Testing how radioactive Sydney is
I wanted to know how radioactive my neighbourhood is, so I got a Geiger-Müller and tested it. In this video, I explain what a GM counter is and talk about radiation exposure.
The GM counter I used in this video was a FS-5000 model.

    I'm also for a ban until we figure that out. However, I personally believe that AI isn't sentient, because they don't fit Descartes' requirements of sentience/consciousness, being possessing a body and an immortal soul. Even though, going into this direction poses to many ethical questions. We cannot measure the soul, since it lays outside of our scientific paradigm, but we are able to logically prove it's existence. I refer you to Descartes meditations on first philosophy if you want logical proof of God, the immortality of the soul and the exterior world.

    Agency is what hits us. That, and we will have to connect pleasure and pain as energy charge equivalent. The laws of Karma. Otherwise you're not convincing anyone. We do have SOME understanding that pain and pleasure to have a price, but we still haven't attached that to the concept of balance. We are brought up to believe Nature is not a player, that there is no overarching organizing force, no pain or pleasure we create is written in our account (Karma). That was reserved for religions. But if you take a book like Torah, it's not religious in the typical way, it has a great similarity to a book of natural sciences. As science talks about the unified field, Torah also talks about it as the Allmighty field of sentient organizing force. And it DOES keep tally on the pain and suffering one species inflicts upon others. Personally I think that in our 'materialism' where we dismiss the possibility of Nature keeping tabs on pain we inflict, we somehow are trying to screw with the 1st Law of thermodynamics. So Nature in the big sense might (and somehow I'm sure WILL) interfere in all that and just whacks our planet with something so hard, all these unethical toys wlll simply be wiped out. And we start from scratch. That's what I think is gonna happen.

    The type of geiger counter you are using is incapable of detecting the radiation in food or radioluminescent exit signs. At a minimum you should be using a detector with a mica window to allow the alpha and lower energy beta rays through. Ideally it would be the 2" pancake probe type, and have a timed count function so you can make statistically significant measurments. The unit you have should be fine for measuring background gamma radiation, but you still need to average the counts over time for the readings to carry any value as a measurment, unless the measured value is significantly above background levels.

      Oh nice! I really like to give feedback on up and coming RUclipsrs! I was surprised to see that you haven't got that many followers, which really speaks highly of your production quality! It would be nice to have some visual comparison between the things you measured instead of just getting a lot of numbers which can be hard to keep in your head. I also wanted to see what a radioactive smoke alarm puts out! The connection between sieverts and becquerel units would be nice too, and maybe a bit more thorough info of sieverts in the beginning of the video! At one point it looked like you read from a screen that was quite a bit below the camera, maybe try and have the manuscript closer to the camera? The spaceship looking background was fine but when it moved it did it too fast in my opinion, it should be very subtle. Uranium glass would also be cool to see, and maybe more things that are made with radioactive materials, like some clocks and whatever else. Anyway I hope this comment doesn't come across as too negative because that is not my intention! Looking forward to follow your growth! Cheers

    Hi there, is there any theories as to why the water fell to approx 11~KM beneath the surface? Is there a different layer or composition of soil at that depths which makes the water settle / stay in place?

    • @spacescienceguy
      @spacescienceguy Месяц назад

      Excellent question! This paper didn't really try to answer how the water might have gotten there, but one possible explanation is that the water just reached that depth through typical groundwater processes, which would imply that the rock above it was permeable enough for the water to reach there. As for why it's there specifically and not deeper, maybe the rock beneath that point just isn't permeable enough. On Earth, water can get very deep through plate tectonics dragging the water down along with the rock over very long timescales. Mars doesn't seem to have plate tectonics, so we can probably rule that option out.

You might find this paper interesting though: www.cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S0896-6273(22)00806-6 Particularly: "We have emphasized the requirement for embodiment in neural systems for goal-directed learning to occur". When they tested their first system, Dishbrain, with Pong they argued that it was effectively 'embodied' in the virtual game. Embodiment in this case seems to be a closed feedback loop where the neural culture receives feedback on the causal effects of its actions in the environment.
