North East steam workings from 52G Sunderland shed
Просмотров 10 тыс.6 месяцев назад
8mm cine film shot by me between December 1965 and the end of BR steam in the North East on 9th September 1967. This video features locomotives from Sunderland employed on coal traffic between the pits and the docks and to power stations on Tyneside and Teesside. Sunderland shed employed ex NER 0-6-0 and 0-8-0 goods engines right up to the end of steam but WD 2-8-0s and K1s were also regularly ...
Steam traction engine Providence and River Mite.

Travelling from home to film steam on the Settle to Carlisle line and Shap, Garth McLean, Raymond Atkinson and I came across this on the A66 near Greta Bridge. The loco on the trailer is the newly built River Mite which had just been completed at Clarksons of York and was travelling to it's new home at the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway. After spending some time filming this we just made it to ...
Industrial steam at South Hetton colliery Co. Durham.

8mm cine film shot by me in the early 1970s at what I believe to be the last NCB site in County Durham to use steam locomotives. (I stand to be corrected!) Well turned out Austerity type 0-6-0 saddle tanks moved coal from collieries at South Hetton and Murton much of which was destined for export at Seaham Harbour where the loaded wagons arrived by way of Stony Cut and Swine Lodge rope inclines...

8mm cine film shot by me in the final weeks of steam operation on BR in July and August 1968. The video begins with some workings from Carnforth before moving to Copy Pit and the sheds at Rose Grove and Lostock Hall. On the 4th of August there were a number of steam hauled enthusiast specials and these were filmed at Entwhistle viaduct , Turton, and Lydgate viaduct as well as other locations. B...

Eaglescliffe Brickworks Railway

In the 1960s there was a brickworks at Eaglescliffe where my dad worked as a brickmaker. He carried out a variety of tasks including managing the firing process in the kilns, boiler house attendant and mobile plant operator and I often visited him at work in the evenings or at weekends. On one such visit in early 1966 I was able to film the 2ft 6in gauge railway which transported clay from Coat...

BR Scottish Region steam in 1966

Re uploaded this video as there was a problem with image changing from colour to black and white in the middle section of the film. Hope this one is OK. Also for clarification at 20.50 there are 2 shots of Lambley on the Alston Branch which is not in Scotland but has a Scottish connection as this was the Scottish Rambler No6 Rail Tour which also visited Langholm later that day but due to poor l...
BR. Scottish region 60532 Blue Peter Waverly route excursion to Carlisle
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.7 месяцев назад
On the 8th October 1966 British Railways ran an excursion from Edinburgh to Carlisle via the Waverly route hauled by A2 60532 Blue Peter which I filmed at Carlisle with my standard 8mm cine camera. At Carlisle 41222 and 41224 were the station pilots on this occasion. After filming the special approaching Carlisle I went to Kingmoor shed where 60532 was prepared for its return journey. Steam hau...

8mm cine film shot by me showing class K1 2-6-0s from Alnmouth shed on passenger services to Alnwick in 1966. The first filming visit was in February during a heavy snow storm and includes the short run up to Alnwick when the K1 shunts the goods yard . (I had been to Alnwick in 1965 with armed with just a reel to reel tape recorder and had the privilege of a footplate trip at the invitation of ...

8mm cine film shot by me on the Settle to Carlisle line towards the end of BR steam on this route. The opening scenes demonstrate how severe the weather can be in the northern hills as a lorry mounted snow plough gets stuck in a drift near Garsdale. We had travelled to Garsdale behind the plough in order to film Flying Scotsman on the northbound Lakes and Fells rail tour from Manchester. While ...

Wonderful videos, and great inspiration for weathering the 21T hoppers on the layout I’m building
Those were the days !!!! No orange jackets, no yellow lines, no lineside ropes. We KNEW to look out and be careful. Now everyone treats us like babies.
Excellent quality of film, having now watched this it brought back many memories of living and growing up on the Island, lovely..many thanks😂
So moving and TRUE
Stunning footage of this train crossing Yarm viaduct, only a few hundred metres from where I once lived (approx. 1 mile south of Eaglescliffe).
... and my "mike" was protruding from the leading vehicle.
I was on this train, "taping" this loco along a number of stretches. 62005 spent some time in the roundhouse a few hundred metres east of Thornaby station where I worked from 1967 to 1971. The MOST kind shed-master had her moved outside the MPD so that we could photograph her in the afternoon sun. This engine quit Tees, LEADING a goods working (the 14.10 Tees to Dringhouses) and we "chased" her by road for another photograph and sound-recording... Anyway, 62005 had presented an almost priceless opportunity for photographs (regarding which I later understood that 2005 had to be in "light steam" only and be marshalled immediately behind the Class 37. Tut-tut!!!) Much to our regret, we later learned that the shedmaster had been disciplined regarding his generous action for a couple of railway enthusiasts who worked on BR Eastern Region...
Nice to see we have a bit of footage of Marley Hill during its working life
One of the things that is fascinating (to me anyway) is the sheer variety of the make up of some of the trains - there's a Bulleid pacific with green, maroon & blue/grey coaches in the rake behind. That's something that can only be seen in footage such as this. Thank you for sharing.
Cracking footage of unpolished performers. Just how twas. Thank you for putting this up!!
Excellent !
60s and the 70s , my childhood was the annual holiday on the island and the trains not the least of it . Marvellous film
I have a question, is it okay when I used the footage and sound effects from your channel because I like them, and I'll give you a credit if I use them.
Sorry the footage is not for use by others and is covered by copyright . I posted these films which were shot by me so that they were not lost and could be enjoyed by all. Peter.
@PeterHutchinson-jc6wv I see, thank you for your response.
Very good footage lovely views impressive…
Marvellous film! Loved the light engine, tender first, engine and brake van and the way you got the train and signals etc in too. Shed atmosphere 👍 Thank you!
Nice to see the film starts with a glorious Northumberland Summer ;-) Thanks for sharing!
I was a student at Sunderland Polytechnic, starting in 1984. The spring of '85 saw BR take up the last part of the Penshaw Branch to Pallion. I used to ride the track bed on my bike to where we met the Old Main Line. One Sunday I decided to continue past the coke works and Philly Sheds to New Herrington pit. Of course that day I didn't take a camera. Philly shed was then used for repair of diesel shunters, Class 11s and Sentinels with their Rolls Royce badges. It was the time of the strike and nothing was moving. Shortly after the men went back to work and I never went back. Lovely film of how it was twenty years before my bike ride.
Wait why was Flying Scotsman on a train thru there
Hi, in answer to your question It was 2nd of April 1966 and 4472 was taking the northbound SLS/MLS "Lakes and Fells" railtour from Manchester to Carlisle. We had travelled from Teesside to Garsdale by car despite the bad weather ! Peter.
I'm absolutely no expert, but I don't think I've seen footage of this era and location that can remotely compare to this. Something really impressive about those no-nonsense NER designs going about their work, even if some of them are in poor condition by this point. Thank you for the upload.
24:55 K1 doing a burnout
Great historical footage. Thanks for uploading ! Bought back some memories of the 1960's in the area.
Fantastic! Thanks for this. I remember reading about the ore trains at the time but never got to sea them, living in Lancashire.
Wonderfull filming of a long gone coal hauling everyday scene . Thank you for uploading.
Great Video of the Classic Steam Shunting the Yard - Really Enjoyed Watching!
Love that video - massive local history fan and this brings 60s life alive. Looks like it was heading on the rail track towards where Witham Hall used to be based
This is superb, ,more-so with the correct audio. It adds more to looking at those superb photos that Ivo Peters took there.
The 9f locomotives were brilliant
No sooner than they sweep something away than they yearn for it to return.
Brilliant footage, colour as well!!!!!!!!
Lovely work, Sir. Even better that you have the actual audio too. Superb.
Hi thank you Brilliant film my old man worked at south dock man and boy till he retired due to ill health Seaton and seaton top bank are just a pathway now
authentic soundtrack? nice, you can tell, it isn't that 'authentic sounds library'.
This is fabulous, thanks for sharing.
Wonderful reminder
Old friends.
Thanks so much for this fabulous film of these powerful tank engines at work
Sorry, i wish to correct part of my previous comment. The star of Bethlehem was the up distant signal on a southbound journey, not the down. Apologies.
Absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing those great memories with us. On one of your shots of a southbound train approaching Ais Gill summit, you can just see part of Berlin cabin, an old platelayers hut, and also as you panned round you show the down distant signal for Ais Gill which drivers & firemen called the star of Bethlehem!! When you saw that signal, you knew the hard work was nearly over. Thank you again.wow such memories.
I'm struck by the speed of some of the WD-hauled trains, they soon started to waggle from side to side with the action of the cylinders and then the tender and loco started banging backwards and forwards, you could hardly stand up.
Nice shots of the attractive Metro-Cammell diesel railcars - reminds me of my very first Triang train set!

What memories that film brings back, though I lived in Surbiton every year we spent a fortnight at my maternal grandparents in Railway Street, Littleburn, Langley Moor, Co Durham and I got my fill of Q6 and ex WDs not forgetting the the main liners thundering past the miners cottage we stayed in. That was late 1940s early 50s before I went into the RAF in '56.
Thank you for the film of the North East railway scene and where steam still clung on, brought back memories of Lynemouth and Ellington where at the former my parents and me stayed for the annuaul two weeks summer holidays with family. and a period of enforced schooling at lynemouth school in 1960 age 10 Due to my mother having to look after her father after a stroke. Day and night the colliery tankies could been seen and heard working coal trains to and from Lynemouth to Ellington. Mainline at Alnmouth Station too early sixties from the garden of No 1 Railway Terrace Where Uncle Dick And Meggy Lived was pure delight for me. Only when i was seventeen did i venture up to Backworth and Burradon Area to record with photography Those times in monocrome.
I remember spotting 73117 (once 'Vivien'), a very close encounter on the platform at Woking while waiting for my train Needless to say I saw many of the Merchant Navys and a majority of the West Country / Battle of Britain class
This channel has the best footage I have ever seen, it brings those days back to life. Wish we could go back in time.
07:50 Where is this place (the level crossing). it should still be discernible today
Hello, In answer to your question the level crossing is at Philadelphia. The loco No5 is taking full BR hoppers from Herrington Colliery to the exchange sidings with BR at Penshaw. I have not been through Philadelphia for some time in fact not since the loco sheds and works were demolished. Another viewer said that the site is now a housing estate! Peter.
@@PeterHutchinson-jc6wv Thanks Peter, though I think the road that went over the level crossing will still be there
Hello again. Yes you are correct , having looked on Google maps the road is the A182 from Newbottle to Shiney Row and is known locally as Philadelphia lane. When approaching from Newbottle the crossing was at the bottom of a fairly steep bank just before a terrace of cottages on the right hand side of the road. Hope this helps, Peter.
@@PeterHutchinson-jc6wv Hello again and thank you for that. I hope to visit that site sometime
Only just come across you, what a fantastic series of vids. I can relate to these through my local Notts/Derbys coal fields that were! Thank you.
Were all these mineral trains supplying power stations from the collieries, for the production of gas and electricity, and presumably coal suppliers for the domestic market????
Hello David, The railways in the North East were largely built to transport coal much of which was shipped out from ports on the Tyne, Wear and Tees. It was also supplied to industries such as Steelmaking and Chemicals. Power stations were also big users of coal. The industrial revolution was fuelled by coal and it is hard to believe that all of this has gone! Peter.
You actually got the real sound as well as being in colour, a visual document, thanks for your efforts, we would only have photos if you hadn’t taken the trouble to do this, much appreciated
Burnopfield Colliery had rather big headstocks?? My grandfather worked there for a while he always comment on that.
Hello Keith, Colliery headstocks are the towers built above the mine shafts which house the wheels over which run the haulage ropes from the winding engine to the cages carrying men and mined coal. These can be seen in some of my shots at Burnopfield colliery. Peter.
Hi great this about 10.25 please you tell me where that is
Hello, The shot taken at 10.25 is of the outbound 3 Dales Rail tour passing Wensley station en-route to Redmire on 20th May 1967. The Wensleydale railway still passes this location but I believe that the station is in private ownership and trains no longer stop here.
