  • In this video I show the processing workflow I used on this image of NGC 891 and surrounding galaxies. There are over 200 galaxies in this image. The biggest one, NGC 891 is around 30 million light years from us. The "medium" sized galaxies are 200-300 million light years from us.
    Equipment used for this shot:
    Telescope: AT115EDT
    Camera: ZWO ASI1600MM
    Mount: SkyWatcher EQ6R Pro

Wow James, when you removed those stars and the galaxies showed... freaking amazing!!

I knew that there were a lot of galaxies in this frame.. but I didn't know there were so many :)

I agree. Widefield galaxy shots are amazing. I say, often, 'stirring'. I'm late to this video, but I'm catching up. Great job James. Your talent is overdue for an APOD.

Excellent video James! I also like wide field galaxy images! NGC891 looks fantastic, nicely processed, I like your blending masks trick in pixelmath, a+b😀 I’ll be trying that out for sure! I’m a fan of Markarians Chain, in particular NGC 4435 & 4438 The Eyes! Can’t quite get my head around your little galaxies are 200 million plus light years away! Crazy, that’s why we love this hobby 👍 Clear skies

Thank you Simon, I love these widefield galaxy shots. Markarians Chain is the one that got me started on these types of shots :)

This is a fantastic image and I think galaxy cluster images are underrated. The number of galaxies here is astounding. Interestingly, at the end when you showed the starless and then star-full images, to me the galaxies really came to life when the stars appeared (which I was expecting to be the other way around).

Fantastic image James. I love a widefield galaxy shots as well. Tightly cropped images are great but you lose the sense of scale that a widefield shot provides.
