Testing how radioactive Sydney is
I wanted to know how radioactive my neighbourhood is, so I got a Geiger-Müller and tested it. In this video, I explain what a GM counter is and talk about radiation exposure.
The GM counter I used in this video was a FS-5000 model.

When I found out about Cortical Labs’ work, I wanted to learn more and understand how they were treating the ethical aspects of synthetic biological intelligence (SBI). In particular, I wanted to know how we can make sure the end systems don’t have moral wort...

I'm also for a ban until we figure that out. However, I personally believe that AI isn't sentient, because they don't fit Descartes' requirements of sentience/consciousness, being possessing a body and an immortal soul. Even though, going into this direction poses to many ethical questions. We cannot measure the soul, since it lays outside of our scientific paradigm, but we are able to logically prove it's existence. I refer you to Descartes meditations on first philosophy if you want logical proof of God, the immortality of the soul and the exterior world.
I hate JP.. so full of it!
Agency is what hits us. That, and we will have to connect pleasure and pain as energy charge equivalent. The laws of Karma. Otherwise you're not convincing anyone. We do have SOME understanding that pain and pleasure to have a price, but we still haven't attached that to the concept of balance. We are brought up to believe Nature is not a player, that there is no overarching organizing force, no pain or pleasure we create is written in our account (Karma). That was reserved for religions. But if you take a book like Torah, it's not religious in the typical way, it has a great similarity to a book of natural sciences. As science talks about the unified field, Torah also talks about it as the Allmighty field of sentient organizing force. And it DOES keep tally on the pain and suffering one species inflicts upon others. Personally I think that in our 'materialism' where we dismiss the possibility of Nature keeping tabs on pain we inflict, we somehow are trying to screw with the 1st Law of thermodynamics. So Nature in the big sense might (and somehow I'm sure WILL) interfere in all that and just whacks our planet with something so hard, all these unethical toys wlll simply be wiped out. And we start from scratch. That's what I think is gonna happen.

There are places where the cancer rate is higher because of the nuclear bombs dropped. It's in the region of Semej in Kazakhstan. Over 450 atomic bombs where detonated during the cold war on the Semipalatinsk test, which makes it the most nuclear-bombed place on earth
Estimates from Kazakhstan experts suggest 1.5 million people were exposed to fallout at this site over the duration of around 40 years. Horrific.
The type of geiger counter you are using is incapable of detecting the radiation in food or radioluminescent exit signs. At a minimum you should be using a detector with a mica window to allow the alpha and lower energy beta rays through. Ideally it would be the 2" pancake probe type, and have a timed count function so you can make statistically significant measurments. The unit you have should be fine for measuring background gamma radiation, but you still need to average the counts over time for the readings to carry any value as a measurment, unless the measured value is significantly above background levels.
Bananas?! Mightn't it be better to not know? Thanks for posting!
@@tamcon72 😂 but it's for science!
Never knew everyday things could technically be radioactive! Forever learning things
Loving the updated production quality!!
Thank you! The green screen is working over time ;)
Feedback on these videos are very welcome, especially as I'm working hard on improving the overall production quality. Whatcha think?
Congrats on the grant! The quality is fine!
@@tamcon72 thanks!
Oh nice! I really like to give feedback on up and coming RUclipsrs! I was surprised to see that you haven't got that many followers, which really speaks highly of your production quality! It would be nice to have some visual comparison between the things you measured instead of just getting a lot of numbers which can be hard to keep in your head. I also wanted to see what a radioactive smoke alarm puts out! The connection between sieverts and becquerel units would be nice too, and maybe a bit more thorough info of sieverts in the beginning of the video! At one point it looked like you read from a screen that was quite a bit below the camera, maybe try and have the manuscript closer to the camera? The spaceship looking background was fine but when it moved it did it too fast in my opinion, it should be very subtle. Uranium glass would also be cool to see, and maybe more things that are made with radioactive materials, like some clocks and whatever else. Anyway I hope this comment doesn't come across as too negative because that is not my intention! Looking forward to follow your growth! Cheers
@@lerikhkl Thank you, this is all really great and helpful! I appreciate it, and it didn't come across as too negative :)
That is pretty cool

Yeah, you do suck tbh. Dw, I suck too. But it's bigger than you and I. This world sucks on a net level and should get wiped out completely

I'm just wondering when the gaming channel will start back up
I may make some more videos using space related games at some point!
This was fascinating. That refining this substance has the same problem as bitcoining--energy hogging--was distressing.
What a delightful observation! I have noted this sinking, but not made the connection, although I knew it reminded me of something in "nature." Thanks for posting!

A thoroughly interesting discussion, thank you! I’m currently reading Kurzweil’s recent book ‘The Singularity is Nearer’, related to this technology. I wonder whether he’ll touch on the ethical/moral impacts.
Thanks! I know Ray has predicted that AI will reach human-level intelligence and general intelligence by 2029. Not long now until we see whether he's right... I'm curious to know their thoughts on whether AI will be overall good or bad for the world.

British English is verbose. When newspapers were printed on paper, the London papers were thicker, yet conveyed less information than their American countetparts.
Is the extra I really world changing object. Wars were created over less. This makes science look retarded and why we have climate scientists changing real data to make the fake political story to get people scared for no reason. Lame!
America is not the only country to spell it Aluminum; I learned this during my Minecraft 1.7.10 days, due to how many Mods were struggling with cross-mod compatibility with Ore Doubling and Refinement recipes, along with the resulting ingot usage in crafting recipes.
actually interesting and educational, hell yeah
Do you think about the energy that goes into each aluminium can when you see one like me or are you normal?
I think acknowledging the processes that bring you anything IS normal. Indigenous cultures understand the connections and costs and strive to live in balance! Capitalism has divorced us from these concepts 👀
What happened to the 25% that's not still in use today?
Most of it would go to landfill somewhere.
@@spacescienceguyYes that much I figured, either that or in lakes and oceans. But do you happen to have a source for the breakdown of that 25%? I'd be curious to know how each sector or industry has contributed to it, what percentage is consumer-side, etc.
Why do you ask or care what economists think? Economists know nothing about the real physical world. Real scientists, engineers and mathematicians know the economy cannot grow forever and they have known this since forever.
The Buddha said that either everything is sentient or nothing is sentient, both are true.🙏
you are cute!
Hi there, is there any theories as to why the water fell to approx 11~KM beneath the surface? Is there a different layer or composition of soil at that depths which makes the water settle / stay in place?
Excellent question! This paper didn't really try to answer how the water might have gotten there, but one possible explanation is that the water just reached that depth through typical groundwater processes, which would imply that the rock above it was permeable enough for the water to reach there. As for why it's there specifically and not deeper, maybe the rock beneath that point just isn't permeable enough. On Earth, water can get very deep through plate tectonics dragging the water down along with the rock over very long timescales. Mars doesn't seem to have plate tectonics, so we can probably rule that option out.
I enjoyed this conversation more than I thought I would, as someone very ambivalent about this topic. I appreciated the discussion about applying this tech as a viable replacement for clinical animal testing, especially. Thanks for posting!
That's great to hear! And my pleasure 🙂
I follow a couple of Twitter accounts that post footage of rovers and news like this, and saw the rather sensationalized news of this. I'm glad you went into depth to explain this [potential] finding. Thanks for posting!
For sure! It's easy to sensationalise discoveries relating to space and click bait because it can sound so exciting, but I think the discoveries are interesting enough without it.
Hectic backgrounds dood
😎
How are you finding my most recent videos? I've been working hard to increase the production quality, including a new microphone, green screen, and other accessories. I hope you're enjoying them!
The answer is No... only conscious living organisms i.e. animals, humans even plants feel emotions because they possess a soul.
How do you measure a soul?
Loved this conversation, thank you for sharing! Really insightful and thought-provoking 😊
@@TheSittingDuck99 glad you enjoyed it!
What do you think about synthetic biological intelligence? Has this video changed your views in any way?
I wonder what his views on embodiment are?
@@louisburke8927 Emodiment was on my list of potential questions but unfortunately didn't quite make the cut. You might find this paper interesting though: www.cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S0896-6273(22)00806-6 Particularly: "We have emphasized the requirement for embodiment in neural systems for goal-directed learning to occur". When they tested their first system, Dishbrain, with Pong they argued that it was effectively 'embodied' in the virtual game. Embodiment in this case seems to be a closed feedback loop where the neural culture receives feedback on the causal effects of its actions in the environment.
