Practicing Skagit Casting Is Mandatory!! Especially If You Use Heavy Flies!

My fly casting has taken a bit of a step back as of late so I brought you along to watch what I do to get things sorted out! The biggest take away from casting skagit lines is to watch that anchor! The anchor is pretty much the end all and be all of the spey casting world. I have to still get in the habit of watching that anchor more. When I do, then I shoot darts all day long! The Confusing World Of Skagit Heads

When I first got into the two handed world I was so confused when it came to choosing a skagit fly line. They can in all sorts of weights, lengths and profiles. I listened to the rod manufacturers recommendation and did okay with it. After awhile, I noticed that I was working too hard to cast. After doing and exhaustive amount of research. I came upon the real reason short skagit heads cast so ...
The Best Guide Fly I Have Ever Used: The Bad Hair Day Variant

This fly is a variant of the popular Dave Pinczkowski fly named The Bad Hair Day. The original Bad Hair Day is amazing but I put a collar on this only to give some shoulders in the current and it worked beyond my expectations! This works so well in low and clear weather you're not going to be sorry you tied it!

Awesome tube fly substitute
A golf is a nice car. It has all the new things in it. It's shiny. It's relatively safe. Fast if you want. Nicely put together inside. Comfy. And cheap enough. Why would someone want to get a Porsche? .......
couldn’t we just easily tie this pattern on a short shank? I just don’t like the idea of Hooks dangling way off the ass end of a fly. I mean, we need look no further than Kelly Gallup to know that fish will always hit the head. They don’t want whatever they’ve eaten, stuck backwards in their throat with its dorsal fin hung up.. great work great video. I’m not trying to be confrontational I’m just wondering what the need for the hook hanging so far off the back is when the fish is gonna slam the head of that fly.. if there’s an insight that I’m missing then please let me know..
Title says pressured waters. There’s a reason that hooks at the end of the fly.
Absolutely you can use a shank. I use this for steelhead fishing. When swinging this fly it is more effective tied on a shank due to the down and across presentation. Better hook-set, less fouls. If you strip this pattern then it’s better on a 2461 diachi BUT!! I tie them in size 2 and larger for that. Hope this helps🙂
I really like your attitude! Experiment with different components that are readily available to maximize the fun. I started fly fishing last September and just had a ton of fun today trying to do some single handed Skagit casts with my #7 rod. The fly I used was sure not intended to attract any fish as that would interfere with my casting practice.
Thanks for the comment! Good on ya for getting out and practicing. It’s a pile of fun, just wait till you get a grab!
Why the thunk?
Just helps distribute the craft fur a bit more. Also a habit of mine.
Love that knot. What yellow nippers are you using ?
Those are Loon branded nippers
Thanks for being g objective, very helpful.
Kudos 👏 most wouldn't mention the 1 that inspired them,awesome simple tie,it will swing & work,tight lines & bent rods 🤙 🇺🇸
Oh yeah man! Feenstra’s patterns get me on fish and definitely inspired my fly tying! Best of luck out there and thank you for watching 🤘
Good for you acknowledging feenstra. Classy
Spey casting is so beautiful..but if you’re two handed over head casting in the surf throwing a 4/0 I generally just wait on the back cast and my hands following back as well creating no slack what’s so ever. Otherwise it’s game over. I also wait and do it two times to create higher line speed if that makes any sense. I’m def going to get a Spey set up and tinker at my local rivers awesome video
Gotta keep the skills sharp man, practice is required. And if you’re new and just out practicing take the hook off. Safety first.
Massive tip! When i started years ago I used yarn. Was so scared of that hook!! Hahaha. Thanks for watching
Looks like single hand rod would suffice just fine in that creek. Spey rods are fun tho.. I like using them in really big water
I agree. But switch rods are fantastic on these waters, easier to mend. When if first started out I used a single hand skagit here. Still effective but that switch rod👌
I’m a switch rod whore too. Don’t worry.
@ haha!!
Thanks for another great video. Once again, zero ego. Really appreciate your style. (I'm leaving that in the video) 🤘🏻😂🤘🏻
You’re welcome! Just happy that hook found my jacket! Haha!
Awesome video. Congrats to the fish 👍👊
I have yet to jump into the Spey world. I think I will soon. Likely my first foray will be on Puget Sound beaches for sea run cutthroat when the tide is high and there's no room for a back cast. Great advice and nice fish!
Casting practice is essential when it comes to casting heavier flies, the best way also is to utilize continuous motion
I think there's a lot of room for improvement. Try to pratice Snap T, and perfect your anchor placement, your heavy set up is able to cast over 100 feet.
@@loomi47 always can improve! 100ft you say eh? Never caught a fish at 100ft out with a skagit but have caught several in 20-50ft! If you cast too far just for the sake of it. You’re casting not fishing 😉
Anchor placement is off, line is too far out bring it closer to you, rod tip is way too high before the sweep you're losing energy, d loop not formed fully
@@ricksmith3571 thanks for the tips rick! Do you happen to have some video links of your casting I can watch for reference? Appreciate it 🤘
I do not kiddo. Too old for all the tech gadgets but if you make sure the tip of your rod is touching the water before the sweep you are gonna generate 30% more power. Considering the anchor is placed 45 degrees a rod length away from you. Cheers
That would be me wearing the fly!
@@jamesmurphy4431 hahaha!! There’s nothing more exciting than feeling that “thwack”!! 😆😆
I think your casts look great. Keep working at it. Thank you for putting this out there,
@@robchapman5366 thank you Rob! Appreciate the comment and you watching 🙂
Where is the straight jacket buddy? You goofy😅😅😅
@@jkgkjgkijk i’m one of the few that can get out of one. So…..”they” gave me a camera and said I could make RUclips videos. It’s worked so far!🤪
Not skagit casting myself but my local shop said to expect to spend about 20 hours getting your regular fly casting down. 15 - 20 minutes at a time on the front lawn gonna take a while!
@@nofotomojo i would agree with that. Some people just get it right away. The best part is when you bomb casts way out there and put no effort in. That’s when some mind/body connection starts. After that don’t get in the way of the casting or you will end up like me!! Hahaha
First, it is a nice fish. Congratulations. Second, you are right that the problem is the D-loop. (Your D-loops are not as dynamic and as aligned as you want yet. They are more like quick roll casts. Don't worry, we were all there and I think you are already 90% of the way. It is all more fun after this.) But, I think you chose a very ineffective style to practice (i.e. skagit casting) to perfect your D-loop. In Skagit style casting change of direction for the rod during casting is so drastic that it is never going to be intuitive why the D-loop is formed and aligned efficiently behind you. In other words, you will reach the performance ceiling very quickly and I think you are already there. I would start with no direction change switch casts. That will prefect your D-loop. As far as I see from the clip, switch casts would be enough where you fished. Later, you can do single-speys with slight direction change. Once you get proficient in these on both shoulders, you will realize that you do not need 99% of other casts let alone skagit casting. Skagit lines a very good and versatile but skagit casting is not. You also do not need all that splash.
@@self-taught_angler thanks for the tips!🙂
My yard practice is the talk of the neighborhood. 🤷🏻♂️ I too have found that when I go from a dry fly to a streamer, I suck! But at least not as bad as I did last week. I love to Practice, practice, practice. Nice video. Thanks.
@@wschield608 i’m that guy too!!! Hahaha! I also go to the park when i want to bomb some casts. Good on ya for practicing.
I wish I had someone like you to show me how it’s done. In the meantime I’ll focus on accuracy.
Great video, I was talking with my mate about how long RUclips fishers spend fishing to get 5 mins of action the other day, loved to see the warts n all of fishing.
Thanks a bunch eh! Haha! Appreciate the comment 👌
Great video. What brand of nippers do you use ?
@@4492573 they’re from Fly Life Company out of Tottenham, Ontario. Great little fly shop and they ship everywhere
Why do you need two hands with a 7 1/2' rod?
Shoulder issues from trying to be a “cool guy” with a dirtbike in my earlier years. Two hands takes a lot and I mean a lot of strain off my dominant casting arm.
Does this work for scissors with serrated blades?
Unfortunately not.
I came to this realization a few years back. Now when I see rod reviews, I just cringe at the recommendation they give for line grains. I think these companies/influencers/reps are a bit apprehensive to recommend something that goes against what the norm has been for so long, or they simply just don’t know any better. You nailed it man. Listen to the OG guys. They’ve figured it out. Ed Ward, Jerry French, just to name a couple. All fishing shorter rods and lighter heads. They have no problems sending their lines out to any fishable distance. Plus you gain all the sensitivity of a lighter line system, and when you do hook a fish, the fish is fighting you, not a jumper cable of a fly line. Thanks for posting this. Cheers!
You said it perfectly! I hope someone will fix it. At least OPST has it right so there’s a start
Darts!!😂💰👌
It’s the same e 2 lb test w number 10 long shank and a broken worm and a split shot. Bam 💥 catches fish every time. Like bow hunting once u do it it’s a rush be smarter fisherman w a fly
Sounds like bass fishing after 80 k u wake up truck boat gear over gear it never ends. I get it
Get the job done EVERYTIME....bold, very bold
@@flytyryguy yeah, i will agree it’s bold. Almost…….dare I say!?!? Too bold! Hahah! These get me on fish but I completely understand there are waterways that will humble you very fast! Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment 👍
@greenhornflyhorn yes I've been humbled many times
Try to OPST commando head for single hand skagit
I fish in a lot of tight conditions, trees, high banks yadda yadda, and figured skagit heads were going to have me throwing darts, but I have issues. That said, I'm using 4/5wt 7'6" - 9'ft rods. I think I have a 250grain commando for my 5wt and a 200grain for my 4wt and I have a glass 4wt that I run a 175grain. You've inspired me to maybe down size my lines even further and SLOW DOWN!!! Any other tips for micro skagit on single handed short rods/glass would be much appreciated.
@@moneymonk66 if I may. I would try the 200 grain on your 5wt and 175 grain on the 4wt(non fiberglass). I struggled when i first got into the skagit game. I couldn’t feel the line bending the rod, i blew the anchor a lot, almost 50% of my casts flopped in a big mess. What i found that helped(and I mean night/day difference) was to slow down! But, slowing down will only do so much. Take the double spey, make sure when you sweep to the “d loop” it remains on the same plane. Basically don’t raise your rod incrementally during the sweep until you’re ready to lift into the 10&2 position(the basic casting position). THIS ONLY works for shorter skagit heads like commandos, skagit scout etc. What this does is helps keep your rod loaded(also slowing down helps with this too) and it helps with not blowing your anchor. Lighten up!! Lighten the grip pressure, when you have a death grip on your rod it helps nobody! It also makes your rod come alive(wow that sounded bad) think about it like you’re holding an egg. Don’t break it. Finally when you get to the forward stroke don’t put too much effort in, just make sure you come to an abrupt stop. Until I make a video on the subject this is all i got. Keep er tight! Milan
Darts! 😂
Never heard of the inch worm ?
I’m just starting out. I love casting and playing fish a little longer, so off the bat euro nymphing seems less interesting to me. It’s clearly a successful method. But wow, reading the comments here is really showing me a lot of fly fisherman are arrogant and hypercritical of anyone who has a different opinion. I appreciate you for putting yours out there.
Yeah. it comes with the territory of being on RUclips. Fly fishing and bow hunting are the two sports where people can get very passionate about their keyboards! Hahah! Good on ya for enjoying the fly line and really tapping into the soul of fly fishing. Good luck out there🤘
Another great video. Impressive casting and very informative
@@DrDitchpickle thank you doctor!
Great video dude! I want to set up my 4 wt for a kinda micro skagit rig. Your video was straightforward and concise.
Everything we use is, from home or craft store 10 times cheaper, ok hooks thats about it
Im confused. No matter the technique you are always staring at something...indicator, fly, sighter, its all the same. I euro and still enjoy the destination plenty. Not to mention the beauty of each fish I catch (which is typically 10x with euro nymphing) You are one weird dude, but you do you! 😂
I’m weird? Well……excuse….me! Hahaha! Label away as you see fit. 👍
Give me a classic double taper for sure, I am now learning that all these WF variants are not the answer.
@@JohnRitson78 i do enjoy being able to swing in a deep pool. With skagit i can do that. But!!! A double taper is so buttery to cast, i just can’t get them down enough for my purposes. If you have any ideas, shoot away, would like to hear how you do it🙂
@@greenhornflyhorn I do not know what to suggest as it is one of those things that you learn to adapt to and I come from the days when the WF was not even thought of. But after coming back to the game, I sure can see the lesser benefit of the WF ranges.
I have figured out how to make yarn indicators and leaders that are easily adjustable with no leader kink...inline all the way. You use macrame yarn (same as Dorsey, but you fuse it), melt and squash a base, melt a pin hole in that newly formed tab, put it on your leader (a section of straight mono). Nail knot Dacron 30# stops above and below using a nail knot tool. Super light...lands like a parachute. Hope you get the idea. i've made a vid on how to do this. I also dress them with silicone grease, and they float forever. Won't work with a tapered leader, but I always build my own. May sound complicated, but it isn't...just yarn, mono, and Dacron for the whole thing. Need a lighter and pliers but I carry those anyway.
This is what I have been advocating all along. You can even go lower in weight. The more one gets into it, the more the case for lighter rod and lighter lines. This is the reason designing your own lines and heads are super important. It takes the understanding of the line design to a new level. There are literarily dirt-cheap lines online from abroad one can cut and play. Short heads are good for close to bank fishing. I can shoot a 26 ft system (14ft of 240grain head + 12 ft of 70 grain versileader) above 85ft with a 10ft 4wt switch rod from under a tree. I do not even cast regular casts with my single hand rods anymore, I have my own spey lines for them too. Always go lighter in rod and line.
I switched to opst to reward ed ward and his common sense approach
They’re fantastic lines. I have em and can’t complain whatsoever
For some reason the line and rod manufacturers have gone crazy with their weight recommendations. My all casting problems were gone once I changed to lighter heads.
Yup! Finding that sweet spot and let er’ rip🤘 Thank for taking the time to watch and comment
That was a killer parasite get out of the water🤔
