Why do so many people use reducers with sct's i mean isn't the focal length the reason you bought it.

The AVX was my first mount and I admit I had problems at first. Mine is very capable of great guiding. It wasn't always the case though. I now use a mini PC with CPWI, N.I.N.A., and the star sense auto guider. With that setup I get just as good of guiding as my EQ6r pro. Main thing I've found is don't overload it. Mine came with an 8" Newtonian that, in my opinion, was way to heavy for photography, even though it was marketed as such. With my Redcat 71/QHY183 setup it does great at 5min exposures. One issue I still have is you have to remember the combination to plug in and turn on everything or CPWI will give you issues connecting to it. I wasted quite a bit of time to figure that out...........

Hi! I am just starting out with this hobby and got a rig together around March 2024. I was able to get a nice small refractor, guide scope, strain wave mount, Windows mini computer to run N.I.N.A., EAF, and I had two small uncooled cameras to start off with. I live outside of Toronto and wasn’t expecting much in the beginning. I was going to try OSC on broadband galaxies and try Ha on the mono camera. I expected very little in Bortle 8/9 skies. I was blown away by being able to image some nice galaxies and it completely changed my expectations. I decided to continue with OSC and bought a nice 533 cooled color camera. I just have to learn how to properly process the images but it is all seemingly coming together. Never thought I’d be able get a rig working overnight from my backyard and allowing me to sleep while the rig is working hard all night so quickly. Many thanks to all the great resources on RUclips. Thank you for your insight on OSC vs mono it now makes more sense as I discover what is possible.

I have a totally different experience and do not agree with your conclussions. I have an AVX that I purchased last year (2023). I have an Edge HD 8 mounted on it. I use a HyperStar, an ASI183MM'pro with a filter drawer, an ASAIR Plus 256 GB, an ASI220mm guide camera, the Celestton GPS SkyAlign, along with the PLL Alto and Giotto, and the StarSense. I have had no issues with it tracking. It does a maervelous job. I ran into some of the issues you mentioned, and it was the ASAIR Plus. The problem was that whenever I entered into the ASAIR from my tablet, it was getting the wrong location coordinates, even when I manually entered the correct ones before connecting. Now I enteer frm my phone, which has the right coordinates, and since, it works beautifully and at the end, it parks my mount at the home position. There is a video from Astrobender on the process to get it right with ASAIR, and he is gott it right. When I use it with the Eagle5 and using NINA and CPI, I use the StarSense Autoguider and have zero issues. It guides and moves smoothly. I take exposures anywhere from 30 to 120 seconds long, depending on the target, and rarely have to discard shots (most of the time, it is because shooting stars or the police chopper just getting in the way). Lastly, you can set RA limits in the mount via the hand controller or via CPWI.

Q. You actually started with a "Baby Sized" 70mm scope? W O W ! I know plenty of folks that began with an ancient or even homemade 6 inch Newtonian. But a 70mm ? I'm speechless!

Print on metal, choose satin sheen, not gloss or high gloss. Way more expensive, but better.

Looks like you had a short window of time to capture this amazing target. And the final image rocks. I live in the Southern Hemisphere and to be honest, I think the Andromeda galaxy looks awesome (which we can't see most of the time here.) Though someone else here in Australia did manage to capture the Andromeda galaxy at some point in the year when it was close to the horizon. The clarity wasn't great but that was to be expected. Still, he succeeded and that's the main thing. I would like to photograph the same subject - I'll have to check if it's possible from my latitude on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. Alas, I have no telescope or star tracker. Just a regular mirrorless camera with a variety of lenses and a tripod. Hopefully, shooting a whole bunch of light frames with calibration frames and stacking might produce something half decent.

Great information!! I do have a question. If I invest in the filters for the one shot camera, do they carry over to the monochrome if I upgrade at some point? Or are they completely unnecessary when doing a monochrome camera?

What about dew challenges on the corrector plate? I see you are using a dew shield. Do you need to use a dew heater? If so, does that affect star size/shape as others have noted?

Another beautiful image James. This is a great looking galaxy and I checked to see what it would look like in the StellaMira 90mm refractor in Spain and was disappointed to see it was too small for that scope.

Hi there! I wanted to let you know that I watched your video and found it very informative. I noticed that the AM3 mount is currently on sale, and I'm interested to know your thoughts on this mount and what payload capacity you would recommend. I'm planning to start with EAA and do some light astrophotography after many years of just visual observing. I recently bought an S50 and am no longer interested in visual observing. I want to keep my setup as light as possible, so maybe a refractor or a 6" SCT. I'm eagerly waiting for your thoughts on the AM3 mount. Thanks!
