North East steam workings from 52G Sunderland shed
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 месяца назад
8mm cine film shot by me between December 1965 and the end of BR steam in the North East on 9th September 1967. This video features locomotives from Sunderland employed on coal traffic between the pits and the docks and to power stations on Tyneside and Teesside. Sunderland shed employed ex NER 0-6-0 and 0-8-0 goods engines right up to the end of steam but WD 2-8-0s and K1s were also regularly ...

8mm cine film shot by me in the early 1970s at what I believe to be the last NCB site in County Durham to use steam locomotives. (I stand to be corrected!) Thanks. I recall that the fairly long bridge over several tracks at Eaglescliffe was used by the "Crossleys" lorries - and there was also a narrow-gauge line that transported clay, crossing what we then knew as "the back road" over the Darlington line at Allens West Halt LX, later emerging at a cross-road with the then A67 road. Bet all that's changed now...

    How brilliant. We’ve saved the plant. No more nasty coal and steel. Yes obviously we still use steel, but absolutely no CO2 are coal was used in Britain to make it. Well, yes we did lose tens of thousands of jobs, and yes there was a lot of unemployment, and yes the companies involved are no longer with us and no longer pay tax and yes we now import our steel from China and they burn coal. But look how green is all is.

    Thank-you MOST kindly for your rapid feedback on this one, Peter. I believe that the shot of the 'Q6' on the curve was taken close to the end of Cranbourne Terrace, where my secondary school friend - one Eric Short - a local cycling star - lived. His mum then owned a hairdressing salon on that corner. One way of getting into the house when locked was to open the door of the coal-chute and slide into the void ( hoping for the best)! From the cellar it was possible to access the house (leaving dusty black footprints on the carpet!).

    Is that venerable farmhouse at 3m 20s still there? Site now a housing estate? I have not visited this location in decades... I recall that the Billingham (old) station was good for sound recording, most especially of Q6s. Bowesfield Junction was just across the river from the office on Thornaby station where I worked, but I don't think I ever "taped" anything at Bowesfield. However, on Sundays when a diversion from the ECML was in place an "A1" Pacific stood "pilot" there (so that turning the engine was possible).

      The farmhouse you refer to was actually Witham Hall and was accessed from Eaglescliffe village via Quarry Bridge. There is information about the hall on the Stockton Borough archive. The hall and the bridge were both demolished some time ago leaving the site isolated and undeveloped.

    There was in the nineteen-sixties a rather unpleasant stationmaster at Eaglescliffe - who approached myself and a close friend ("Ned" Emmerson), demanding to be shown a lineside permit. I did not yet possess one, but an older school friend 'Ned' did and so stood his ground. I did not have to leave either - this particular stationmaster knew who my dad was...

    Trains on the viaduct definitely WERE visible from the Egglescliffe C.E. school a tad further back from the War memorial... In particular, I once identified a V2 Class heading south - likely on a "parcels" train... The distance JUST enough for young eyes like mine(!) to identify which class of loco it was. Just wonder at the top of the first incline whether or not the steam plant for the incline could also 'pre fill' locomotives with hot water/steam for a fast start to the day. Something Union Pacific did at there Laramie and Cheyenne depots to get a loco ready to go over the hill

    • @PeterHutchinson-jc6wv
      @PeterHutchinson-jc6wv 28 дней назад

      Hello Brian, As far as I am aware charging locomotives with hot water/ steam in the UK was only practiced on "Fireless" locomotives which were employed on shunting duties in industrial sites where there was a risk of fire. There was however a practice at some main line sheds of using hot water for the periodic washing out of boilers. By doing so the lengthy cooling down and warming up requirement was avoided which shortened the time that the loco would otherwise be out of service. Peter.

    • @briancooper562
      @briancooper562 28 дней назад

      @@PeterHutchinson-jc6wv I am not suggesting that the fill of water/steam is at pressure above atmospheric. But the pre-fill with a <100 C temperature would speed up the time to availability by about an hour. The time saved in getting to the temperature at which steam pressure can be developed by the loco fire. It would also reduce the stress of thermal cycles on the boiler.

    Loved the footage taken on Yarm viaduct! (We then lived in Newlands Road, so our house overlooked the north end of Yarm tunnel). This viaduct could clearly be seen from my junior school - Egglescliffe C.E. The structure was JUST close enough to determine the class of loco heading the train, instance at "playtime". When working for BR at Thornaby, we would visit Bowesfield Junction and many locations along the line to Redcar and from Hartlepool towards Horden Colliery - where hoppers of poor coal/dust were conveyed on a wire out to sea and tipped.. 62005 was also in the roundhouse at that time and I spent some time cleaning her up for a taping and photo-opportunity... (Successful!)

    Went to Brooms RC School 1953 to 1960. Line ran between the school and the Church. Lessons stopped for a minute or two when ore and coal trains passed (hooray from us lot!!) We saw the change from the usual two 0-8-0 engines pulling the ore trucks, to two new 0-10-0 9F's heading up the train - was exciting! Saw many of them including namer 'Evening Star'. Playground was separated from the line by a locked iron gate and a low wall. First hand view - feet away!! A tunnel a few yards further along the playground went under the line and was the access to the single track road past the church and up to the main road. Day school trip to Edinburgh 1958 0:08 0:08 from Annfield Plain station pulled by 'Mayflower' there and back. Train spotted at the Lintz line - not too far from the now famous Beamish/Causey Arch (near Tantobie where I lived), and of course Newcastle Central. Saw many A1, A2 A3 A4's, the new North British 70000's etc,etc. My Ian Allan LNER locos book is a great record of 1957 to 1960 spotting. (Spion Kop - anyone?) The 1960s a sad decade for Britain and British Railways. The Beeching cuts went too far and ruined Britain's railway infrastructure and today we are all paying the price. Instead of closing many of the lines across Britain all that was needed was the production of more diesel locomotives to replace the steam. Excellent film of British Railways in Scotland 1966.

    Always amazes me how all these trains knew where they were going along with signalmen on all those routes without computers or Smart Equipment. And, of course, coal and water replenishment was built in to timetables too. And, shunting was mesmerising, how did they all know where everything was supposed to go?

    • @PeterHutchinson-jc6wv
      @PeterHutchinson-jc6wv Месяц назад

      Hello, This is a big subject that you have raised! Generally trains were scheduled to run at specific times. locomotives carried identification codes either using lamps, white discs or letters and numbers on boards. Communication between signal boxes was done using specific bell codes tapped out using a key similar to that used in Morse code. All movements were recorded in a train register which could be referred to. Signalmen were assigned to specific boxes so that familiarity was maintained. Wagons carried destination and contents cards clipped to the underframe. Good communication , organisation , training and dedication was key to safe and efficient running.

    The footage includes Sir Nigel Gresley's special on 1 April 1967. The introductory view could be Britannia 70032 on the same day. I remember standing on Penrith Station that day. Hearing the bell ringing, which was a sign that a train not stopping was approaching, my friend and I thought it would be Sir Nigel, but no, it was Britannia 70032 with a massive freight of 50 wagons, with a long flat one at the front. Although the line is level, the engine was having a real struggle through the station, and was throwing out clouds of black smoke. Sir Nigel came through shortly after. The clean(!) Britannia at the 11 minute mark is 70013 working a football special from Carlisle to Blackpool on Boxing Day 1967, and is believed to be the last steam-hauled passenger train over Shap before the era of steam specials. If steam had continued, the M6 would have been delayed longer. Steam engines stopped for banking assistance about where the M6 crosses the line, just north of Tebay Station. Steam blowing across the M6 was considered to be a danger to road users. There were also concerns that steam locos in the Lune Gorge would interfere with visibility on the M6.

    • @PeterHutchinson-jc6wv
      @PeterHutchinson-jc6wv Месяц назад

      Hello Andrew, You are absolutely correct, the Britannia which is seen emerging from Loops Fell with a down freight is No 70032 Tennyson and also about No 70013 on the football special. I was told that the returning football special stopped at Tebay for a banker but the by this time the shed had closed and so it climbed Shap unaided from a standing start. The final shot of a Britannia in fading light at Thrimby Grange is No 70015 Apollo on the last steam worked Carlisle to Manchester parcels train. Glad that my film has brought back memories as that was my intention when setting up my channel. Peter.

    • @andrewtaylor5984
      @andrewtaylor5984 Месяц назад

      @@PeterHutchinson-jc6wv Unfortunately, I never saw Shap until the summer of 1968; the previous autumn, the school's Transport Circle tried to see if a brake-van ride could be arranged one-way. In those pre-Health and Safety days it was theoretically possible, but there was nothing scheduled on the day at a suitable time. (The service to Tebay was so sparse that we could not do a day trip from Carlisle, and get back to Newcastle the same day.) With the end of steam three weeks away, I did manage a trip to Preston and Carnforth, my first run over Shap. There was still a through train from Newcastle to Blackpool, and it was hauled by a Class 24. It made really slow progress to Shap. I may have noticed a new bridge at Thrimby Grange, but I cannot remember. Approaching Tebay, I noticed a real shock; first of all a massive overbridge just before the station, then came the bulldozing of the Line Gorge, then an even bigger bridge at Grayrigg. A vast amount of work had been done in just six months.

      A Class 24 on Shap must have been pretty rare, especially on a passenger train. If you still have Railway World for (I think) June 1967, there is a picture of Sir Nigel on the Kingmoor turntable. A duffel-coated youth is clearly visible. That is me, age 14.

    Lovely to see this, and a co-incidence. I have just cleared out some old mags, and found one with a picture of Sam Buckley on the back cover. I never met Sam, but when donating a computer to the British Association of Myasthenics, I met his son and daughter-in-law, who told me that he was the last person to drive a train over Hopton Incline. The other drivers kept stalling it, but Sam got the job done.
