- The ring of 8 bells of St Andrew's Church, Buckland Monachorum, was last overhauled by Gillett and Johnston in 1947. During this restoration, the bells were augmented to 8 with the addition of 2 new trebles and a Tenor. The bells hang in a 2 tier cast iron frame with bells 1, 2 & 6 above. The Tenor which is a good sounding bell, weighs in at 15-3-5 and is tuned to the key of E. Bells 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 are by Christopher and John Pennington and are dated 1723 and are all listed.
The bells are extremely odd struck and are not helped by a wobbly tower, having said all that, if you get them and you're up for the challenge, they are a very rewarding ring of bells. This video was taken on Saturday 6th January, and was part of a days ringing, which included other towers in West Devon. Ringers in this piece of ringing from Treble to Tenor - William Carew, Sam Massey, Jenny Sparling, Alban Forster, Stephen Herniman, Ian Fielding, Graham Sharland and Ryan Trout.
A pleasure to have you all at our tower. Thank you for the video!
I love to see you visit Deeping St James in Lincolnshire, they are lovely bells for this sort of ringing on.
Nice, didnt know these were a heavy 8, i just thought they were a light 6.
They are quite a heavy 8. Lovely tone.
the frames are also by gillett and johnson
also the 7th sounds a little oddstruck
I can confirm it is as it's usual ringer on Sundays!
