Homesteading OFF GRID | Food Supply Disaster, Deep Sea Fishing, & Breaking a Broody Hen
We homestead alone while we take turns going on vacation. This month we're taking turns homesteading alone so we can fit in a couple summer vacations this year. Shane takes care of the homestead while Lindsey and Liam go down to Florida fishing and then we switch roles while Shane goes up north in Minnesota fishing. Shane runs into some problems with our propane freezer and needs to fix it before we lose all our frozen chickens and fish. He also discovers we have another broody hen trying to hatch out even more chicks which we don't have room for. Lindsey gets back and then takes care of the thawed-out food and also builds a broody jail in hopes to break the hen of her broodiness. All in ...

Log Cabin in the Woods - Living Off Grid | Garlic Harvest and Fishing
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 месяца назад
Homesteading inspiration and enjoying the off-grid life. We're harvesting summer garden vegetables on our homestead (garlic and chives). We preserve the garlic by letting them cure for 5 days and braiding them, and we preserve the chives by dehydrating them for storage. Summer crappie fishing on our Northern Wisconsin lakes is in full swing this time of year and we have a delicious fish fry of ...

    Have you thought about permaculture gardening? It keeps the moisture in and weeds pull out effortlessly. It also provides nutrients to the ground in turn making the veggie plants very healthy. You use less water & less effort after the layers are placed down. I had a garden that was so hard to manage until I learned about permaculture then it became a place of pure enjoyment and bliss.

    When we lived in Alabama Red Snapper was one of our favorites! Do you think the freezer wasn’t running properly because of the small 20 lb tank? I’ve read some appliances require at least a 100 lb tank so there’s enough pressure?

    I love your channel...and have a question. We're looking at buying a 1 bed, 1 bath cabin in N.WI. Where can you store canned/ dehydrated food...temperature controlled, in such a small space? The property we're considering is 400 sq. ft with no basement. I know you must have some arrangement with such a beautiful garden❤

    • @KrumriesCabin
      @KrumriesCabin 2 месяца назад

      So glad to hear you like the channel - thank you! I think it's awesome you're looking to buy a small cabin in Nothern WI. As far as food storage... we are still working on a great solution for this. What we do now is can as much food as possible so that we don't have too much to store inside the cabin. The jarred food stores very well. We also freeze a lot of food as well. We store many of the jars on the main level of the house, on the floor, under the bed in a dark space that gets no light... we have cement flooring and it stays cold. We also store the onions, potatoes, and squash under the bed - they last almost to the end of the winter. We are still working on building a root cellar in the side of the hill, that will be really awesome once we get that complete. I've toured other off grid small cabins around the area and they utilize root cellars as well, some bury 55 gallon drums for their potatoes and cover with a lot of straw. Very good questions...hope I answered them well, thanks for asking them! Have a great day!

    I love me a good fish sandwich! How do you guys handle this heat we’re having? We have a portable a/c we can run a few hours on our solar before I need help with generator. I think next year I may install a mini split. They are super efficient and don’t run the batteries down as much.

    • @KrumriesCabin
      @KrumriesCabin 2 месяца назад

      Fish sandwiches are the best! Luckily the cabin stays cool in this weather with the cement floor and the 10" logs. We don't have an a/c of course because we can't even get through many days without running the generator even without running an a/c. Luckily the heat has been pretty mild this year, and it's just so shocking how cool it stays in cabin. Nice that you're able to run an a/c when it get's really hot like in the 90s!

      @KrumriesCabin 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for the nice feedback! We don't have air conditioning, we don't have the power for it - it's been in the 80's for a few weeks with some days not even coming out of the 70s. So, not too bad... the humidity is pretty high but nothing like the humidity down south. The cabin stays so cool, the thick logs keep the heat out and the cement floor feels cold on the bare feet. It's getting into the 90s some days this week, it will get warmer but the cabin keeps it very comfortable, thankfully.
