The value from MFT is now amazing (if you're willing to use kit that's a bit behind the leading edge). I recently picked up a mint E-M1X for sports and wildlife - I never thought I'd be so impressed by a "large" MFT camera but the performance and handling (particularly with longer lenses) is fantastic. I also use other systems (Fuji, Leica, Sigma, Canon M) so I'm not blinkered to the advantages/disadvantages of the MFT systems.
Over the years, Olympus was dumping last years model for less than half price three times, while I kept an eye out for sales, the first catch being a PEN E-PL2. Despite of the IQ being a little noisier than my Pentax Kx, I immediately liked it. I pounced twice more, scoring a PL6 and a PL8, which are both equal to or better in IQ, noise, resolution than early Canon full frame 5D up to the Mk2. All three bodies were a USD 300 catch, and I never used my Pentax again. The 14-42mm kit lens is nice, the 40-150mm f/3.5 to f/5.6 is a recommended best lens buy, and the Sigma DN and DN-ART series 19mm, 30mm, and 60mm all at f/2.8 were cherries and each was USD 150 or less. These cams and lenses were all brand new, and now cost more used! I am very happy I have them!
Two more pros, 1. Greater depth of field. For some applications this is a con, but for many it's a pro, especially macro work. 2. at least from the OM/Olympus side - awesome weatherproofing. I don't know if anyone in any other format could manage it. Agreed with all your points. It seems there is a fiercely loyal MFT subgroup, It'd be awesome if OM or Pany would release a new, mid-tier tiny camera body - with a viewfinder.
Sold!! I’ve been investigating options for a small all day carry camera system for my trip to Japan next year. Was after a PEN F but too expensive for its age. Your positivity on the GX 9 and views of others, like Hugh from 3 blind men and an elephant, convinced me. GX9 with 15mm Leica is in the mail. I’ll enjoy more of your vids once I get my hands on it
Came back to photography this year, initially with APS-C (Fuji), but jumped ship to an OM-1.2 a few months later. I just love it, so I’m here to stay. The compact nature of all the kit is what really appeals, plus the weather sealing. Recently came back from a city break to Stockholm and all I took was the OM1 plus the 12-40 f2.8. Less than a kilo dangling from my PD capture clip that covers everything from street to portraits of my kids, and stays out even when it’s pouring with rain. Suits me perfectly.
Of course I'm in. My concert photography kit is completely based on MFT, and that's not going to change - only potentially get upgraded with an Olympus E-M1 iii or better (though that might have to wait since I'm saving up for the many costs related to moving from an apartment to a small house with a garden). The Sony A6600 does sound like a good idea though. I use a Sony NEX 6 myself and really appreciate the compact size and APS-C sized sensor in that kit - and all the great lens options out there for Sony E/FE.
Another great video! ...I change gear often..but now days I Use an Olympus EPL9...with ...a set of cheap lenses...kit 14-42...Lumix 14/2.5...Olympus body cap fisheye... Olympus 40-150/4-5.6 R ( amazingly sharp for a kit tele zoom) but ...Its small and ...It all fits in my old walkabout vest pockets... I like the ART settings for JPEG on the EPL9 ...I actually have two bodies for street here in Bangkok...( I have had one or more Pens since they first came out)... I started with the EPL1 and the EP1...Cheers
Well summarized Grant, I very much agree with your take as someone who jumped into 4/3" cameras with original Olympus E-Volt SLR 4/3" cameras. I've been into photography for over 40 years now, and preferred Medium format for film photography but with Digital photography has been my go to for most of the casual digital I do. For some professional and creative pursuits, I believe Full-Frame Digital cameras do offer some aesthetic advantages, but I've not used a full-frame Digital camera that checks all the boxes of MFT. Having owned and used a Fuji GFX briefly, price no object, my first choice would be a Medium format GFX and Micro Four Thirds systems.
Can only second the M43 approach, the love and the 'forecast'. This is not going anywhere in any! foreseeable future. At my longitudes and latitudes there is a lot of buzz around OM System and in particular OM-1 Mark II and the M.Zuiko [Pro] lenses. Have it and love it.
I've done my part to tell Panasonic that m43 is alive - bought 5 new DG Leica lenses this year. The tiny G100D and 9mm kicked off my re-investment in m43 - a great little travel stills / B camera; the E-IS does a valiant job for the occasional video, but I do want a variant of this with real IBIS like my old GX80.
Update with my g80 that i got from your recommendations. Omg im in love with this camera. I use it for stills . The 12-60mm kit lens is amazingly sharp and colours are brilliant . Done my first function few weeks ago and everyone loved the photos
See you in the new year I hope. I am probably going with an a6700 and the Tamron also, along with a tiny street prime. Tired of waiting on a similar new body from either lumix or oly. But I'll still use OM 90mm macro for some time.
I'm still waiting for a new GX. I'm in love with my GX80/85, but I bought a used G9 for more serious work to replace my G80/85. The new S9 gave me some hopes of a new GX with improved quality, autofocus, 4K 60p and FHD 180p, and also 10bits 422. I give Panasonic a year, if no new decent GX, I'll sell all my M43 gear and go for an S9.
At the start of 2023 I had one M43 camera. At the end of 2024 I have... seven!? How'd that happen? (Oh, trawling ebay for cheaper old models, that's how.) Keeping my big honking OM gear for wildlife, definitely, and I'm keeping an eye out on what's happening with the Lumix GX line, but to be honest... I'm thinking about picking up a Lumix S5i to dip my toe in FF.
had that same white GF1 as my first camera :) sold it a couple months ago myself and got a G85, a very capable camera for $315 + tax on ebay also got my two current lenses from japan (got a 45-200mm f/4-5.6 with the GF1 for like $120, 20mm f/1.7 II for like $80) so a total of barely over $500 spent for an extremely versatile shooting setup only missing ultrawide focal length so i plan to get the LAOWA 6mm f/2, LAOWA and COSINA's Voigtländer have pushed the envelope for the MFT system to have almost no compromise and I'm thankful for their innovations 👏👏 now I just can't wait for someone to release an MFT camera with the global shutter MFT sensor that has 16 stops of dynamic range, that would be insane... Z-Cam almost did it but they abandoned it :/
I bought the Lumix G1, with kit lenses, back in 2008 when it first came out, attracted by the size. Lovely camera, still takes wonderful photos (I still have it and use it). I've stuck with the brand ever since (a couple of Olympus lenses); enough bodies and lenses for every occasion. Regarding size, I did get tempted into a G9 with 14-140. I wouldn't call it small but, wow, it can do everything. I guess I'm here to stay!
MFT all the way. 17MM 1.8 + 45-200MM for travel. 42.5mm 1.7 is also a great travel choice option if you are worried about lower light conditions but still want a telephoto option. For video 12-35mm f2.8 (They literally just released a 3rd version of this lens that is fantastic!) Also a plethora of primes to choose from if you want even more low light capabilities for video or for portable travel use. For wedding or serious business stuff, 17mm f1.2 + 42.5 f1.2. Then of course lenses for other purposes, (Astro, macro, animal) examples, 9mm, 30mm, 100-300/400... (Granted I don't tend to use these) I tried real hard to like that 35-100mm f2.8. It is a great quality lens but I felt like it never quite fit the bill for me. It didn't have a lot of reach (to me), and I always seem to be able to use the 42.5 1.2 for everything it would have done. There are so many other lenses to choose from too in MFT. MFT is just the best.
Tamron 17-70 is a great lens, what you think ? You bought it ? I couldn't resist and bought a GX 8 today for EUR 375. The 30mm 2.8 Macro and the Panasonic 14-42 were also included in the offer. However, with 50,000 releases. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything about the durability of the closure
Hi Grant, there's something special about M43 apart from older or newer cameras. I agree that we all benefit from different kinds of cameras. I own everything from cheap point and shoots and manual SLRs to a Rolleiflex and Nikon Z mirrorless. It's kind of like owning just BMWs or driving ONLY Cadillacs. That choice isn't for anyone. Investors buy cheap and wait it out. That's what I'm trying to do with M43 right now! Looking to buy my 4th M43 camera. Cheers!
Hi Grant...Liverpool Kev again...Greetings from UK....I have recently changed / sold / bought my camera setup...I have the rebought GX9 and the tiny much loved GM1....with 7 micro 4/3rds lenses you will be very familiar with....Here's a coincidence...I recently bought a second hand Sony A6600 which you mentioned...lenses...Kit...16-50 zoom...Sony 20mm pancake...Sigma 1.4 30mm and Yongnuo 11mm 1.8....I have been with micro 4/3rds since the start...love it but so enjoying the Sony setup Grant too...Going to a historic city York at Christmas....Little Gm 1 with 9mmm wideangle and the Sony with maybe just the kit zoom for 'Street'...Thank you so much for your videos Grant...My now late Uncle emigrated to Oz in the 50's...talking to you helps the memories you know...all the best Liverpool Kev
Big fan of my Olympus MFT cameras and lenses. Also still use Nikon DSLR’s D7500 and D4. I just wish OMDS had a bit more to show for this year. An OM-1 mkII and OM-1 firmware are nice, the 150-600 maybe for some. I just hoped to see that 50-200/f2.8 this year.
Hey Grant! Been struggling with overall photography motivation (just the energy draining money bringing job exhausting me) - so happy I have the gx9/20mm1.7 that I still bother bringing - I’m in! ❤
Yeah man... I'm the same!!! I got NO photography Motivation at all OR RUclips Motivation Too!!! LOL... I think it's important not to force things too much as it will all come back :)
This month is terrible in Finland- everything is grey and no colors anywhere when turning to winter but before the snow that may come or not. Probably some B&W practice would be optimal 🤣
Thank you for your excellent promotion of MFT. I still prefer my GX8 for stills and my GX9 for videos. The results are fantastic. The GH6 and the G9 are too big for my purposes. The lenses especially the LEICA ones are very expensive. Low light photography of fast moving objects (a hummingbird for instance at night) is still a problem! But for normal situations the system is very good.
the official photo of the newly elected president of Indonesia is taken using a micro four thirds camera, the new OM1... as an Indonesian, I'd think its the most compelling reason to use MFT in 2025
I took the PEN F (600$) on SH market and I was very supersized about the quality of it. In my opinion is better build than GX9, as the quality of the buttons and how they feel and are placed. I put on an Olympus PRO 25mm f.1.2 (700$) on it and for 3 weeks the GX9 staid home. I have most of prime Leica lens for it [12mm, 15mm, 25mm (love this) and the 42.5mm (this one is incredible)] and i will not sell any of them. I believe that these 2 (PenF + GX9), will be remembered as the old Muscle Cars vs Tesla or other electric cars. Yes, better but ... just a tool. I took them all of them from second hand market and they are in excellent shape. I will never sell any and strongly believe that you will regret selling the PEN F. I have 4 film simulations on the Custom buttons (Koda-Chrome25, Kodak-Porta-160 and Fuji-Velvia and Fuji-Provia) is just incredible fun. Had the chance to take a x100v but, liked the Pen-F more. You will regret it, thrust me.
honestly I'm not sure. I have the G9 OG, and kind of wish I could get better shallow depth of field for portraits. it just seems like I would have an easier time doing this with FF. I know I can get it with a telephoto, but I dont like standing so far back

I'm in, but the manufacturers are not. WE WANT TINY CAMERAS AGAIN!!!
If m4/3 closed shop tomorrow I would probably buy 3 brand new bodies to back up my current 3 bodies. That way I’m good for a couple decades.
The value from MFT is now amazing (if you're willing to use kit that's a bit behind the leading edge). I sold my G9 to make way for my GH6. I quickly bought it again is it’s such a good camera. Having these two is the best of both worlds.
4:35 100% agree with you, M43 has some excellent travel lenses that beat the other system easily. Great video, cheers! 😊😊
Thanks Gary :)

Great video. Lumix for ever, and...for life!
Something is going on, my OMD E-M5 is worth more now than what I paid for it 5 years ago.
Trading in a pen f for a a6600 feels like willingly trading your soul for peanuts
ok 👌🏼
I suspect 2025 will be the last year of m43 production for one manufacturer.
Thank you for your excellent promotion of MFT. I still prefer my GX8 for stills and my GX9 for videos. The results are fantastic. The GH6 and the G9 are too big for my purposes. I was planning to stay MFT but with Panasonic not bothering to update the GX9 yet again I think I will move to FF with Sony this year.

Hey Grant. Been a while. Just wanna ask your thoughts on the lumix gx vario 35-100 f2.8 on an olympus camera. Specially the em1 mkii
yeah - could be a cool combo :)
@grantrobertdavies got the lens. Thanks. Was on heck of a deal. 3 lenses for the price of one.
getting close to upgrading my G9 to the G9ii .........about 90% in , or maybe an S5 , but the weight of the new lenses is putting me off.
I’m in!
Hi Grant,
I am a bit surprised that you consider buying in a aps-c system with the A6600. I personally would rather wait for what Panasonic S1mkII will do or go for an S5 (II). As In personally think such camera would add more to your current setup. As Imo fullframe and M43 are the great match. As you experience best of both world. You also keep trusted menu systems. Which make it easier know the camera. I am Using the S5 and G9M2, which are very similar in use. But both have their strengths.
Don't worry about what I'm doing - You just focus on yourself and what works for you! :)
need G9ii sensor in a smaller body. that's the only new gear I would want to buy - otherwise would buy used. that doesnt help Lumix, so Lumix, please stop trying to sell me the stuff YOU want to sell, because those things not the same ;)
Definitely not. Sold all my m43, even moving on from aps-c to fullframe. Size isn't everything. For small I got a Sony RX100 iii in my pocket
cool
cool
