Wurlitzer 145B Playing for the first time after 3 1/2 years in storage
Wurlitzer 145B Built in 1939. This was the third to the last Band Organ that Wurlitzer shipped before completely closing down the Band Organ business. Production had likely ceased a number of months earlier. It may be the only surviving example of a style 145 with original factory bells (glockenspiel), and duplex (dual) roll frames. There were only 14 originally made. This video was made in 2023 just before the organ was shipped to Sand Point Idaho to be used with an antique carousel. The flap valves in both the suction and pressure pumps (bellows) had atrophied from sitting, but recovered to full capacity after several hours of playing, and still perform fine. The organ can now be heard ...

Wurlitzer 145-B Under the Double Eagle

1939 Wurlitzer style 145-B duplex military band. In 2023 we donated this organ to the Carousel of Smiles in Sand Point Idaho. While it was great to play this instrument and work on its restoration, it was time to pass it on to a venue where it could be enjoyed by people while riding on a historic carousel.

This is not your typical review. In this video I wanted to highlight some of the things that they don’t show you regarding what you are going to have to deal with as part of owning one of these units. Don’t get me wrong, I really like the coach, but I wanted to present a realistic view of the level of quality that goes into the manufacture of RV’s today. One thing I want to stress, is that this...

I just got through adjusting my 15 year old Yamaha DU-1 Disklaiver, so I thought I would make a video of it playing a GM MIDI file. I was also testing the video and audio on a new iPad, I did finally fix the focus problem by turning off the automatic wide/normal camera switching. So, given the content here, I guess I will see how long it takes to get a copyright claim on this video… Edit- Wow t...

Did you forward all your findings to Coach men
Sad that some of us older, less physical people aren't able to troubleshoot and fix those issues. Thank you for sharing. I wanted one, but I just can't have my rv in the shop forever instead of living my best last days traveling, and some are dangerous, such as pinched wires could start a fire. I would be scared to sleep in it. Thank you so much for sharing.
The quality is par with Thor's.
Tune?
I bought a 2024 Jayco Granite Ridge 22T in late October and though the design is amazing the fit and finish is so unacceptable for $140,000 but I have done same with inspecting and correcting poor quality workmanship. First thing I did was tighten all 500 screws with a hand screw driver but so dissapointing for money spent
You need to work on more band organs. The voicing is absolutely perfect on this.
Wow. You really should be reimbursed by coachmen for all the time you had to put into this tv. I’m so glad that I stumbled across this video today. You helped me out tremendously! Like the man said, do better Coachmen. Thanks for the video.
Marvelous tone and play
Absolutely wonderful. Please keep trying to find a way to fix this .
@@Alice-ng2po It is fine now. This was just from sitting for so long.
The name of the song is The Battle of Gettysburg March by E. T. Paull (who else?). The arrangement is from an obscure roll that was restored and resurrected by Mikey Mills of mechanicalmusic.org. A big shout out to him for preserving these great arrangements that might otherwise be lost to the ages. The sheet music can be found here musescore.com/crono23/battle-of-gettysburg
I wouldn't worry about stuff (like the skylight opening) normally hidden behind trim or in the wall IF it is functional. The wiring-Yikes! It is easy to blame the installers, but this isn't a one-off example. The problem is corporate and management. They know the issues, they know people know the issues and buy them anyway and they are making money.
I agree that the cosmetic issues in and of themselves are not that big of a deal. But, they are indicative of a deeper lack of concern when it comes to other aspects of construction such as structural, electrical, plumbing, and the proper installation of appliances and systems. You are correct that this primarily is a corporate and management problem, however, I have owned seven previous RV’s going back to the mid seventies. Two VW campers; a Westfalia and a Winnebago, a Toyota motrrhome, two class A’s, and an R-pod. There had been a dramatic change in the quality, even from 2017, when we had the R-pod. I was not expecting this much disfunction in the industry, and I’m not sure that others who are looking at buying a new RV, even those with past experience like me, are prepared for what I and many others have had to deal with.
Thank you for this video. We purchased a 2023 21XG in June 2023. We previously had a 2012 Heartland Landmark (great rv); then a Class B Jayco Swift before choosing to purchase our Cross Trail. I wish I understood and could repair things. That was my husband’s area, but he is no longer able. I’ve been on a huge learning curve. Fortunately, I found a great rv tech. When I was placing magnets around the fans for the covers, I did become aware of the messy cut out, and it does make it more difficult to get the edge piece seated back correctly. This was much easier to do in our van as the fan cut outs were so clean. Our gps has never worked, I thought it was a subscription thing, and now I know what to do to remedy. We are changing out our microwave, and I am curious to see if we have the same mess. Our back cabinet came loose. I only store linens in it. Our tech repaired it. We do have a ceiling strip that has come loose. How did you repair that? Our REGO system was not functioning as expected as we made our 7,000 mile maiden voyage. Our tech took care of the programming and the missing fuse between the chassis and house at the ccp. We also had a second battery and 800 watts of solar installed. That has been the best upgrade!
@@danitaortowski9519 Yeah, I had to reconfigure the programming on my Renogy system as well. Our unit had the second battery from the factory, but somewhere along the line it went missing. I did eventually get it, but it took awhile for the factory to replace it. Fortunately, it was well documented that it was an installed option. I’m pretty sure your GPS issue is the same as mine, as there is no subscription required for it to work. The wire from the sync 4 system wasn’t actually as neatly piled in the compartment as it appears in the video, I had to retrieve it so I could re- fish it through the overhead. I have not had a chance to deal with the ceiling yet, I’m still hassling with the plumbing at present. It is great that you found a good technician, they seem to be few and far between.
@@Art_ThompsonThank you for your response.
The flap valves on the suction and pressure pumps had atrophied from sitting, and after playing it for a while they fully recovered and are working fine. A reminder to collectors and museums to exercise their instruments from time to time. It was quite a panic as the gentleman from the carousel organization was due to arrive to hear it the next day. But all was well when he arrived. The organ is now in its new home and is playing great.
Thank you! You dissuaded me from purchasing it. I am guessing you were referring to Critter RV.
I don’t blame you for not wanting to deal with all the issues involved with the purchase of a new RV. Since making this video, I have found a half dozen more problems that had the potential to cause serious issues. The worst being a plumbing leak in an area where it would not have ordinarily been discovered in time to prevent serious damage to the floor and wall. I found it while dealing with something else… If you lived near a dealership that had good tech’s and the shop capacity to make repairs with little or no wait, it wouldn’t be nearly as bad, but still, the sheer number of issues would make ownership difficult for the average person. The Critter RV guy tried very hard to be positive, perhaps too hard. Like myself, he has the skills to make his own repairs, and so for us, these things are an annoyance and inconvenience, but not the end of the world. I feel for the people who must rely on a dealership for all repairs, as for them, this coach would be an overwhelming nightmare. If I had it to do again, I would probably have one of the small upfitters convert an AWD commercial van or small box truck. I thought about having my 24’ Sprinter converted, but it is not all wheel drive.

Where did you get the pipes?
The piece has an underlying sadness, as if Joplin was summarizing the final stage of the illness which took his life in 1917.
When sending MIDI data to this device, do you find that it responds in a musically nuanced way to the range of MIDI note-on velocities?
If properly set up to the particular piano it is being used on it will. Because I use it on a variety of pianos I have the dynamic range limited to a very narrow expression. Most of the stuff I play doesn’t have much if any dynamics anyway. On most of these solenoid systems, in the settings, one would set the minimum velocity to where the note barely strikes, and the maximum to whatever you think the piano will tolerate without breaking something. When this is done, as the master volume is raised, the dynamics increase, and if the volume is reduced they are compressed.
Thanks, Art.
I especially like the warning that says "don't drop in lifeboat" We just had two of them donates to our museum ship. Now to figure out what to do with them. The military museums near her are most ly Army themed.
I own one of the little II/2 Wicks "production" instruments (Gemshorn voiced as a Spitz Principal, and a unit flute 16-2 foot). It came from the factory with the pipes voiced on 2-inch pressure. I sent all of the metal pipes on this instrument to have the c. 1996 Wicks open-toe voicing changed to normal coned-in toes, and have the flues nicked a bit to get rid of the "trash". It's a nice little practice instrument. FYI, it's Wicks' Opus 4654, 1966.
It ended up with us. We are employees of Artisan Instruments/Organs in Seattle. We removed the organ in 2012 and installed most of it in our home. It was there until 2015, when we brought some of it to North Carolina, and the rest went to Salem, OR.

So cool!
It's a band in a box and it has the soul of Janice Joplin......😊
Is that a MIDI Pedal? If so which product is it?
It is a Roland product (PK 25) that was an accessory for the VK 75 organ. It has been discontinued by Roland, but Viscount sells a similar unit. It is called a Pedalboard 25. They are expensive though…
Does this organ have a facade?
Yes, it is currently in primer awaiting paint.
My 4820CH has same noise since brand new. It has the Kukje A2300, 48hp.
The bass is perfect. Tempo makes me want to grab the cat and waltz!
That Witte runs good 😇🙏
A piece of history.. congrats
I would like to add a rank of flu types to my Viscount Chorum 90dlx. Is that possible?
Yes, it appears from the specifications of your organ that you can. It does not explicitly state that the stop data is transmitted through MIDI, but I assume that since you can record a song from the MIDI out, I believe that it is. The Artisan micro midi relay system that I used can be programmed to route the key and stop data to the pipe action. While it would be preferable to activate the pipe stop from the console, and maybe be able to also deactivate the electronic voice in the organ programming, you can always play an external rank, or even an entire pipe organ just from the MIDI out.

THIS IS SUCH A COOL THINGER I dont even know what it is It looks like fingers on a bar that play pedals and keys through midi How much are they and what are they called?
I think it was commonly used for that.
I’m not sure If I’m right, but didn’t they play this song whenever there was a trapeze act performance in the circus or acrobatic acts I’m quite sure it was probably used for the trapeze acts.
Mind makes that exact same noise I'm pretty sure it's normal I believe it's an anomaly that has to do with the injection timing I don't think they time to these engines for optimal power and performance they timed them for optimal fuel economy Anyway they all make that noise so if it means there's something wrong then there's something wrong with all of them
That is pretty much the conclusion I have come to. (Pre)Detonation in a diesel can mimic a mechanical noise, and since it goes away under heavy load, that is probably what it is. Yes, the engine is definitely detuned, they had to keep it at 25hp or under to not have to equip it with the emissions garbage. When the warranty is done I might adjust things a bit, I have the Cummins specs for all the power ranges and applications for the A1700, it is nominally rated at 37hp. I wrenched my way through college working as a diesel and heavy equipment mechanic.
@artthompson7805 could you share those specs with me on tuning the engine up? I just got a 2515h, mine has the same exact noise as well
@@ryanhollinger5702 Since I still have five years left on my warranty, I haven’t really looked into it. Increasing the output is likely going to involve more than a simple adjustment.
This is great information. I bought mine about 3 weeks ago ands wondering what that sounds is. I'm glad it's normal. I'll be interested in tuning mine up when the time comes. It's good to know there's some headroom to these models.
I love someone calling "Kaiden" in the background. That was so funny!!
it is not suitable to play modern praise and worship music, better for the classic hymns.
That really good! Thanks for sharing this 😊.
wow...this vid is kinda old already. But still, nice to get to see you play the organ again Art!
Hello Jon! Well, I’m kinda old these days too. This is an ancient Allen organ I rescued from Anchorage First Baptist. I was going to use it to control one of the pipe organs I rescued, but it is massive and probably wouldn’t fit in too many places. Nowadays I live in a small native village in rural Alaska where I serve as an independent missionary.
Looks like a very well-done installation. Such a shame some old fuddy duddies didn't understand its value and disliked it so. Where did it end up after it was removed? Also I'd love to see the other videos you have of it playing in this location if possible. I remember at my high school years ago I would imagine what it would be like if a small theatre organ was in our school gym: it's such a great acoustical environment for these instruments.
Thanks. This time it wasn’t my boomer peers (who seem to want to destroy everything that came before them), but a bunch of GenX snobs that didn’t want to be bothered with it. The organ was rescued by Mark Anderson, who used it as the core for his studio instrument.
@@Art_Thompson Ah I see. So glad it survived!
