I used to be Andy from Competitive Cyclist. Now, I'm just Andy.
Which TIme Is Right for Me?
I’m in the enviable position of owning all three of Time’s newest generation of frames: the Alpe DHuez 01 (which I’ll refer to as my ADH), the ADHX and now the ADHX 45 (let’s call it the 45 to make things easier). I’ve been on the red ADH about two years, and on the blue ADHX almost a year now. The 45 got here in mid October, and after only a handful of rides I’m happy to have it in the family. I reviewed both of them and one of the most frequently asked questions I get across both videos is basically some version of: which Time is right for me?

Time ADHX 45: First Impressions

I’ve been riding my beautiful blue Time ADHX for almost a year now, and it’s flat-out unbelievable as both a fast gravel and a road bike. But if you try to run tires much bigger than 38, you’re going to be disappointed - which has been an echoing refrain since it launched. Well, as you probably know by now Time heard our cries and has answered them - with the all new ADHX 45. I built mine about...

I’ve had the ADHX for just over 6 months now. It arrived in late December, and to be honest I spared no expense on the build: The spec list looks like this: ENVE gravel bars and 3.4 AR wheels with Chris King Ceramic bearings, there’s more ceramic goodness from BBInfinite at the bottom bracket, and I went with a SRAM Red AXS 1-by groupset. It was a very wet winter here in california, so I threw ...

Throughout their history Time has worked with the world’s best cyclists and teams to create bikes and products that are untouchable. Time’s palmares is revered and they’ve been part of countless iconic moments in cycling over four decades. And for me, none are more iconic than what I like to call The Hardest Gravel Race on Earth: Paris Roubaix. Boonen rode to victory on his Time, and the Quicks...

Andy! Just found your channel and have enjoyed combing through your videos. Hope there’s more to come! Looks like it’s been a while…
Thanks! I’m actually reviewing for Competitive Cyclist again! Head over there to see my new shootouts
Which one is the closest to an endurance bike?
They all have fairly racy geometry, but if you go up one size you can achieve a more granfondo fit
Can you add length at the stem to these frames for a more upright right? Or is that not recommended anymore these days?
You still living your Enve foundation 45’s and are they still on your most recommended wheel list ? (Compared to possibly Enve 4.5 or 3.5 or others like Roval Terra clx)
If you’re running 28’s, then yes - the 45’s are fantastic. However, the wider 3.4’s and 4.5’s are much better for 30c and above.
Great Andy thank you so much for taking the time to reply and share your input. I appreciate the opinion of someone of your pedigree in the vast ocean of shills and promoting influencers. For the foundation series, may I conclude that for 65mm depth aero set the same could apply (compared 4.5, 5.6) if using a 28mm tyre for road racing ? Even the spokes type and numbers of spokes appears to be stiffer and stronger on the foundation series.
Enviable is an understatement!
Hi Andy! I'm a cyclist too. I plan to buy a Polar watch. my focus is to increase endurance training (mostly I'm joining local bicycle events 100 km+) and sometimes a bit clueless about my training between overtraining or not. do you think it is worth buying?
I think there are better options for measuring fatigue and recovery, to be honest. If measuring training load is the priority and you’ve already got a nice cycling computer (Garmin or Wahoo) then I’d add a Whoop instead of a Polar.
whats the max tyre width for the ADHX frame ?
I wouldn’t go any wider than 38.
@@AndyClarkRealReviewsTHANKS Andy. And disc brakes are necessary with this frame ? I want something lighter.
As someone who owns multiple time bikes I have a question. Can you have them do custom things to some of their frames? I’m thinking mudguard mounts and SRAM udh rear derailleur hanger
No, I’m afraid not. Custom paint with a long lead time is as close as you’ll get.
Hi Andy, love your vid's! I've been searching the Time website to figure out what the difference is between the outgoing ADHX and the Alpe 'd Huez X, except for the magnificent paint job on the new version I don't know what sets them apart? My next bike will be an X but which one?? Thanks! Cheers Bob
@thetimesport can you help me out here?
Other than weight, how does the ADH compare to the ADHX if you ran both with 28 mm high quality supple tires? The geometry looks very similar.
They’re very close, performance-wise. How will you be using it?
@@AndyClarkRealReviews All on road. Some very rough. I have 1971 Bob Jackson Reynolds 531, w/full Campy, 32 mm Rene Herse extra-light tires, TPU inner tubes, 63 psi. Comfortable, quick, classic stage race bike but HEAVY. 1987 Vitus 1987 (Sean Kelly's ride) w/fully Campy. Love the ride, good handling, but max tire is 25 mm, 85 psi. Not good for rough roads. Recent top of the line Trek Domane w/Dura-Ace Di-2 12 speed, 38 mm Rene Herse extra light, measure 42 mm, 38 psi. Ride is not as comfy as the Bob Jackson. Sluggish handling, and about 2 pounds heavier than an equivalent non-endurance carbon. Basically looking for quick handling, light weight, dance on pedals during climbs, and chip seal, tar strip comfort on 4-5 hr rides. Going to trade the Domane for ADH or ADHX. Would like to test ride, but no dealers any where near Indianapolis.
NO racing!
@@brucelulu829 TBH from a performance angle, they're almost identical. I'd take a good look at the ADHX over the ADH. Exploring wider tires is a lot of fun, and can lead to new roads and new adventures.
@@AndyClarkRealReviews Thanks! A little reluctant to drop thousands w/o a test ride 😲
This generation of 105 was too good to buy anything more expensive. My old Ultegra 6700 wore out and I swapped it for this and can say it’s an upgrade over the older generation Ultegra.
Yep. Best kept secret in bike components!
Great review love that jacket 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!
Great review… tbh I found the music distracting (until it was gone)
Hi Andy, i own a TIME Scylon 2023 disc, and recently pulled the trigger on a ADH disc 2023 as well, love those two bikes, the ride quality is top the notch, the best way i could describe it is smooth and stiff at the same time. Now recently there is a huge hype on both the internet and the local cycling community about the sworks sl8, didn't have the chance to test it out myself, but the hype makes me wondered did i make a mistake on getting the ADH disc 2023🤔? What do you think?
I haven’t ridden any of the Tarmacs, so I really can’t compare the two.
Thinking between an AHDX and 45...70% Road around 30% Gravel Rides would you still steer towards the 45 for mostly Road use?
Depends. What’s the “gravel” like where you live? Smooth or rough?
@@AndyClarkRealReviews oh mostly just fine EU gravel combined with wood roads
@@oliverbergmann611738 mm gravel tires are ridiculously capable these days, just saying 😉
I have a FIAT 500 Sport with a rear hatch spoiler; how would you recommend mounting a bike on this?
You can probably put it on the roof like a traditional rack, but you may have to place it diagonally. Measure first!
using Sram Red first generation 11 speed grupo.....but the rearl derailler is not working right. is there a sram deraiuller in axs line 11 speed that I can subsitute?
AXS is 12-speed only and isn’t cable actuated, so it’s completely incompatible
I'm thinking of buying either the TIME ADHX or 45. Now I'm mostly doing rides on paved road, but I can see myself in the future riding more on gravel as well. Since it is a major investment buying this bike, I'm trying to be smart down the line as well. How does the ADHX45 feel with, 32 mm wheels? Would it be betetter to go for only ADHX?
If you put them side by side with the same components wheels and tires they would be identical on the road. I ‘d go with the 45 because it gives you the option for bigger tires later. The ADHX really can’t handle anything over a 38 which is limiting for a modern gravel bike.
New video on it soon?
Unfortunately no, working on another project
Would you run the foundation 45's on a gravel set up with 45mm tires?
Yep! It’s not ideal but I’ve done it. I’d rather have a larger internal rim width with 45’s though.
This is perfect for my Miata.this is still way cheaper than install hitch cost $300+ additional bike rack cost anywhere $300-$500. Depending what brand your using. I came close of buying product but I was hesitant due to safety issue. Last thing I’m worrying about my bike would be flying to someone’s windshield. In the future definitely I’ll go with this route.
ADHX or ADHX 45 is my next bike in 2025, I already have TIME Alpe d'huez 2023 ; )
I am with you. I love my ADH so much that I am considering adding an ADHX too
Amateurs pretending they are pros and paying over $1,000 for a set of bicycle wheels so they can play poser pretender out on the road. Comical stuff and amazing how gullible and easily marketed to so many people are. Amateurs worried about wind tunnel results or rolling resistance for their recreational bicycle. If you fellas only had a modicum of self awareness and realized how silly you all appear pretending you need aero wheels or an $8000 non-powered bicycle. LOL 😀
Damn, this suits my usage perfectly, I want a half way house between tight road and club fit with storage and it would match my POC Octal, but they don't do it any more!! Do you know what the fit on the Essential Road SS Jersey is like please?
I’d call it a snug club fit.
@@AndyClarkRealReviews ah could be what I'm after then, I have a couple of Specialized RBX jerseys which are a nice fit, but can't seem to find them now. Thanks for your response
Lol those lenses are ugly and big asf, they don't look cool, by the way the helmets from that brand are ugly too
I just bought one of these as I had limited options for my Mercedes. The panels were too tight for a trunk rack, and I don't want to put an ugly trailer hitch on it. This looked like a good fit. After watching lots of reviews I decided to try it out.
Awesome, can't wait to hear how much you love it!
Thanks for sharing!! I would love to use the SeaSucker Suction Cup outside on my sunroof for my GoPro while going through Utah and Colorado next month but, I'm afraid it could potentially crack the glass pumping it up. What's your thoughts? Thanks again! 👍
Shouldn't be a problem - the suction cups are designed for both painted surfaces and windshields/windows/glass.
Beatiful bike! I'm really thinking about getting one because I don't have enough money for a Time and a Look 765 models seem just a bit too slack to my taste.
Great review, thank you! Made my mind up to buy the Foundation 45's!
Mine are still going strong!
The headtube slowmo beauty shot (:50s) shows and odd wrinkle in the carbon fiber fabric. It looks a little off in the shot. Is there a problem there or is that just “cosmetic”?
Are you talking about the wrinkles down by the fork? that’s pretty normal because that’s a really tough juncture to form.
Oakley. Question answered.
Fanboy
I have the regular Aspero and wow. It brings a smile to my face when I put the power down. Love it. Cant wait until I put some lighter wheels, sram wireless shifters and get in shape.
Really appreciate all the info, including your generous amount of replies in the comments as well. This is very helpful to those considering a Time, even helpful to many already owning one.
Glad to be of service! 🫡
Andy- love your stuff. I currently ride a Giant Defy and it fits great but is long in the tooth. I'm 64 and need that slightly relaxed geometry, but still want to go fast. It's not clear to me from the Time website that the ADHX is an endurance(ish) frame. What's your take??
Hey Scott! Thanks for the note. All three of the ADH models have pretty racy geometry, so my recommendation would be to size up one size to get a taller head tube. In my competitive cyclist days we called that the “French fit” which meant a taller head tube and less exposed seat post.
Is the ADHX45 compatible with 650b wheels and fairly voluminous tires (e.g. >48mm)?
Yes, you can run 650b with 48’s but the frame is optimized to handle best with 700’s
Have an ADHX frame that I will use for road riding when all of the parts eventually arrive. LOVE the colour of that 45.
Good choice!
Just bought ADHX 45 ❤ so looking forward to 1st ride. Any recommendations for frame protection kits
hey there. which size is your 45? this looks like a very interesting option as a bike for fast gravel rides. the only thing that worries me is how quick (nervous) the steering is, head angles are quite steep and between sizes s and m, it seems to get really to the steep end. so, how would you describe the steering of this bike? i know it s maybe hard to separate one attribute like this but try anyway, thanks.
Great summary! I have also watched your Time ADHX/ADHX 45 videos. How would you compare this to the ADHX 45? I'm looking at a more road-oriented gravel bike so ADHX 45, Aspero, Salsa Warbirdand even Niner RLT RDO in the mix for me.
Thanks! If you want to run anything bigger than a 38 then you need to get the Time. I know the Aspero states a 40 mm max tire clearance but if you’re running 38 on rims with an internal width of 24 or bigger than you’re going to be over 40. better safe than sorry in my opinion and on the road and in the dirt the time is a faster and smoother bike anyway
Where and how do you put a Di2 battery if you have the Ergon post?
Ohhhh man, I don’t have a clue! I’m a SRAM guy, so I don’t really have any experience with Di2
Thank you for your honest opinion. It helped me make the decision to go ahead with v4rs + force.
Love it!!
Just ordered a green ADHX like the one in the video, can't wait for it to arrive. Will be a road build, it will take a while to get it done but hopefully worth the wait.
❤❤❤❤
Horrible fd 😢
Your story is almost identical to mine, except I was older when started cycling. First time product Time pedals and shoes - thank Pedro Delgado and Sean Yates for those. Next Time carbon fork. Then VXRS frame - Paulo Bettini. Loved that frame. Shopping for Alpe D’Huez now going for unpainted. It will be only Time in the world with the finish for sure. :)
Is toe overlap an issue on the ADHX or the ADHX45?
Yeah, unfortunately it is - the geo is pretty tight. But it's a once or twice-a-ride occurrence for me, and only happens at stoplights!
both 😞
Do you recommend putting them on the rear glass more or the front?
Both are fine, I have a 2021 Outback now and I put it on top toward the front. I mounted it like this on the Acura because it wasn’t as noisy - the cups hold equally well on glass and metal.
Who makes that handlebar tape? It’s a perfect match!
JRC Components! Here’s a link. amzn.to/3TYUpwA
Hi, I have a Cannondale Topstone Neo SL 1 Gravel E Bike, with Redshift stem and seat post , had them for 18 months and would never remove them, I live in Scotland and follow a reviewer called Ride with Roy, he is similar age to me with gravel bike and I suggested Redshift to him, he acquired the stem and raved about it on his channel and gave me a mention on his review.
Can you put 28 tires on the ADHX 45 to make it more road oriented? Or is there a minimum tire size larger than that?
you can go as narrow as you want! I'm just limited to 28 because the internal width of my rims is 25mm. If your rim has an internal width of 19-21 you can run 23'3, 25's and 28's!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video- I found it very helpful! Also love the puns at the end 😂
Glad it was helpful!
Any experience with the DT Swiss 1400 dicuts?
No, but I spent some time on the aluminum 1800’s - they’re sublime!
