on the intake and exhaust is the same ? I thought intake is .006 and ex is .008
I was reading off the Yanmar L100 manual. It said .006 and .006. The manual is free online.
@haoleboyshow-tos2279 ok I have the F186 clone in my kipor genset. The kipor tech told me .006 and .008 (they are all the same Chinese clones) but I do see some info saying IN is 0.15mm (.006) and Ex is a range 0.15 to 0.2 (.006 to .008) so I guess the tech gave the upper end of range.. looser is better than too tight I guess.
@@ShorrockPaul Good to know. Is that info available online anywhere? I have only been able to find resources from Yanmars.
This was great! Do you have video of re assembly..
Just seen your re assembly vid. Great stuff. Thanks for this
@@ShorrockPaul Glad it was helpful.
How well did this engine run for you. I have a very heavy go kart that I was thinking about using this engine on. I am not wanting to go fast, but just to make the go kart good and trail worthy.
Works great. I used it on a tractor, but it should work well on larger karts. It makes like 9hp and 20ft-lbs. as long as it’s not side-by-side big it should be plenty strong.
That kind of lathe seems exactly as the kind I need. Small, simple bench top mount, that does not weigh a ton, yet long and laminate wise sturdy enough for typical yesterday farm works. Todays infamous chinesium minis and Myfords are just too small :D At next opportunity/talk with the guy, could you have a look or ask him for model identifications ?
It’s a Southbend 9” or Model A. Motor under variant. I’m in a similar boat looking for something small but not too small.

I just put a 186FA on a log splitter. I want to try to limit the diesel exhaust factor and this seems promising.
