Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray Bass with flat wound strings
just discovered this channel, could you make a video explaining the uses of the different knobs in the bass guitar please
What strings are you using? I know this was a couple of years ago?
This was a brand new bass so whatever strings come on it from the factory. If I had to guess , probably Ernie Ball Slinkys
I got the blue and gold. My first p and I absolutely love it. Especially with flats.
Sounds great to my ears, but I own two BB734a so I guess I’m use to the clear sound of the Yamaha’s. It took me a while to get use to, because I love the deep low end of the Fender P, and the Yamaha is more about a clean and clear sound. Musicman’s have way too much top end for me. I always find myself rolling off the treble completely on the MM. Great video👍🏾
Hey Aaron, I haven't tried the 734 yet. I do the same on my musicman.
Thanks Bob! Great review. I was thinking about getting this bass but not now. With a buzz and pick-ups that need changing, it seems like a $600 guitar (at best!) with $1000 added for the Fender name. I've seen and heard far less critisism for guitars that are quarter of the price, such as the Sire Marcus Miller range. It's a shame. I thought Fender were better than this.
Hey Simon, I agree! Sometimes you get a really good one though. It's up to the individual instrument. But in general, you're right. Fender could do better.
Jazz is mistakes 😂
Just bought a Ray24 in mint condition for $275. I love it!
Nice score!
It came with half-wounds, Daddario and they sound good. What are your thoughts on those?
I bought one and the neck is shit. The bass is neck heavy and green. There is a severe buzz on the A string due to fret problems I switched out bridges and it's the same. Do not buy this bass unless you want to level the frets or get another neck....
Sorry to hear that! I have played many of that model and haven't experienced those problems. I think that maybe you just got a bad one. Return it and try another.
@@BobBlackBass I'm going to level and crown the frets before I give up on it.
What temps me to buy this bass is how fat that P Pickup sounds. It’s got such a big sound, fatter than my P Bass.
Yes, it is a great tone, isn't it?
Hi is this the sterling SUB stingray 4?
Yes, they just don't call it a sub anymore.
Excellent explanation, thank you so much.
Hey, appreciate it! I'm happy it was helpful.
Hi Bob, is the neck on the above Ray 4 noticeably different from the Ray 24?
Yes. The Ray 24 is thinner. Similar to a jazz bass
Have both. Pickups can be changed so the only real difference is the support rods and better tuners and bridge. Oh and the colors. I have an olympic white am pro II P bass and a Player II P in black with maple. Both work and many bands have used both live. Truss rod adjustment is important. That’s why I sold my Vintera series and Road Worn. Truss adjustment had to be done removing the neck which is inconvenient while traveling or playing shows.
I agree with the truss rod hassle I do miss my road worn p bass. Sorry I sold it!
The colour/finish is ACE ! These basses are Killer.I love mine
One of my favourite guys who reviews basses! I've been looking at the Professional II from a Player P for a few reasons after having a player P for a few years, and thought I'd just post for anyone also maybe looking to make the jump. (I previously have also owned a 2001 I believe P bass in midnight wine), and I do own an American Jazz Professional I to compare sort of the Mexi and American. I played a mexi jazz from 2005 - 2017, so the little annoyances I had with the jazz before jumping are very similar to the P bass. I think everyone has to individually decide if it's worth the price difference. I like to record and take a bass out once a week for band practice, (play in a local big band) and we gig a few times a year to pay for more charts and our rental space. So I'm not this super traveling, touring pro bassist. Typical user. Going over thoughts on the Player P: -MIne definitely doesn't feel like 9 pounds- maybe 8 and change - can't say notice any neck dive on it either The buttercream in person is stunning. The neck (maple) is one of the most gorgeous looking necks. Super comfortable! -The input jack and the tone pot both come loose constantly! -The pickups feel off, and too muddy, or too harsh instantly. I don't tend to go past 1/2 way on this beauty. Given it's a P, not the worst thing in the world) but the top-end is super harsh, and hum a LOT with the tone rolled all the way up. They just feel on, and not as much blend options for those subtle tweaks. I ended up putting nylon tapewounds on, which masks a lot of this -The bass is never NOT in tune -Neck is super solid - no issues with needing major adustments and plays like a dream -I know the bridge isn't as nice as the American, but I can say they are so much better than the early 2000's P MIM p basses -This bass has amazing sustain -When I bought this NEW from an authorized dealer new along with a tort guard, the certified tech couldn't replace it, because the standard P bass pickguard Fender noted would work would've left me with a large gap of the body routed out near the knobs - the standard pickguard just doesn't fit this "standard bass" at all! I think it's so light because maybe they routed it funny. So I'm stuck with the ugly white stock guard which is reallly a first-world problem ;) . I think you really will either just want that next level of instrument, can afford it, jump to the Pro level. If you can't justify the price like I couldn't when I bought the player P, just know a used American or another year of American will always be waiting down the line. Keep jammin, Bob!
Hey Amanda, thanks for the input! I'm enjoying your videos! You rock!
@@BobBlackBass Thanks so much, Bob! I love what you do in showing people the true value of instruments trying to get into playing at any budget!
I have the Pro 2. It sounds much better simply due to more higher-end components IMHO, however, the Player 2 would be just as good especially if you are looking for a great sounding bass at a bargain price. Both are great basses!😀🤙🤘🤘🤘
Hey Steely, I agree.
I'm very close to buy a used one, thanks to your video. Can You believe that in Italy the Short Scale is now 888 euros (more than 900 bucks) and the long scale Stingray 24 classic is 799 euros???? The short scale is more expensive than the 34"! That's crazy!!! 😀😀😀
Hey Lucat, interesting. Is the short scale from Indonesia or USA?
SpongeBob - definitely.............
Hey Muse, I agree although the Nordy sounds very good on the Stingray
I bought this one yesterday and I really enjoy it. Thank you for sharing.👍🏾
Glad you like it!
Great video. Wonderful bass movements as well. Cheers! 💯💯👍👍🌞
Thanks Viking!
Hi Bob, great review btw I always have my luthier cut a truss rod access channel into the body unless its; an actual pre-cbs bass.
Hey, that's a good idea, they should just add it from the factory.
Hey Bob Squier has released the Squier Affinity Active bass I've seen one in GC but it was a 5 string ( I don't like 5 strings ) I was wondering have you heard of it and I hope you can get your hands on one preferably a 4 string and review it for us
Hey Marc, I've heard but haven't seen one yet. If I can get my hands on one I'll certainly review it.
@@BobBlackBass Appreciate it Bob I know your review will be unbiased that's why I suggested it to you thanks again
I would have to play them both but I’m leaning toward the player ii as I’d have money left over for resolite tuners to combat the neck diving lol
Spain in the neck literally
Are the electronics the same
Hey Chris, I'm not sure but I doubt it. The sound of the two is very close but the workmanship and quality of materials is quite noticeable
@@BobBlackBass ahh ok thanks 😊
Si Mexico 🇲🇽 MIM
Hey Bob, I've seen a few of your videos, enjoy your content. Subbed!
Appreciate it!
where did you get that pick guard its really cool
Alperious pick guard. I did a video on it.

Great video Bob. Just got the cheaper player series and good to know the difference between them. Many thanks.
Enjoy!
Hi Bob! For the price one can do better, just my op[on.
Hey Pine, I agree!
I think there may be a bit of unconscious price tag bias going on here. I’ve seen blindfold comparisons of these two instruments with professional players not being able to differentiate between American and Mexican Fender basses.
Hey Rollo, yes, the sound difference is subtle. More noticable is the feel and the quality of construction. I found in my experience that the necks of the American basses are more stable.
Very expensive though.. hear great things about them..
Hey David, yes but so punchy!
@@BobBlackBass nice.. top end stuff
I have one of these and managed to adjust the neck by just removing the pickguard and using a screwdriver. Not ideal I agree, but better than having to loosen the neck screws. I also ended up using some very fine sandpaper on the back of the neck. Feels much better now. Pickups are great on this bass.
Hey Belman, thanks for the input. I tried that method on a bass and scraped it up. Pickups are very good and period correct
Great review as always, Bob. Can I ask which combo you're playing through?
Just a acoustic B20 practice amp
@@BobBlackBass Thanks for the info 👍
Nice objective review! I haven’t played the Nate bass yet, but I’m looking for another P Bass at some point soon so this gives me an idea of what to expect should I pull the trigger on the Nate Mendel signature. Thank you!
It's a great bass. Watch some of the old Scott's bass lesson videos. He had a great sound on that bass.
Straight to the point the weight and the price make me not interested immediately but I always appreciate your no nonsense reviews thanks Bob 👍🏽
Thanks Marc!
Made in USA has a warmer tone. Player II has a twangy tone which makes it sound cheaper. I have an American Professional II Precision Bass V in the Dark Night color on the way and I think it will last me forever.
Yes, I agree.
great playing
Thanks!
Can you reveal anything at this stage about Area 51?
I'm not allowed to
Own four Fenders, mim. I just would change the pickups and the bridge for tone. And flatwounds, LaBella 760 M .
True.
Do you work at CERN, incognito, accelerating particles?
How did you know?
Got mine today. 8lb. I’m 70.
Hey Saneman, perfect weight!
Flatwound chromes are terrible anyway. For flats you want La Bella Jameson set, Thomastiks or GHS Precision flats. (I've been absolutely obsessed with flats for over 25 years now)
Yeah, I have flats on both of my main basses. Tried Thomas tics. Now using Ernie Ball flats
3:42 4:38prayer II 6:35 7:16professional II
Thanks!
Did you invent the electron microscope?
????
I have 3 fenders bass's one usa 2 Mexican. I'd have to say I really like the Mexican better . Great video 🎉
Hey Cruiseangele, yeah, sometimes it works out that way! Thanks!
I as well. You can always add pickups and Hi Mass bridge and some LaBella 760 m flats.
I have a squier i love it.
I sold my American Ultra for a Player II. Then I changed its Strings, Bridge and Pups.
Hey Stephant, I'm going to review an American Ultra P bass. I think you can get a good and versatile sound but find them too heavy. Is that why you changed?
@@BobBlackBass No, I did not like the Pickups. When recording the Bass I had a teribble high frequency that was really annoying.
Bob, how did you feel about the Player I vs. the Player II? Is it worth the upgrade?
Hey Nomoremrnice, , I didn't see or hear any difference.
Color would be perfect for a Funk player.. ya know, some people like bright comers basses to stand out some don’t. Color not to great I guess in a metal hard rock band lol
