Devon Call Change video's.
The emphasis of Devon Call Change ringing is based on simplicity but our aim is to produce quality striking on any number of bells.
On my channel I hope to showcase our style of ringing not only from inside the ringing chamber but also how the bells sound when listening from the church yard.
I do hope you enjoy listening.

The church bells of St Paternus, South Petherwin, Cornwall
Prior to the 2012 restoration of the bells, South Petherwin were notoriously hard work and odd struck. Taylor's did a good job with these, the bells are by a mixture of founders but blend together very well. The six bells were tuned in 2012 and the 2nd was replaced with a new bell cast by Taylor's. They hang in an oak frame by Harry Stokes dated 1897.
Treble - 5-2-11 in D
2nd - 6-3-3 in C
3rd - 6-2-24 in Bb
4th - 8-0-9 in A
5th - 10-0-23 in G
Tenor - 12-2-25 in F
They now go well and are an excellent sounding ring of 6, the acoustics internally could be made better, but overall, they are worth seeking out.

The rather squat tower with its lancet windows suggests it dates from the early 13th century and houses a ring of six bells. The ring are mainly the work of J, C & W Pennington and dated 1770. The Treble cast by William & Charles Pannell dated 1835 and the 4th re-cast by John Taylor in 1956. Taylor's rehung the bells with all new fittings in 1939, the frame, which is cast iron, is dated 1940. T...

The 6 bells at Linkinhorne are mainly the work of John Pennington from 1805, the 3rd re-cast in 1923 by John Taylor of Loughborough. At the same time, Taylors rehung the bells in a new cast iron frame, with new ringing fittings, and tuned all six. The bells are very fine sounding but the tall granite tower and long rope draught make them tricky to say the least, mainly due to the clarity of the...

The six bells form a very pleasant ring, they are rung from the large ground floor ringing chamber and handle extremely well. The bells are from various founders, but they blend together very well and are enough of a challenge to keep you focused. They are rung from a ground floor ringing chamber and although they are tough to strike well, they are worth the effort, I really like them as the bells are really clear and in your face, a good old fashioned growly set of bel...

The 6 bells were all cast by The Whitechapel bell foundry in 2006, replacing a ring of six by various founders. The new ring hang in a galvanised steel frame by Nicholson Engineering. Apart from that and some odd struckness they handle well and are worth a visit. ...

Great striking !
nice
I have been to all of the Petherwins in Cornwall but not rung them.
Good dancing Corban😂 Lovely sounding peal of bells, actually and good striking too. It sounds a tad stiff for me, but each to their own👍
Cheers for this! Change ringing is something I miss so much from over home… just not a thing here. That was so uplifting! (Before dawn on a very cold morning after a night so perishing as could freeze the balls off a pawnshop; the kettle isn't even up to the boil yet… but still, for having just heard this, I can't stop smiling!) You've already made my day! Ta again!
Taylors done a good job? They sound superb.
@DevonRingerEwan They are decent, they also don't go like little light bells, they don't turn too quickly either. The installation looks very smart. They never used to be that great, very odd struck and the treble was always a very shrill, so the tuning has worked wonders
@ryantrout6094 not too slow turning I hope.... somebody, I think it was Taylors, hung a light 6 at Southville in Bristol and my god they turn way too slow for that weight the Sally's bounce so slowly you can't get your bell square
@@DevonRingerEwan certainly not too slowly, just about right for ringing something lighter I'd say. I hate ringing light bells where they turn far too quickly
Hello Ryan. These are lovely Taylor bells Not being a Devon call change ringer, dk you always rung up, do call changes then ring down? or do you ring, set the bells then rimg again. Also unlike method ringing where youring different methods plus different amounts of changes , twi popular lengths being a 1260 or 5040 ,what is the maximum length of time Devon call changes ring. Also what would be the heaviest tenor ypu could pull up in peal, i know you often have 3 or even 4 on the tenor.
@Steven_Rowe In competitions we always ring up, directly into chanes and then ring down, on practice night we may not. We certainly tend to ring up once or twice an evening and stand the bells the rest of the time. There are lots of different variations to call changes, the most prevalent are the 60 on 3rd's (66 changes) or the 120's that some towers use, we tend to go for shorter, more musical touches. There have been 2 or 3 full call change peals (5040) but this takes twice as long as a method peal would, simply because we don't change hand and back stroke. I hope this helps.
@Steven_Rowe As for the heaviest Tenor rung up in peal single handedly, I've personally rung up 23cwt, but that bell had recently been rehung and went pretty well, I also had some very good ringers in front of me, you need a good treble ringer. I know that the old Tenor man at South Tawton was a large chap and didn't like having a strapper, he would put up 25cwt bells on his own and do it well, alot depends on your weight/strength but also technical ability. These days, around a ton is enough, but I always feel if you want a really good rise, then anything around 19cwt and above requires a strapper.
@@ryantrout6094 thanks Ryan, all good info. I actually saw a video just a few moments ago where a lady was talking to you regarding Devon call changes. I know my dad called it cartwheel and in London we used to try it for some fun. When done properly it sounds amazing. I have often wonder could a method ringing band do method ringing with closed leads and the perfect uniform striking It would be a challenge, especially on methods where the tenor was turned in.
Nice peal! Good video!
I love zis set of bells, zey are werry pleasant to ze ear.
Nice to hear the full peal again. Very nice ringing I thought
@@DevonRingerEwan cheers, I was pleased with it, 1st half was better than 2nd, DSM's 2nd half was top notch, close run thing but an enjoyable day, one of the best in the last few years
@@ryantrout6094 It was indeed. I managed to get a little ring once all the teams had rung🤣 any idea where it will be next year?

Hi Ryan, a distant relative here in Somerset. We share the same great grandfather bell ringer William of Over Stowey.
Do you have a family tree to verify this? I have no idea who William Trout of Over Stowey was. Regards, Ryan
@@ryantrout6094hi Ryan, I may have had a senior/blonde moment lol! I thought I had read on an internet search that you had mentioned a William Trout but I think I was actually reading a very old comment of my own on a podcast you did. Anyway, would be good to figure out the family connection anyway as we are both Trouts and descend from Devon.
@@dawnpetteford6726 it is interesting
@@ryantrout6094 who is your dad, grandad and I’ll see if I can figure out where they might be on the tree. But yes I have a great grandfather who was a bell ringer for decades.
@dawnpetteford6726 my dad Is Roger, but their father left them when my dad was 14 and moved to Gloucestershire I think, somewhere near Dursley.
Lovely ringing and bells. What is making that thumping noise? Not that it spoiled your beautiful ringing, it rather added to the rhythm!
We thought it was one of the ropes knocking on the guide or on a flapper board perhaps
Lovely sounding peal of bells especially as the back 6. Lovely striking as always, will look forward to hearing your peal at Kentisbeare on Saturday 👍
I'm hoping we can re-create something like this on Saturday, but who knows, up against lots of good teams and although Kentisbeare are nice, they will pose problems
@ryantrout6094 Kentisbeare are nice bells mind but I have had a few problems with them myself. Still, best tower picked for a final for a while.

@DevonRingerEwan yes, I will be, just haven't had much time recently
Ryan, nice striking pleasure to listen to.
Thanks for the kind comment, Bob

Hi. I hope Roger is OK? Haven't seen him for a while 😊
Dad is fine, but has stepped aside this year
Lovely little 8 they are!!!!!
Not the best sounding peal. Most people don't really care about the sound but I find I don't enjoy the ringing as much if they sound bad. Well done 👏
The a lovely tone for there age but heavy 6.
Shaugh Prior always win absolutely brilliant they are.
Not always mate, and we haven't come up against Combeinteignhead or the mighty Down St Mary yet this season. From what I've heard DSM are ringing very well and will be hard to stop.
@@ryantrout6094 yeah i know 😉 but i prefer your team better than the others & yes as you got Down St Mary & Kingsteignton as well as Combeigntenhead there a really really good team. Everyone says Kingsteignton are always winning on the 8s as the captain there as won on every bell very very talented that.
These sound really nice, lovely striking too
Not the easiest, as you will hear, plenty of errors in this. Appreciate your comment
still very good ringing👍
A rarebut beautiful sound👌👌👌✌️❤️🇬🇧🙏

The rope layout looks like they are hung in an 8 bell frame?? Lovely tone but look tricky.
These are one of my favourite sixes but wow funny full circle ring. Great video.
Blinding bit of ringing. I've not seen people ring with a coil before. I'd have a knot, but what do I know?
Beautiful bells and the sequences are so clearly defined. Thank you.
Great video, they seem great. They keep you listening
I've rung there 5 years ago on a trip with my team Berrynarbor & they don't go to bad but lovely bells.
Hmm. Warner bells dont really appeal to me. 😂
I've not rung there i was but couldn't get hold the captain on his house phone.
sorry to hear that
I've been there two & there lovely bells they are the newest 6 in Cornwall. Apparently they were nice before.
Brilliant video & i've been there but not rung.

These ringers are a very very top best team from Shaugh Prior & thanks for the video ryan 😊 they go nice these bells!!.
Very nice bit of ringing, thanks for posting Ryan. Hope you enjoyed your visit and outing.
Many thanks, excellent day
Tidy bit of top ringing. Maybe a handful of faults if being very picky. 👍🔔
How often do the bells ring like this?
Depends where you are in the world, if you are in Devon, this sort of ringing will happen most days of the week at different villages and towns
Amazing!
The striking is really good, excellent ringing. I forgot how the Cornish striking doesn't have a slight gap/pause between the lead and tenor.
That pitch reminded me of Yealmpton, 2nd overtook the treble on 1st pull. These seem alright.
I'd say our treble man didn't quite go away quick enough at the start
@ryantrout6094 yes as the 2nd and third are in the correct space, at first I thought it was the 2nd too tight
Mesmerising watching and listening .
Landulph thought that was near St Martin By Looe & there quite nice sounding sixes out there & just listen to this striking my favourite when it's kept like that awwwww beautiful!!!!!.
Thanks for listening
