Under Heavy Fire
Casper Van Dien stars in 2001s ‘Under Heavy Fire‘ also known as ‘Going Back‘ in some regions. Directed by Sidney J. Furie, the film has an interesting premise with Van Dien playing Captain Ramsey, a US Marine Corps Vietnam War veteran, who accompanies a documentary crew as they go back to Vietnam with members of his old Company as they attempt to find out exactly what happened when he did (or maybe did not) cause an accident that caused the death of troops under his command. This makes for a film that is trope and cliche heavy with an ending that must be seen to be believed…

Admittedly all of these ones are TV mini series but I think a TV mini series has more time to look at a subject with more depth. And if you like “Rogue Heroes “ you would definitely like “Heroes “ and “Heroes” two about the operations of Z special against Singapore harbour in 1943 - 1944.

  • @scotttaylor7767

My book to move list would be “ My brother Jack “ Tv series slightly better than book. “1915” the TV series is definitely better than the book. And actually makes more sense! Lol. And “The last Bastion “ if you wonder why we Aussies hate Churchill it’s not just over Gallipoli! Lol. It’s the fall of Singapore in 1942 and Churchill diverting the 7th division of the AIF to Burma without telling us. Lol. And finally “Heroes” the commando raids on Singapore operation Jaywick in 1943. Staring Jason Donovan would you believe! Lol. A bit better than the book which is historically inaccurate.

Other obscure Vietnam war tv shows you might want to consider “Sword of Honour “ not the British one. But one made in Australia in 1986 about a Duntroon cadet who goes to Vietnam in 1966. And his relationship with his girlfriend who is in the protest movement. And the Nicole Kidman series Vietnam made in 1987. Much higher production values and a better script. Filmed in Thailand in 1986.

Loved the movie. BUt I am slightly biased. They shot on and recieved support from the museumship «D/S Hestmanden» which I am very fond of. She is a survivor of two world wars and still sails in the summer. Those of us in the Norwegian museumship community gets a big giggle when She comes on screen. The film felt a bit «meh» though. The fates /treatment afterwards of what we call «the war sailors» is still a topic that draws controversy.

Not a movie but Generation War is overrated. As for movies Lone Survivor, Imitation Game, 1955 Dunkirk, 2022 All Quiet on the Western Front and Sink the Bismarck, just to name a few. On your comment of Zulu Dawn I think one of the reasons it doesn't grab is because we know all these men are going to die as well there are too many characters are spread out while in Zulu it's compact.

The trailer didn't grab me, but I decided to give the movie a chance when it came on stream, and though it was fun and the acting good, I found this movie a lost opportunity. It's just a lesser, Inglorious Basterds and Dirty Dozen and just keeps running the myth of British commandos and other special forces in WW2 being recruited from prisons. Not to mention, the whole claim of Ian Fleming basing James Bond off of Cavell's character is false from what I could find. And the worst part of the film is when all the high ranking officers are begging Churchill to surrender in 1942. I think I got a headache from all the fadepalming I did.

Here's A wonderful story my late great grandmother always used to tell me. One day after dropping off my grandfather in school, she had some trouble with the car on a small back road near Neath. She's alone, cold, panicking and Wondering what on earth she's going to do. At that moment a long silver car with a figurehead on the bonet (either a Bentley or a Rolls, it used to change every time she told the story) with a chauffeur at the wheel comes around the corner and stops alongside. A voice from the back seat says "is there anything we can do to help my dear?". Out step Richard Attenborough and Simon Ward. They give the car a look over (neither of them know anything about cars it seems) so the chauffeur ends up coming out and getting the car going in about 5 minutes. Must have been on their way to film the train scenes for the movie. As we only live about 5 minutes from the location it was filmed. Every time Richard Attenborough or Simon Ward came on the TV or was mentioned she'd tell this story with a huge smile on her face. It's one of my favourite childhood memories of her.

Great review of a film that deserves to be much better known. I love its authenticity, the cast, the equipment the vehicles. It gives a good representation of the airborne division and its different elements. There is a strong ulster element in the cast reflecting Brian Desmond Hurst's background but this again is authentic as apparently the 2nd Battalion had a strong element from the Royal Ulster Rifles (Martin Middlebrook Arnhem 1944). While sometimes the dialogue is a bit stilted the authenticity of how the soldiers move and act in battle not having the drama injected into most war movies. When you compare to actual combat footage its much more realistic. You should run a show comparing ABTF and this one to bring it to more peoples attention. Enjoyed your chat.

Sutherland was well known in Canada for playing Doctor Norman Bethune, not once, but twice. Once in a television docu-drama on the CBC and then in 1990 in a high profile theatrical production. The film co-stars Helen Mirren as Bethune's wife and covers Bethune his early career in Montreal, fighting to introduce socialized medecine, his participation as a medic during the Spanish civil war in 1936, all the way into China during WWII where he died of blood infection.

While it's a product of its time with all the good and the bad, you just have to watch the beach landing scenes with the grand aeral shots provided by the Luftwaffe pilots flying over to appreciate what an achievement it was. Hundred and hundereds of extras LCTs and other craft seen from the air. Private Ryan skipped over the breadth of the day.

  • @scotttaylor7767

It’s an ambitious movie but suffered from the time it was made (1962). So compared to saving private Ryan it’s a very sanitised view of Omaha beach. And the longest day suffered from too many stars I think.

But I did like Masters of the air it was a great story well told. And did justice to the men of the 8th airforce. My only criticisms are small ones. (1). Not enough time on Rosie. His story is a bit rushed. And (2). Crosby having an affair with a SOE agent in Oxford was a bit distracting in my opinion. (3). Operation thunderclap the raids on Dresden and Berlin in February 1945. Could have been looked at in more detail. The book of the series devoted at least two chapters to it. (4). The politics of the bombing campaign- Eaker was sacked because of the high loses in 1943. That was never referred to or Le May visiting the 100th because of moral problems. (5) No sight of the Me 262 Jet fighters in 1945 ? It would have been nice if the series had looked at them and if the jets were a game changer for the Germans. But apart for my nerd criticisms I thought this was an excellent series ( I actually thought it was better than The Pacific!).

This series gets progressively worse. If it isn't the unlikable characters the terrible CGI the script written by ten year olds with every crew member screaming at the top of their voices despite having wired Comms. The air battles appear to have the structure of a Star wars movie with spectacle over any sense of realism. And will they stop this nonsense about the US not hitting civilian targets it is well known that the accuracy was little better than bomber command. The creators of the show appear to want to ignore the reality in the hope of painting this pretty picture of the eighth not inflicting many civilian casualties..I don't have issue with the casualties as difficult as it is to stomach it was a war after all and these things happened
