  • Homesteading in an arctic blast of cold weather. The sun finally returns, right in time to give us enough solar power to run a heater for the chicken coop. We brave the windchills in order to complete the truck repair. The woodstove is constantly being stoked and providing a great heat for the log cabin. The woodash is used for our composting bin. We thaw out some frozen eggs from spring to make french toast with homemade bread. Nice and cozy in the cabin. Thanks so much for watching! -Shane and Lindsey Krumrie
    Bread Recipe: (Adapted from Joy of Cooking)
    Combine in a large bowl, and let stand until the yeast is dissolved, about 5 minutes:
    1/4 cup warm (105F to 115F) water
    1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
    Add, and mix well:
    1 large egg, beaten
    1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted
    2 1/2 cups lukewarm (85F) water
    1 1/2 teaspoons salt
    1/4 to 1/2 cup sugar, honey, or maple sugar
    Add:
    4 cups whole wheat flour
    4 cups all-purpose flour
    Nead the dough, allow the dough to rise in a large oiled bowl until doubled, about 1 hour, and once in 2 greased 9 x 5 -inch loaf pans until doubled, about 45 minutes.
    Preheat the oven to 350F
    Bake about 40 minutes. Bake until the crust is golden brown and the bottom sounds hollow when tapped. Remove the loaves to a rack to cool completely.

    I never known about freezing egg's. But it looks like it works. French toast for Dinner is a great idea. 💖💖

      Yes, freezing the eggs works great when you use them scrambled up in something like French toast or egg bake or something! So easy to freeze them too when you have a lot coming in. Thanks so much for watching 🙂

      Great reminder, usually we have one out there, he must have used it for something else. Thanks for watching, have a great night!

    French toast looked delicious and there is something very satisfying about being able to work on and fix your own vehicle to get them back up and running. Great video! Question, Have you tried water glassing your extra eggs you get in the spring/summer time? I just recently started doing more research on it for our own chickens/ducks for this upcoming season since we get way more than we can eat or even sell sometimes. Anyway keep up the great work!

      We haven't tried the water glassing extra eggs yet... just the freezing method since we don't get a huge extra supply. We have double the chickens this year so maybe we'll get enough to try that. Good luck on it and it's so good you're getting that many! Thanks for the nice comment, have a good night.

      Thanks for the nice comments! 28" of snow is so much, wow, you're lucky... I bet it will be beautiful out there tomorrow. Thanks for the comment on the bread, I'll post the recipe in the video description within the next couple days, no problem! Have a good evening and take care.

    Love the bread, Ive gotten lazy over the years and now just do the old no knead and 3 ingredient bread - actually made a loaf yesterday with the intent on doing french toast today . but instead just toast and scramble, perhaps tomorrow

    Nice job on the truck Shane! Nasty cold lately, finally putting a dent in our firewood supply.

      Thanks! It sure is putting a dent in the firewood supply. The lakes are making ice like crazy though right now, there's so many ice fishing shacks out on the harbor in Superior, we just saw today. Have a good night.

      Yes, it was quite cold, made it more challenging for sure. There really wasn't going to be a break from the cold until next week so it needed to get done! Thanks for the nice comments, have a good night.

    There is no carbon in ash, and since it is very alkaline, a large amount can stop the composting process.

    • @KrumriesCabin
      @KrumriesCabin  8 месяцев назад +1

      When I add the ash to the bin it helps break it down so quickly, there is a good relationship of some kind going on there! I know it is very alkaline and I think my compost must be very acidic because it's a good match! I add coffee grounds daily so that might be why it's so acidic, not sure... I do think there is carbon in ash though too. Thanks for your comment and it's a good reminder that the wood ash should be added only in amounts needed by your compost b/c of the alkalinity of the wood ash. Have a good night, and thanks for watching.

    Great job on the fuel pump! I feel your pain, I had a Chevy minivan that I replaced 2 fuel pumps in, the fist one I just bought the pump off Amazon that last about 6 months then the second one I bought the OEM whole assembly and replaced that one in the winter in Michigan so I know it’s not fun but glad you got the truck up and running! The French toast looked really good, I haven’t had that in years! Great job guys! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼

    • @KrumriesCabin
      @KrumriesCabin  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, we bought the online ones too... the first one lasted a year or two and now we'll see how long this one lasts. At least they're cheap, like $60 compared to like $250 - this time, we're not going to run the gas any lower than a quarter tank to see if that helps. Thanks for the comments! Have a good night!

    cut out the floor of the bed of the truck above the fuel pump and never have to drop the tank again you can put the cutout piece back on with hinges
