The Perfect Camera For Video Orientated Content!!! - #panasonicgh5s
For content creators, the tools you use can define the quality, mood, and impact of your work. The Panasonic GH5S is one of those rare cameras that doesn’t just meet expectations but redefines them, offering a powerhouse of video capabilities that make it a favourite for filmmakers, vloggers, and content creators alike.
At the heart of the GH5S is its focus on video performance. Its 10.2-megapixel sensor might seem modest on paper compared to other cameras, but it’s a deliberate choice. This lower resolution enhances the sensor's ability to perform in low light, a crucial feature for creators working in varied or challenging environments. Shooting in dimly lit spaces, capturing nightlife, ...

I would add replacing the LCD EVF with a larger OLED EVF (which the GX8 had). That's my major gripe about my GX85, and probably why I haven't upgraded to the GX9.

Fujifilm digital cameras was a mediocre systems until their marketing department had a brilliant idea to switch to retro vintage design and add filmlike profiles with tone of tweaking. The other companies didn't steal the same idea, still wondering why. Like Panasonic, all other cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony has basic profile tweaking with no film emulations.

Hi Grant, fully agree with your wish list for the 'GX9 mk ii' - although I'm not holding my breath!. Should Panasonic ever deem to produce an updated model for its MFT customers, it would be helpful to also ensure that its minimum operating temperature matched that of many other cameras, i.e. minus 10 degrees Celsius, rather than zero degrees Celsius. I was out on the UK east coast the other night doing some street photography with my GX9 and it crashed because the ambient temperature dropped to around freezing. (Yep, I should have read the camera's spec before I went out 😒). Unfortunately, replacing the battery for a fully charged one taken from a warm pocket didn't resolve the problem. Taking it and myself into a warm pub brought the camera (and me) back to life. I imagine it's a problem that you guys in Oz are unlikely to encounter!

Grant! Check out DSLR Video Shooter's videos, where he deep dives into it. He made a video showing the FOV differences and your 12-60 would be perfect for a locked off tripod shot at the back of a wedding or an interview. It doesnt have PDF if that's a serious issue, but the autofocus is like the GH5 and if you are at f/4 (because you can afford to shoot at f/4 without noise now) you have a deep depth of field to lock it in manual focus too. Also check out Filmmaker IQ's explanation of dual native ISO where he discusses the BMPCC4K! Wish I could send you my GH5S to borrow since I think GH5/GH5S cameras are peak value!

The GH5-II is a mystery and I still don't know why it came out. It was announced together with the GH6 and came out a couple of month earlier. Panasonic never published a list of all the features that where improved, so I made my own by watching camera revues. Everybody who tested the camera found different things and I'm still not sure if my list is complete. Here we go: - 4k60p 10bit 4:2:0 h265, UHD and C4K - better Display, same as S5 - viewfinder with 120fps - IBIS improved from 5 to 6.5 stops. - new menu system from the latest cameras - better, faster AF - animal detection, better face recognition - Single AF in VFR-mode before recording - several new colour profiles (CineD2, CindV2), VLog-L installed - more DR (1/3 stop) and less sensor flare thru a special coating - one more custom profile on the top wheel (C1-C4) - 13 custom profiles instead of 5 (C4-1 up to C4-10) - improved reset rules for changes to a custom profile - named custom profiles - Load custom Profile (copy Cxx into the normal mode) - red display frame when recording - several new live streaming options - linear manual focus by wire - larger battery, old battery can be used - external USB charging, external USB power - Waveform monitor is re-sizeable - Vector scope shows up when manual white balance is done - Luminance Spot Meter - microphone pre-amp can go to -18 instead of -12 - better anamorphic support with new IBIS-settings and guide lines - ISO values shown while recording video in Auto-ISO - sheer Overlay

  • @Ulrich.Bierwisch

I don't see the GH5s as a content-creator cam but more as a film maker camera. The multi-aspect sensor doesn't deliver open gate, it has only advantages if you switch to 16:9 or 17:9. The normal 4:3 sensor cuts pixel on top and the button away in this case while the multi aspect sensor cuts less pixels away and adds some to the left and right so the 16:9 and 17:9 area is larger (around 10% if I remember this correctly). The lower pixel count allows to read more dynamic range from the sensor (stills have 14bit in RAW) but if you use natural for video, this additional DR isn't going into the 10bit codec. It needs the Log-codec to compress the DR into the video file so you can make use of it in post. In order to avoid moire and other aliasing effects, the camera has an AA-filter so the 4k from the 1:1 sensor readout is less sharp than the 4k from the GH5 with oversampling. This is helping to get a more cinematic result. The GH5s shines on the tripod or gimbal with lenses like the Sigma 18-35 and a speedbooster or the PL 10-25/1.7.

I look back at what I paid originally for my MFT Gear, I can’t say I saved a ton.. it was all expensive at the moment of purchase because it was the new thing out. MFT is simply a “Vibe” that is hard to walk away from.

I've been and still use my GH5s for video. Can't say anything bad about it. After I purchased my S5 last year, it became my B cam that I just leave paired with the Leica 12-60 on my gimbal. Even without a gimbal, that's a very stable setup. For any production, it will still be a powerhouse going into 2025. It can be a really nice minimal setup, but one can rig it up if necessary. I will say that the battery life on the GH5s is amazing. Depending on the condition of your battery, it will record almost 2 hours before the battery dies (@4K 8bit 24p in this case). The sensor size is also a bit special on the GH5s and it is ever so slightly bigger than all the other MFT cameras I've used. When paired with a .64 Metabones speedbooster and full frame glass, the image crop ends up feeling somewhere between full frame and super35. It will actually show the image circle in the corners if you are using wide APS-C glass. It is also definitely great at low light. It uses a two-stage gain sensor, and it does have nice clean images at the higher ISO stage (800/5000 if you shoot V-LOG, 400/2500 for other profiles). Just make sure you expose properly. So many people unknowingly underexpose then complain about the noise in their shadows. Regarding photos, I've only used it occassionally for personal family outings and it does great.

Thanks Grant for bringing this to light. I've seen some used low use GH5s cameras pretty cheap here in America but didn't realize it had other video enhancements and the larger multi-aspect sensor. Larger sensors usually have more rolling shutter so the the GH5s may be better in that regard over full-frame video cameras. Interesting the GH5s has a slightly larger sensor similar to the GH1 and GH2. I used a Hacked versions of the GH1 and GH2 for professional video work and the colors were remarkable, cinematic and film-like and with the hack you could shoot anamorphic with the full sensor. I sold them to a filmmaker when I upgraded to the Black-magic 4k Production cameras and he still uses the Hacked GH2's today when he wants vintage film-like look. While I like the look of Full-frame 35mm video, especially with vintage lenses, for a guy who used to shoot super 16 film, Betacam and Vaircam 2/3" sensors, Micro Four Thirds to me is the sweet spot sensor size for run-n-gun journalistic, news-gathering, as it makes for an affordable small kit, and the MFT sensor size gives similar look to 35mm movie film and the deep-focus look of video, so it can fit in either scenario. I do like the look of full-frame 35mm video for subject isolation, but the lenses are huge, heavy and sometimes it's too shallow focus for most movie looks. I'd like to try a GH5s to see if it has the cinematic rendering of GH1 and GH2. I'm loving the G9 Mk1 but Video look is sort of 'blah' 'digitalish' and hard to grade for an organic, film look or for pop. I much prefer the way the LX100 and GX8 rendered 8-bit 4k colors straight out of camera, so if the GH5s has improved image rendering, more like a cinema camera that could be a huge plus. If you're delving more in video and creative looks Grant, I'd highly encourage considering a proper cinema camera as well, and if I were getting back into creative film-making, I'd like to give the Gh5s a try but currently I'd be more inclined to opt for proper cine cameras with Raw or ProrRes HQ recording. While it can be a bit more time-consuming to grade and edit, the end result I got was always better than what I got with consumer 8 and 10-bit cameras.

@@grantrobertdavies Maybe, if video and low light are the the main needs the GH5s is the better option. I've not used the GH6 on a serious shoot and never touched a GH5s. The Panasonic's are more than adequate for what most video needs, but I always missed the look of the old Blackmagic RAW cameras and the Sony CineAlta cameras. Using the G9-Mk1 at first seemed like a huge step-up in video capabilities, but after a few semi-serious shoots last fall and summer it was a bit of a let down. Some scenes looked good, but other scenes were kind of mucky and dull and there was just not enough there to grade it to what I would have expected to get from a Blackmagic or CineAlta I know would have graded out and looked lovely. And that's why on client work, even for run-n-Gun news or interview work I'd lug the old BlackMagic 2.5k Cinema camera or the original Pocket Cinema camera and shoot raw, as with 13 to 14 stops of dynamic range, I could compensate for bad light, strong backlight and recover faces, where in the same situation the Sony A7RII, or Panasonic GH3 or GH4 would have been unusable. I used Blackmagic URSAs a but I never got the good point and shoot results of the original Black magic Cinema cameras. I did love the motion of the old Blackmagic Production Camera 4k with the global shutter and being able to shoot raw, and now with SSD being cheap, if I were doing client work again I'd likely go back to a Blackmagic production 4k Camera for a lot of jobs. Perhaps the GH5s might preform more like a cine camera, you've sparked my interest and if I run across a deal I might grab one to try out.

Panasonic seems to be completely done with compact/street style cameras except for the sad G100. So unless the next G camera gets substantially smaller I’ll never own Panasonic again. As much as I really enjoy my EM5 mark 3 and OM5 the next OM5 really needs to be something special with their new sensor. I’ve been tempted to get the OM1 but I just don’t want the bigger cameras for m4/3. I just want the faster handheld high resolution mode that takes 5 seconds instead of 15 seconds on my OM5. But some good deals on the OMS website for the EM1 Mark 3 and the EM5 Mark 2 with full warranty. NO way would should you go with the G7 over the OM5. The specs beat the G7 in every category easily from image stabilization to auto focus. Well worth the cash.

I've had the G7 for about maybe 7 yrs. The lack of HDMI was always a bummer, but it was a Christmas gift so I can't complain much. Yeah, you can use the Panasonic app but unless you're using a tablet it's useless. It's been a cool little B-roll. Now, as I type this, I don't know why I did not do this sooner, but I grabbed the Viltrox EF-M2 ii adapter to use with my canon, tamron and sigma glass about 2 months ago and BOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY OH BOY.... It is ridiculous. I had been using my Canon 5d2 and 5D3 for videoing weddings, events and games. But man, it has taken my sports videos to a new level. I still may grab a G95 or Gh5, I REALLY want the S52. But I've had other creatives in my IG inbox asking "Bro what the hell are you shooting on? The vid was amazing!" If you've got glass with stabilization, you can still get buttery smooth shots handheld and with a gimbal or 3 point method.

Tamron 17-70 is a great lens, what you think ? You bought it ? I couldn't resist and bought a GX 8 today for EUR 375. The 30mm 2.8 Macro and the Panasonic 14-42 were also included in the offer. However, with 50,000 releases. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything about the durability of the closure

Brilliant and useful points and tips Grant, and surprisingly not a topic that's well covered or explained. Interesting you mention 10,000hrs. as that's what my dad and others in Hollywood used to say it took to become a secure professional in the film and broadcast industry. However with your tips, I'd say with your guideline and some constructive humblness and self-observation, most can be proficient and presentable in as little as a couple of dozen hours. Developing an interview style and conducting interviews is valuable as well, and once you become adept in resonating with others and inspiring them to open up and share their passions, experiences and insights, one can become become inspired to in a way interview one's self.

I love my Pen F. People moan about 4/3rds and things that annoy them about cameras. They haven't used film cameras with manual everything. Man, they'd be lost if they had to shoot film. LOL! I grew up with film cameras. I lived in a great era of film. At 63 years old, my preference is for small cameras too. I have tried them all in film and digital. And I still use film. I have the 45mm, and the 17mm lens. So awesome. The 17mm is the daily.

I've got this camera brand new when it was introduced but I think the smal viewfinder is a pain. If they made an evf equal to the evf on the GX8, bright and big, it would be a perfect camera. I got the GX8 secondhand and I love it ! Thinking of selling the GX85.

Another great video...And I had just sold all my (m43) gear over the last month ...go figure...I was gonna buy a used Sony a7c...but..instead...I.just bought another black Pen-f. set..($750 US). 8000 shutter)...and with lens..flash...batteries...extra optical viewfinder.. course I live in Bangkok ...Here.. the facebook market usually has 2 or 3 for sale at any one time...I just could not pass it up...Plus... I like some of the m43 lenses over the full frame Sony stuff anyway....The Olympus 40-150 /2.8 pro plus 1.4 TX comes to mind...Cheers
