Dyeing yarn with PLANTS THE SUN | the BIG REVEAL! | join me on a solar dyeing adventure, Part 2...
I've been getting really into natural dyeing for the last 6 months or so and was able to get a nice medium blue with green undertones using Buckthorn berry skins at a 1:1 WOF in an acidic bath (4-5pH). You can get more of a sky blue with exhaust baths or smaller ratio. It is truly a labor of love though because you have to squeeze out all of the insides of the berries, give the skins a quick rinse, then weigh and do a stovetop extraction. It's a fun color but is probably not a color I would ever do for a sweater quantity just because of the labor involved. The stuff you squeeze out from the berries makes a really nice and bright green apple green so that's worth keeping and using too.
Fascinating!!!
Very much looking forward to crocheting this! Trying to work down a large yarn stash!🧶 Discovered you through Ali's “Little Drops of Wonderful.” 🥰 So glad to hear your thoughts about CROCHET! I’m a learning knitter, but Crochet is my comfort zone. I have felt that Crochet is “the poor step-sister” to knitting. Before I learned to knit, I was the only crocheter in a local knitting group….😋
It definitely can feel like that sometimes! I do both, but I so dislike the stigma around crochet. All the yarn is for everybody & and all the fiber arts are ART!
It's gorgeous!! Love your design
Thank you!!!
Where is the tutorial talk to much
Not a tutorial 👌
Too much talking! 😕
your comments about your voice had me rolling. i can speed my videos up to 2x and my voice sounds normal. im a slow talker. 🤣🤣🤣
🤣😂
Forgotten lore does not match the pattern , its a bat wing / dragon wing
Aren’t you suppose to pick up the third loop also on each pass?
Sooo I thought this channel was about yarn and fiber fun. Not about bashing people and their morals. There should be less negativity in this world, not more.
Good instructions, soothing voice
Thomas Ronald Thomas Helen Garcia Sarah
That's quite the name!
can I talk with you as a RUclips SEO expert?
Mam , Can I talk with you as a RUclips SEO expert?
No, as I am an expert in spotting nonsense, you most assuredly cannot.
@@fiberandfox how do you know thay, i can't do it.
Your fabric on your dress is also a type of double gauze, but it's bubble gauze because when you wash it and let it dry, it has a bubbly texture, whereas some double gauze, such as Japanese double gauze can be perfectly flat.
I'm still so confused, who thought of these tongue twister names!? But thank you. Gathering bits of information one item at a time!
Love that you're sticking it to the fashion man - right on sister. 😊 Digging the sewing content, and have to say that I personally enjoy the longer vids to watch while I'm doing my own crafty stuff. Thanks for doing your thing. Appreciated. ☮️🧡🧶
Well thank YOU for being here for it! 😊
I consider myself a yarn-rescuer. Oh, how I love saving yarn. I guess you are showing signs of inheriting this gene.😂 I love my bags and love your creativity! Xoxo❤
It's a dangerous game 😝
@fiberandfox Nope, Love to save all the yarn. Lol, I am sure you will inherit some of it. I just need to love me some abandoned yarn. 🤪 I need to knit faster!
I used to enjoy your videos, but I can't subscribe to someone who has a problem with Taylor Swift. I'm not a swifty, but I can't see anything about her that would make me so upset as to call myself the opposite of a swifty, or justify someone else.
Fun episode. Proud of you. I think you should smock the white handmade choir robe pheasant top. My flowers are up for grabs. I know a little girl who loves to pick them. ❤ Pickle pants are a very big yes!😂
That would be...quite the top.
Also...a choir of PHEASANTS would be something as well
16:58 I love your pickle pants! 100% would wear. ❤
No recommendations on how anyone else can get such pants, but do believe everyone should 😂
I am totally here for the pickle pants!
They're terribly comfortable. I think everyone will be wearing them in the future. 👌
I can confirm that hydrangeas are a pH sensitive flower and acid makes pink. Also, pretty sure your marigold + iron really is marigold. The green looks like what I'm familiar seeing with marigold + iron.
How did you not sneeze?😂
I think there was at least one cut I made for sneezing. 😂
@@fiberandfox upload the sneezes in blooper video😅❤️
Maker Math!! I luge that! Lovely tank top! Good luck with the sewing!! You’re doing great!!
😂💕
Ive been wondering about that patons linen. You'll have to let ne know how yiure liking it!
So far so good...shall see how it wears I guess?
I think the Dandelion stitch is PERFECT for a vertical top (side to side) creation!! I’m here for the tank pattern release! Re stripes: you could have 3 stripes on each sleeve (bicep area on one, lower arm on other) and/or lower body stripes (3 to match…or not)! Stripes, for some reason, seem to make knitting work up faster…hmm Your sewing is great! Only you can see the “oopsies”. Math-ing is everywhere, and I love playing with math. My problem is trying to create (using knitting) a 3-D vision in my head & then mapping out onto paper (2-D). Pre-internet, pre-RUclips… I did a lot of library research, and called on friends who had kids in high school for their math/geometry/ knowledge! Thanks for another peek at my new fave: Dandelion stitch! Underarm shaping is (or can be) a challenge, especially for a tighter fitting garment. Can’t wait for a tank pattern❤️❤️!!
👏💕
Mine is still not working
Is it a knitpicks? I've heard they are great with the customer service on these!
Oh, I thought 1. This was a tutorial 2. Cosplay ish wings/cape, not a scarf thing
Its great to be original and creative. I knit & crochet. I prefer knitting because it's finer and uses less yarn. I learned much from patterns & zoom courses to make a few cardigans and tops. Enough to go further on any Ravelry knit. I used to sew and learned from mom as well in school. That was last done 30 years ago! I recently gave my girl my machine and bought a new one for myself. I joined as well a sewing course that teaches pattern making and styling as well before the sewing steps. I am on my 3rd class of 14. I highly recommend investing in something you love to do. And learn & frog till you understand it. It takes time and experience. Goodluck. It is Fun.
I would definitely like to seek out some classes in the near future!
You're a trip girl. Glad you're back. ✌️❤🧶
Ha I'll keep the nonsense coming 😂
Just cut your daughter some PJ pants from the fabric in the dysfunctional pants. The PJ pants are fine! Nice work! Keep going!! Sorry the crochet designing is so frustrating right now. Hope some patience and motivation come your way!! Take a breath and take care!
Dysfunctional indeed 😂 I'm pondering long and hard on how to salvage them for me but that may definitely be an option!
Thank you! Do you have a tutorial for your beautiful scarf?
You betcha! The one I am wearing is multiple colors and made of scraps but this is the pattern for it! fiberandfox.com/blog/free-beginner-crochet-granny-triangle-scarf-pattern
Hear you! In the past, I made a thing (knit) that could only be tried on when shaping etc was complete. Frogged many times, adding adjustments… No. More. I’ll make a top or sweater w a true pattern, modifying after to suit. Can’t help you with sewing. Perhaps a nearby fabric shop has classes? I really like the tank tops! I plan on knitting a top/camisole or two (well… have yarn + pattern ready…) My problem: I’m mentally modifying the pattern BEFORE I’ve made the thing. Sheesh! Because fingering weight, bottom up (so no trying on til done, boo-hoo), and maybe I’ll crochet a top, much faster! But, that gauge & size bit … sigh Keep trying allll the things that make you happy! Eventually you’ll get the sewing figured out! I bounce between knit and crochet when those frustrating “oopsies” or “ugh” fit issues crop up. Knit issue? Crochet a tote or basket. Anywho, good luck & be sure to have fun!
There are definitely more easy to try on and modify constructions, but sometimes a special stitch calls for a special amount of...pain in the butt in the making 🤷😂🤦
6:39 I love the no pattern/no design coming projects ❤ I’m in a similar stage as well, just making simple things for enjoyment.
If you keep watching, its a lot more enjoyable if I make them right 😂😂
Citric acid and vinegar are not mordants. They are binders which change the pH of the water (more acidic) to help the colour bind to the yarn / fabric. But this effect doesn't last, so the colour will wash out or fade pretty quickly. Real mordants assist the dye to chemically bind to the yarn/fabric. Also, you should always keep jars, pots or utensils used for dyeing separate to those you use for food. You talked about safety and then used hydrangea which is toxic!
You're not wrong! I've learned a lot since this video 2 years ago and am always learning more.
PJs. Kitties. Yarn. Yup! I watch whenever you post! Had to laugh re counting… yes, I too forget how to count. And I mean between 2 and 15. Sheesh. I’m working on a picot bind off (shawl)… CO 2, BO 4. No audiobooks or vids, until I finish. Which is okay, cuz I ALWAYS have ends to weave in (socks-lots of), always have easy-peasy pick up whenever project (which includes more socks)… Flower Fields… love those bright happy colors in the shawl! Now I want that exact color scheme! Surely there’s something in stash, right?? maybe? Baby bootees are such fun! I made up my own (garter) pattern years ago & keep in a ziploc bag. Handy when I see/meet a wee little one! Thanks for a few giggles, inspiration, and kitty!
Yay! Glad you are here for all the cat, crochet & (c)knit chaos content! 👏
Having the hardest time catching up with podcasts, mom life lol. I’m so excited about the upcoming design with that beautiful yarn! I recently treated myself to the Knitter’s Pride Sweet Affair needle set. It also comes with a full skein of yarn and 3 minis, I couldn’t figure out what I wanted the main yarn to be but I think this shawl pattern might be it. It’s mainly green yarn with pink, white and blue. I hope it’ll give the same meadow vibes that your yarn does! I’m crying at the diaper changing chicken! That’s hilarious
Glad you found our chicken comical. Same 😂😂 and girl, I'm having the hardest time RECORDING podcasts, so take your time 😉
Your entertainingly funny and honest, I’m new to knitting socks so I’m enjoying listening to your sock journey. I’m from Garstang U.K. and impressed you have West Yorkshire Spinners yarn over there 🧶💕
Thank you! And it's not something that's easy to come by but there are a few yarn shops that stock some of it!
Thank you for the information on the Staple Linen Top!
Definitely still a staple in my wardrobe!
Bella, I love you. This fixed my winder ❤
Haha high praise. Glad to help!
I bought your cute scarf pattern but I haven’t gotten started yet. Excited to make it bright spring colors!
Thank you!! Excited for you to make it too 👏👏
This video has provided me with much-needed clarity. I'm thankful for the wisdom imparted in this video. What inspired the theme of using natural dyes to create rainbows in your podcast episode, and how do you incorporate this theme into your crochet and knitting projects? As someone who runs a dream interpretation channel, how can the colors and symbolism of rainbows in crafting be interpreted in dreams? I appreciate the creativity and unique content of your podcast, and I've liked and subscribed for more inspiring episodes.
Yesss! Meadow, field of flowers, Summer… ahhh! When I’m actually looking for short color lengths, nope! And vice versa! Which (of course) leads to More. Yarn. Funny Chicken/Not Chicken story! Kids will play w the thing, no matter! Their imaginations will work just fine, whatever the critter looks like! Also, fun to make !!
Glad you're here for it 👏 and for the record, he LOVES that wonky chickenduckapus
I think the variegated yarn is awesome with the dandelion stitch!!
I thought it would be too much but turns out it's just the right amount of MUCH 👏😂
Ty so much!! This is the best tutorial for this stitch
Thank you for saying so!
This yarn and the dandelion stitch are just perfect 😍
Right??! It shouldn't work but IT DOESSS
Thank you! This is the first time and I was unable to get the second screw to budge at all. I was able to force the larger gear plate back into place though. Again, thank you so much!!!
Glad to help!
the bottom screw on mine isnt budging any advice?!?!? i have the exact same winder and no matter what i do it wont loosen
You definitely reach out to knit picks! I've heard they are good about replacing them!
