Time Alpe D'Huez 01 Long Term Review

  • 1987. I was a sophomore in high school, and by that time I’d been riding road bikes seriously for about a year. I had a tri-color steel Schwinn Tempo with either 6 or 7 speed Shimano 105, and I’d just installed my first set of clipless pedals, a pair of Time Sports. At that time, clipless technology was BRAND NEW, like less than a year old, so you might say I was a bit of an early adopter
Alll these years later, the Time brand holds a special place in my heart because these pedals were the first “upgrade” I ever made…to…any bicycle. As a result of my affinity to the brand, I always enjoyed watching the greats like Bettini and Boonen slay the field on their Time frames and when I got my first ‘real’ road bike around 1997 - a Team Saeco Cannondale CAAD4 - I was thrilled to see that the Coda branded carbon fork was manufactured by none other than…you guessed it…TIME.
And then, out of the clear blue sky in 2020, THE GUY WHO SOLD ME THOSE PEDALS in 87 TOLD ME HE JUST BOUGHT TIME BICYCLES. No joke. I can’t make this up. Not long after that he invited me to be a brand ambassador, and sent me a frame - this bright red beauty, my Alpe D’Huez 01. I’ve been riding it for almost a year now, and I’ve even loaned it out to a few buddies - and we all agree: it’s one of the most well-refined road bikes we’ve ever ridden.
And the reason is simple: Time owns literally every step of the manufacturing process from thread to frame. Here’s what I mean: Time is the only brand outside of Asia that owns both the Braided Carbon Structure and Resin Transfer Moulding processes. This allows TIME to control every individual strand of carbon used in the construction of a frame. They’ve been doing this for close to 40 years and as a result they’ve elevated the standard in creating carbon fibre to match the level you find in a Formula One car
There are two key acronyms to remember here: BCS and RTM. BCS stands for Braided Carbon Structure and is Time’s process of weaving braids of fibres into complex bi-directional textiles of fabric. And since they’re weaving the fabric before it’s impregnated with resin they’re able to tune it with different materials - TIME currently choses from 16 filaments to perfectly tailor the carbon layups. The important thing to remember is that this process allows something that is unheard of in the cycling world; continuous, unbroken fibres that run the full length of a tube or structure.
And when the fabric is ready to move to production, Time employs Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) to minimize defects in the composite structure. By injecting resin under high pressure between rigid external and internal molds, air pockets are pushed out and voids between layers are eliminated. That means the resin can only flow where the precise moulds allow and only assume shapes that are intended, meaning RTM quality is extremely high-tolerance, uniform, and consistent yields a beautiful finished product. I’ve seen just about every frame under the sun cut in half, and Time is the only one that looks as beautifully finished on the inside as it does on the outside.
All of this fine tuning translates into a ride quality that can best be described as Refined Responsiveness. Tons of frames have one or the other, or a mix of both but typically when you tip the scales in favor of responsiveness (and stiffness and low weight) you lose REFINEMENT (which includes things like ride quality, compliance, handling, and comfort). A bike like a Pinarello Dogma is all responsiveness, and very little refinement - unless you let some air out of the tires. By contrast, the pegoretti marcelo is certainly responsive, but mostly refined. The Alpe DHuez is the first bike I’ve owned in a long time that creates an almost perfect balance between the two.
It corners and descends like the Dogma, and screams uphill like my old Cervelo R5. But when things slow down or it gets bumpy, the bike isn’t harsh and unmanageable making it really easy to stretch my rides out past 4 and 5 hours. And because it’s tuned for refinement it’s also super versatile: I ran it with 30c tires and my shockstop suspension stem for BWR, and loaned it to my buddy with the same setup for our annual gravel ‘training camp’ here in Temecula: 4 days, 250 miles, and 25000 feet of climbing with a 70/30 mix of road to gravel. Side note: don’t run 30’s with this frame unless you don’t mind scraping off some paint. 28’s are really about as big as you need to go, and if you need something bigger - the new ADHX uses all the same tech with all road geometry and clearance for 38’s.
So, it’s obvious that I really like this bike but to prove it I want to cite one thing - and it’s kind of a big deal: after 6 months of owning the Alpe Dhuez, I sold my beloved limited edition R5, which is a bike I swore I’d keep forever. Nothing I rode ever came close to the R5, but I knew after one ride on the time that the R5’s days were numbered

I bought my Alp D'Huez last week and I agree with everything you said. I've had many bikes over the past 38 years, very few of them felt incrementally better than the last. This is by and far the best frame I've ridden. I paired it with DA Di2, rim brakes, Pro Vibe stem and bar and, ahem, Lightweight wheels... which I only bought because it's very difficult to find reasonably priced quality wheels right now and I was able to find these locally with just a few miles on them. The bike came it at 14.8 lbs with Wahoo pedals. I couldn't be happier.

Hey Andy, interesting timing for your video! I’ve been having a lot of thoughts about Time in the past few months. Their older frame finishes didn’t really work for me and as I’m aesthetically driven I opted to wait. The new finishes are so classy!
I’m after a frame for a full Campagnolo rim brake build. I’m not wanting to over capitalise on a rim frame as it’s more just to tick the campy box. However I’m also so impressed by Time that I’m considering a double purchase and getting a disc frame also.
    So a few questions:
    1. Do you have any thoughts or experience with the Alpe d,Huez 21 versus the AdH 1?
    2. Did you try the time carbon bars at all? I see you had an alternative bar on your bike in the video. They look pretty sweet.
    3. Have you tried the regular fork, as opposed to Activ fork?
    Thanks for your review.

Hey Joel! Yeah, I spent a weekend on the ADH1 and it's really close but I could definitely feel a difference in the responsiveness column. The Time bars are amazing, but the bend shape didn't work for me (they are too deep). Lastly, stick with the Activ fork. It's the real deal and makes a difference for sure (you can also remove the damper to reduce weight, but it's only like 50g).

What i would like to know: How about the weight of the frame? Is it yet a rim brake version? These days with almost every frame having disc brakes, the weights increased step by step. We are now at frame weights about a 1000 Grams, whereas just a few years ago people (including me) were looking for frames getting way beyond this line. With the „disappearance“ of rim brakes also the quest for the lightest frame seem to have disappeared. Nowadays marketers call a complete bike with just under 8 kgs „lightweight“, which is almost ridiculous i.m.o.

I’m still on a 2013 SuperSix Evo hi mod, which I know was a favorite of yours Andy way back when. Part of the joy of this bike of course is that in addition to its stiffness in the right spots and awesome ride, it’s also comically lightweight (mine is 14.5 with cheating titanium speed plays).
I’m looking at these Time bikes as a possible new bike option so curious how you can relate the Time to that old Cannondale? Also, was the R5 a huge step up from that Evo, as that’s also on my shortlist….

I would step over the R5 to get to the Alpe D'Huez, and I actually did: I sold my R5 disc a few months after I built up the Time. The SuperSix is an amazing frame, but at the end of the day it's lacking the smooth refinement of the ADH. "Ride Quality" can be hard to define, but you definitely KNOW it when you feel it - and the ADH delivers the most vintage-steel like ride I've ever experienced on a carbon bike, without sacrificing any of the gains of a modern carbon frame. And yes, I stole that analogy from another commenter because he said it better than me!!

but will it come with the same weight penalty and the lesser stiffness from, say, bottom bracket through rear chain stays that made this EVO so damn efficient?

@@lostincosmos I'm of the opinion that at some point, lower weight equals diminishing returns. The ADH is 960 grams, and the SSE is 650. You can easily find 300g elsewhere, but honestly it won't make you either faster or slower. Aerodynamic and mechanical resistance gains can far "outweigh" the 300g. Wheel/tire setup alone can make up the difference, even if it's heavier! I'd recommend spending some time with the Marginal Gains podcast to better understand where I'm coming from.

Hey Shana! I checked out your channel...do you live in Chicago? I lived there for a few years and would happy to recommend a good shop/community of cyclists to help you on your journey. As for the bike - if I'm looking at the right course map, it appears to be flat until you hit the famous climb...and then it's all uphill! TBH, your rim brake bike should be just fine from a braking and weight perspective. I'd spend my money on other upgrades like a lighter set of wheels/tires and maybe an aero helmet and a good aero clip on for the flat section. Of course, I won't talk you out of getting the ADH (because it's amazing) but for me, there's other things to spend your money on. Like an upgrade to biz or first class for the flight over :-P

I'm a bit puzzled about that comment regarding tire clearance. Time writes on its homepage max. tire size is 28C - 30mm. I want to run Enve 4.5 AR Disc wheels and 28mm tires which I expect to balloon to 30mm. If these don't fit, then that is not the frame for me unfortunately. Everything else I'd really like about the ADH1. It is 5mm shorter than my Tarmac SL6 and has a higher stack. As I am more legs than torso this would allow me to run a longer stem and less spacers under it. But the tire clearance seems to be a dealbreaker unfortunately :(

    • @AndyClarkRealReviews
      @AndyClarkRealReviews  2 года назад +2

Will they (air quotes) fit? (air quotes)...yes: to the naked eye, there appears to be plenty of clearance on a 30c when the bike is stationary or in the stand. However, when the tires, wheels, and frame flex (as they should) under normal use, the 30c tires will ABSOLUTELY rub on the frame. It's light, and imperceptible, but it happens (and I have the bald spots on my frame's paint to prove it). Go for the new ADHX if you want something with more range.

I rode a TIME RX Instinct in college and it was my favorite bike I have owned to date. Currently riding a 54cm Allez Sprint that I feel good on and comparing geo charts it seems like the headtube lengths on the Time are consistently taller which would lead one to believe a more relaxed fit (comparing the 54 Allez 133mm to a small Time 149mm HT length). The Time also has a much shorter reach and taller stack so I am wondering how "racey" this bike rides compared to the Allez if you have any experience. I am looking at purchasing a ADH 01 frame but am having a hard time determining size with no dealer close to me. For what its worth, I just bought and built a ADH 01 size SMALL. I'm 175 cm and here is my current setup. Saddle height is 70cm, 100mm -6 degree stem with 15mm spacers, Power Pro saddle setback 8cm (standard saddle setback 5cm). My previous bike was a Tarmac SL6 Pro disc size 54, and after having professional bike fit I had it setup as follows, saddle height 70cm, 90mm -6 degree stem with 10mm spacers, Power Pro saddle setback 8cm (standard saddle setback 5cm). You can review the Tarmac geometry for yourself but you will see that the Small ADH01 and the 54 Tarmac are practically identical except for the reach in which ADH01 is 11mm shorter. At first glance at ADH01 geometry I would agree stack seems tall for a racy bike, but after digging into it I now think that its more that the reach is short because it is intended to be run with a longer stem as part of the overall design and one should be sizing down to match desired stack height. So instead of buying a MEDIUM and running with a 100 stem, one should be be buying a SMALL and running with a 110mm stem thus achieving the equivalent of a Tarmac size 54 with a 100 stem (stock). If you look on the Time US site and look at the "complete bikes", you will see that the SMALL size comes with a 110mm stem stock. Like all bike sizing charts its just a starting point, and probably for a beginner, the sizing recommendations are more applicable as they will sit more upright etc. For me personally, I actually debated between the SML & XS sizes. Since the reach was the same, it became a function on stack height, but XS was a bit too low for me. Again for what its worth, if your current Allez setup is similar to my Tarmac setup, I say go with size SMALL or even XS if you want to get really low.
BTW - I have been out on a few rides and I will say the ADH 01 did not disappoint, it is superb in all aspects. I will post a more in depth review of the bikes performance on here in the coming days.

Thanks for the brilliant review. I'm hoping that as a TIME brand ambassador it ok to ask for your opinion/advice. I've pretty much talked my self into the ADH frameset, but trying to decide between 01 and 21. I had been eyeing frames from Chpater2, Factor, Open etc, but am intrigued and impressed with Time's manufacturing process and quality.
My current bike is 2020 Spec Tarmac SL6 Pro Disc Force AXS size 54, Roval CL50, Pirelli PZero Race 28cc run tubeless @ 72/67psi. I'm 5'9" 170lbs. I don't race but do rack up about 150 mile/week on NorCal roads. I love this bike and am very comfortable with ride quality performance etc. but am looking for something new. I will be moving virtually all componentry over from this SL6 onto new ADH. Have a few concerns/questions. I'm looking for any excuse to buy the 01 but am concerned it might be to firm/harsh of a ride compared to my SL6. I know Activ fork is an option, but it seems not readily available in US and I'm not ecstatic about the additional cost and weight so I'd rather stick with regular fork (although my new authorized dealer in Berkeley, CA thinks they can get it not problem) I know from your review you had an RC5 which I believe to be similar to Sworks SL6, so just looking for your thoughts if you think that my ADH 01 disc with the above mentioned componentry will be similar in terms or performance/compliance but with with that extra refinement from the superior quality from Time manufacturing method etc., or if its just too racy and I'd be better off going with ADH 21. One other thing to mention is that per my fit, I have to run a 90mm stem on my SL6 and per ADH geometry, actually looks like will be a slightly better fit for me and I will be able to run a 100mm stem. ON a side note, I also have a 2020 BMC Roadmachine 02 Three as my more endurance/light gravel bike so the ADH will really be my "let's go fast/fun" bike.
Thank you in advance for your time/thoughts/guidance.

Hey Brian, thanks for the note. I haven't spent any time onboard the Tarmacs, so I couldn't make a direct comparison to that specific line. However, I've spent time on just about everything else (Dogmas, Factors, Cervelos, etc) and the Time really stands out from the crowd. I honestly didn't know how rigid/stiff/chattery those other bikes were until I got on the ADH - one of my other viewers @MattTTT commented below that "...its the closest thing to a classic steel frame in feel except it has that light feel and rockets uphill with ease" and for me that sums it up; it's smooth and muted when it needs to be, but fast as a Ferrari when you punch it. It's truly comfortable and performant at any speed, unlike the Dogma or R5's which only come to life above 40kph/25mph. Will it "perform" "better" than your SL6? Maybe. Will it be an overall better riding experience? Hell yes. I say pull the trigger!

@@AndyClarkRealReviews DONE!!! Just put down deposit on ADH 01 in Blue, hopefully will be arriving in few days. After I get it built up I'll post a first ride review comment and a follow-up review after I've done all my usual rides and have really gotten a feel for it. Thanks for the thoughts.

@@christopherspence9109 Congrats Spence. Yes, I've had mine now for about three weeks and put on about 350 miles. It is superb!!! Its really hard to articulate just how good it is. I do like Andy's comment about not realizing "how rigid/chattery the other bikes are in comparison to the Time ADH 01". It is so solid feeling, that it makes the other bikes feel like they are made from plastic, and the Time is made from steel, yet is still just as light. Truly unapparelled performance/ride quality combination.

Doesn't Giant do the same way with their carbon fiber and everything ? 28 max tire is a deal breaker for me, I'm too used to 30 now.... :-(

Giant builds great bikes but they do not have access to the same techniques used in automotive and aerospace. They use prepreg sheets to build frames on an inflatable mold, which is the technique used by almost ALL other manufacturers. Andy does a great job describing the unique technologies that TIME uses.
