This was the best present I ever had as a young child. I was 8 when I received this for my birthday. Im 42 now, but still have it stored. Used to take that plane everywhere!
@henrysvintagetoys Thank you for the trip down memory lane and going into detail about the parts. Was interesting to learn how some parts were old and rare, some were new and innovative and how some were potentially unique to this set (the flight board?). It seemed like such a big set at the time due to the footprint, but looking back, I see that they really did skimp on the pieces and features. But we were 80's kids, so we were used to using our imagination.
I really miss when LEGO used to have that inlet, and the box itself had those windows, you could see the pieces before opening it and for me this was a very exciting thing to see at the toy store. Also that early 90’s sets had another identity, the amount of pieces was limited so the sets had to adapt to that limitation, now are hundred of new pieces that make the sets more realistic, but that boxy shape became a signature for the brand
@ I still have one of those sets that survived cause it was stored in a box at my grandparents house. It’s the 6539 go karts set from 1995, despite its not a big or special one, it’s the last one from my childhood at the 90’s so it’s one of the treasures from my collection
Nice video! Bought this set as a young teenager with money I made with cleaning the house etc. I always loved it but your comparison with the 80's version is spot on!
From around 1995 through 1991 Lego was my entire life as a kid. They were all I ever wanted for any occasion then, and I built a huge city in that time. And yes, I did have both of the airport sets, and remember getting this one in 1990. But my family wasn’t really “rich”. Just regular middle class. I used to take the planes, and have them hanging from the ceiling on fishing line as if they were flying. So much fun!
I got this Lego set in Christmas of 1991 when my family moved into our new construction house. It was my first Lego set I built in my new bedroom. My dad was so psyched at how cool the passenger jet was. So many good memories. The previous Christmas I got the Lego Shell Parking garage.
Hey Henri! Erwin uit België! I have this exact set, my parents gave me this when I was a kid. This was my big gift after a school’s year. It served as the basis of my space station for years. I still have the plane, I couldn’t break it up.
Never had this set, but I coveted it as a child. I actually prefer the design of the newer plane; the "T-tail" looks much more realistic on a plane with fuselage-mounted engines than on a plane with wing nacelles. Remnicsent of a DC-9/717.
I get the 1985's airport in 1991 (!!!), as a present from my grandpa. I still think is the better version, so I agree with you: this is wide-spacer and "glassy", but I think it was a way to use less bricks... However, what an amazing way to open the new year!
I was hoping for this video to upload on this rainy sunday! I have been waiting for this one. One of my favorite things about this set is that the cover image on the box is actually a pov of a minifigure! I cant think of many other lego photo's with this first person minifig perspective and I love it! It makes the whole scene even more intriguing. I would love to know of any other pictures that share this pov. Thank you for the wonderful videos as always Henry!
I remember all the new pieces this set came with. The airplane has two 1x2x2 single windows, while the other five are 1x2x4 double windows. I thought that was really neat. I didn't see those single windows again until the 6375 Trans Air Carrier.
Happy New Year, Henry! I was amazed when you said all those base plates came with the set! If this set had been available when I was a child, I would've been very happy with it as a present. That earlier set also looks good, but I think I prefer the newer building. I would guess that the "fancy" pieces ate into the overall budget quite a bit, so perhaps that plus general inflation meant they had to cut corners elsewhere. I've heard that modern sets are designed to fit a predetermined cost, and perhaps that was also true back then.
Happy New Year! It's interesting to think about how the design and pricing of LEGO sets have evolved over the years. You're right, those base plates are a real treasure!
I have this one and really like it. I believe they also gave quite a few extras (versus the build instructions) of the transparent colored 1x1 round for the runway lights to give option to switch up the light indicators if you want. Although maybe that was more to let them do that party stage alternate build on the back of the box 😄
Good review! I like the 6597: Century Skyway Airport, released in 1994, the best, but you could build a nice big one with all three. What I can't find on RUclips is the first Airport set that had a special base plate, released around 1970-1971.
I just had set 6392,but I remember seeing the 'deluxe' set in the shops here in Britain in the early 90s.In my opinion the helicopter is far better in set 6392.
The helicopter I feel is desined to evoke Bell 47, Alouette II, and other similar light helicopters. The bulous glass cockpit and the frame tail assembly are hall marks of this school of design. How at home those designs are at an Internatinal Jetport is of course a separate issue.
I thank this is a really good update to the one in 1985 and I have the airport from 1985 it is a fun set and today I built Lego set 6393 big rig truck stop from 1987 and it is a really good set and I found it at bricks and minifigs and buy the way I don't know if you have bricks and minifigs in beljem but I thank you should check a bricks and minifigs out some time they have new and old sets!
J'ai toujours le 2ème set aéroport avion incomplet, aéroport jaune manque juste la parabol,l hélicoptère presque pareil juste modifier, plus la boîte depuis très longtemps
Yes but if you don't buy on ebay and search and hunt on it on other places you can get it for 125 à 140 euro with box and manual, wich is honest for al the great parts you get. There are really some niece pieces in the set.
This was the best present I ever had as a young child. I was 8 when I received this for my birthday. Im 42 now, but still have it stored. Used to take that plane everywhere!

somehow I think this set is an perfect asset to all Paradisa sets. Like this one is just an airport in Paradisa island :)
Great. Thank you for watching the video.
Got this one on my 6th birthday in ‘90. Now it’s the central piece of my kids’ Lego city 😊
very cool story!
I got this one on my 90th birthday in '06. 😀

I got both of those airports when they were released. It was one of my builds.
Very good! In that time they where both expensive to have! Great!
I absolutely had that set when I was a kid 🥹
It' a legendary set!
