Today I'm going to do something fun. I have recently found this Lego set: 6043 Dragon Defender from 1993. The special thing about this box is that it is still unopened. And today I'm going to open it especially for you and we can see together what this set looked new in 1993. For many collectors this is sacrilege because you normally don't open a sealed set. After all, it is a collector's item ...

    I have a personal anecdote about the garage set! I was given one as a Christmas (?) present. We were staying at my grandparents' house in a small village. The house was very old, and the little guest bedroom I slept in could only be accessed through another bedroom. Anyway, to keep me quiet when I woke up on the big day, I was allowed to have one or two small presents in the room, for me to open when I woke up without disturbing any of the adults. Either there was no electric light in the room, or I wasn't tall enough to reach the switch, so I put the set together in near darkness, with just the early morning light coming through a small window. Because of the dim light, I actually thought the garage was blue until I got to see the completed set in proper light later in the morning. I was so confused! 🤣 As well as allowing for more creativity, I think there would have been a simple commercial reason for the garage having two rectangular baseplates: it meant the set could be sold in a smaller box. Retailers wouldn't be happy with a small set that required a larger box. I also had the snack bar set. I think the sign got snapped at some point, a problem with those signs and presumably the reason they stopped using them. There was also a set of assorted road signs that I had, and I think one or two of those also got broken over time. I was fairly careful with my Lego, but I was lucky to have a lot of it, and when you're really playing with it all it only takes one step for an easily breakable piece to get stepped on...

    By coincidence, I was starting to write my comment when you showed the Snack Bar, which I was going to mention. I think this set was intended as an updated replacement for that earlier set. By the way, in (British) English, that type of tape is called parcel tape. Duct (or gaffer) tape is something else. Thank you for showing this nice little set. Although it's a shame the box wasn't in the best condition, having it at all is really a bonus. I can't have been unusual in getting rid of the boxes for my small sets when I was a child back then! Sadly, although I kept all my instruction leaflets and booklets, I had to throw them away several years ago, as mould had got in to where they were stored.

      yes that is also a possibility of course, but in this case it was still a lot of tape. Plus I wanted to do another restoration project. I did not expect that with this semi-transparent tape that is of the lighter type, everything would suddenly come loose. I know that now if I still have such boxes.

    There is small building mistake you made in the roof, step 9, where you place the 1x6 bricks next to the the other row of bricks and not leave a gap. That is why they don't support the 2x3 slopes and the roof tries to collapse when you place the top row of slopes. But great video and shows how sellers are trying to scam buyers with sets missing parts and wrong parts.

    There something in this set that I love and it's still on my wishlist. The exterior is so great that I want to build a little towm made only of those types of houses, some kind of suburban area. Minus of it is this set interior is very very poor :/

    • @henrysvintagetoys
      @henrysvintagetoys 10 дней назад

      you are right if you compare it with sets of today. and I often comment that there is little decoration, but here I have not done that, because it is still not too bad, a stove, chairs, transparent table with lamp, beds, ... There are really quite a few sets, especially castle and pirate set where there is literally nothing of decoration in a certain space, so this one for me is ok 🙂. I think that this was the way of working in the 80s. the available budget had to be shifted very hard to design a generally nice set in the first place, of which decoration is somewhat secondary. I think the outside decoration is nice and successful here, just like with Riding stable where the baseplate is full with lots of things outside.

      I'm of the same opinion because the Cape Cod House is in my opinion one of the most creative Legoland sets I've seen to this day. It should be No. 10 though not No. 74. A very obscure choice of number.

    • @andrewgwilliam4831

    Henry thanks for another great video. I was meaning to ask you about your lego collection period - from the playlist is it 70-96? how come you stop at 96 when I think town continued till 99 or were there v few sets then? my favourite period is 78-84 but I like a few things in the late 80s and the harbour stuff from 91

    • @henrysvintagetoys
      @henrysvintagetoys 17 дней назад

      that is actually a very interesting question. Originally I had the idea to only collect the boxes from my birth year 1980 until when I stopped playing with them effectively and that must have been in 1994. But actually I thought that before that in the 70s there were also nice things released such as the castle sets including the yellow castle and also after 1994 there were still nice boxes released. Actually I then drew a line for myself that I collect from the first year that the minifigs came out, in 1975, then without limbs and smiley until the year 2000 I have now determined because there were also nice castle sets or subthemes released in the years 1998. Everything also depends on what I come across on my path. The large part will still remain 80s, mid 90s with sometimes a set before or after. It is always nice to show something from the 60s for example. But I don't actually collect modern Lego from the 2000s and later

    A better solution is to build a time machine, go back to before the person puts the tape on the box. Intervene and become a hero! You're welcome :)

    One of the best toys ever! I spent many, many hours building and rebuilding this one. An iconic Lego set.

    Lego was fun back then. Mostly simple, blocky parts simply stacked on one another--and a whole lot of imagination. Now, Lego sets are more like model kits for people who don't want to build actual model kits. Nice to see this old gem!

      @@henrysvintagetoys I was born in Slovenia, which was part of Yugoslavia in the 80s. At that time, LEGO was almost not sold in our stores, so I was very surprised and happy to find this set in one of the local stores. LEGO bricks could only be bought in Yugoslavia by foreigners in duty-free shops that were located around the country, mainly for foreigners or Slovenians who lived and worked in Germany, Austria and other Western countries, who were coming home from . In the second half of the 80s, the rules were no longer so strict, so toys such as LEGO bricks and toys from the USA (such as Masters of the Universe, M.a.s.k., Bravestarr etc.) were also on the shelves for citizens.

    You are doin the right thing, LEGO (and other things) are worthless if just boxed up. Thanks for sharing the experience. I have fond memories opening those bags as a child.
