  • I finished my PhD in March, but I overall had a not great time and wouldn't recommend doing one. Here I talk about my experience and some of the pros and cons of a PhD.
I recently also made a video highlighting some of the key scientific insights from my space science PhD:
    • There's Something Weir...
The research on rates of depression and anxiety I referred to is available here: www.nature.com...
If you would like to support my videos and encourage me to make more, one way you can do that is to 'Buy Me A Coffee'. You can make small, once off donations here:

For the foreseeable future, this money will go towards buying new equipment for the channel like a better camera and a greenscreen.
My name is Michael Dello-Iacovo. I have a PhD in space science, am a Strategy Lead & Researcher at Sentience Institute, and am a competitive climber. I volunteer with the Animal Justice Party (currently Deputy Convener of NSW branch) and have run in a number of elections (currently candidate for Grayndler in the Australian Federal Election).

I'm very interested to hear from people who have done or are doing a PhD, regardless of whether your experience tracked with mine or not. Please feel free to share your thoughts!

Thanks for this info. Was helpful, some of it I already knew but it's nice to get info on others experiences in order to help me make a decision of if I should go down the path of phd.

Well done! I have just gotten degrees/certifications as warranted, and focused on getting as broad an education as possible, so this was interesting to hear about. Academia is kind of a racket, as you note, but you worked very hard for this achievement, and overcame significant hurdles to do so. Such an experience is beneficial, even if not in an immediately apparent way. Thanks for posting : )

I see many people with higher degrees who are struggling years later to pay off debt and make their lives worth those years of blood, sweat, and tears.

I'm thankful that student debt in Australia is interest free with the government, and that my PhD didn't cost anything, but I feel for people in other countries who experience crippling debt.

I get what you say about people thinking you're smart at everything because you have a phd, I think there is some truth to it though as you would expect someone who has done a phd to be a good critical thinker and able to understand, retain information and be able to use it. These are traits I don't think everyone has, or they at least don't value it and exercise these parts of their brains so they aren't as good at it. Anyway just my 2 cents on that.

Fair enough! There is probably some truth in that, but I do think that PhDs get far more credit than they are due.

Hi, Micheal Dello-lacovo I know this video is a little old so you might not see this comment. I'm doing a bachelor's in computer science and considering doing a PhD in machine learning. I was wondering if I could get your opinion on if I should do a PhD or not. Although I'm a first-year so I haven't taken any classes in ai yet I think it seems really cool and I do generally enjoy the programing class I'm currently doing.
Part of the reason why I'm considering doing a Ph.D. instead of just a master's (a master's is kind of needed to become a machine learning engineer) is that if one day an ai becomes sentient (i know it's a bit far-fetched) people might take me more seriously when I talk about how they deserve rights or how people shouldn't consider there interests less because they are an ai. Idk if this is a good reason or not, especially since getting a Ph.D. is so hard and a lot mentally. Also, what's it like working at the sentience institute?
Thanks for taking time out of your day to answer this question.

Hi, thanks for the question! It's great that you're thinking about what to do after your degree already. Regarding AI sentience I will just say that given what we do at Sentience Institute, so I don't think it's *that* far fetched!
It's definitely true that people who do PhD's have more authority and credibility when speaking about their field of expertise. They even seem to have some extra credibility when talking about not their field of expertise (which I find amusing but also strange). If one can take advantage of this for a good cause, I think they should. So I think that is a perfectly reasonable reason to do a PhD. I guess you have to decide for yourself whether this benefit and any other benefits outweigh the costs for you.
Working at SI is good! It has been challenging moving into a new field of research. I feel like I'm still catching up on literature like artificial intelligence and consciousness, but I like learning new things so it has been good.

@@spacescienceguy So when you say looking at the literature in artificial intelligence and consciousness do you mean like looking into the philosophy of mind and getting a general idea of how ai works, if you don't mind me asking. Also, what are you guys doing at the SI currently?
Also is it true that Ph.D. students can go overseas for free (for stuff that's related to their studies)?
Thanks for taking time out of your day to read this.
