  • 8mm cine shot by me in the final months of Darlington MPD including the last two A1 pacifics on standby duty. After the closure there were a number of steam workings from York MPD and a series of specials including the 3 Dales rai tour and on the main line with preserved locomotives in charge.
The video has an authentic soundtrack mostly recorded at the time of filming

Hi - excellent footage. As a 10 / 11 year old I remember seeing some of the featured "specials" including Merchant Navy 35026, 7029 Clun Castle and Jubilee 45562 (in the clip where it leaves Newcastle I'll be somewhere in the distance!!)

Beautiful signal survivals to be seen; NER l/q even at this late date. I have to wonder why that home signal was passed at 'stop' though . . .

There were still loads of NER signals around until 1982 and later.

Hi, glad you liked the video.
The location at 2.30 is Hartburn Junction Stockton.
60124 was a standby engine at Darlington MPD and because of Sunday engineering works on the ECML it was moved to Bowesfield junction where it stood for most of the day. Returning to Darlington it reversed to Hartburn and then set off chimney first towards Eaglescliffe and home.

Fantastic footage, thank you for digitising and uploading it. I feel like I've been in a time machine for the last 20 minutes. Brilliant stuff 🤩

These north east videos are great. This one takes me back to war time sitting on the stone wall outside Cleveland Brdg Co across from Bank Top with my older brother. Saw a Sentinal steam rail car once returning from the Middlesbrough line, regularly a pair of D49s heading south and A4 Dominion of New Zealand whizzing by on the outside, finally “Adam” Cleveland Bg works shunter. I believe A2 60145 N.E.R. as Darlington shed standby was the last to be withdrawn.

It was very cruel to have had there name plates removed before they reached a scrap yard
