Making river rocks from grinder slurry
In this video Jill shows you how she uses waste from the lap grinder to turn into beautiful river rocks for your projects and all for free! In a glass studio there is little waste as everything can be used. Here's a great example of how to re-purpose waste from grinding and turn it into some wonderful pebbles and rocks for your projects.

They look particularly good in the sunlight - makes the glass really sing. Beautiful project! 💙
What a stunning result. Thank you so much for taking us through the whole process start to mounting ❤❤❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
credit should go to Look Ma No Stand for developing those slumpers.
We've not heard about that before, do tell us more. Like many things there's always claims about who invented it first. Interested to hear.
Well I did get this awesome tool , cutting circles is such a joy! Can cut the all day long! Do you fuse 2 circles to make your little ornaments, what is your target temp? Was worried if I only used one, circle would distort in the firing......thank you for your guidance!
Great to hear you love the tool. We use a tack fuse which is 760ºC in our kilns, it may be different in yours. A full fuse or a tack fuse will work just as well. We only use 1 layer of glass for those ornaments. Firing a single layer will not distort, it will round off, but that's about it. Obviously this will be more pronounced on a full fuse over a tack fuse.
@@FiredGlass Thank you again for your feedback, I have been using my cutter, a perfect tool for making these circles very quickly, could do this all day! (in fact I have...) thanks!
Thank you, great video. Some mackerels seam to be curved, do you use a mold ? what kind ? Many thanks to you.Hello from France !
No mould used, handcut flat glass. See parts 1 & 2 of this series which covers this from the beginning. This is part 3.
thank u
ive never seen brushes that big. My grinder is slanted, and now has clips on the sides to slide something into it, something more narrow. BTW i love your fish do u do a class on that too. and how do u have it all together?
The Brown trout was a piece for the Southern Nature Art exhibition. It took ages. We’ve done long unedited step by step video on a fox project which was painted in enamels. Same process, although a different subject.
i have a question for u about what kind of brush u are using around your lap grinder. when did u buy Please?
It's just an old paintbrush, nothing special.
@@FiredGlass Jill, Good Morning. so i made river rock with the sludge from my table saw. The slurry/sludge is more course and after firing grainy, not shinny. I made them before but added color, so when making mine i did put a little color on them before firing. I do have a question, do u let them dry out before putting them in to be fired? I cant remember if i did before when i made with color..didnt make notes. Elaine
@@elainefuehrer5739 no we don't let them dry out. Once they are on the bisque tile they go in the kiln and fired as and when it's full. That can be immediately or later that day.
@@FiredGlass Thank u Jill, Ill give that a try
As usual, your generosity in sharing your skills and knowledge is much appreciated. 😊
My pleasure!
Thanks!
Bless you thank you Robert - that's very kind of you.
Hi Jill thank you for the video. Can I suggest dampening the grinder dust when cleaning it out of the machine. Way safer than all that dry dusty powder. Grinder paste is also good for grinding off hard edges or bits of stuck kiln wash. instead of using grit
Good tips - thank you.
Remarkable! I'll make some for myself, as soon as I've collected enough powder.
Have fun, being free it makes it more enjoyable we find!
looks like i saw this 2 yrs ago, wanting to know if that medium can go with any enamel
It should be okay with most brands.
Grinder sludge is great for testing freeze n fuse molds too!
Great tip!
Thank u!! i have the bullseye ceramic wave slumper. would like to have these types mainly for being able to store them.. but im wondering if i can do that idea with the ceramic mold.
No reason why not. So long as it’s stable.
how big is your shop? is that the one u film your creative videos from? I do love how the tables fold down from the wall.
Studio is 5m x 3m. Yes it’s where we film our videos. The storage units are really useful, expensive but worth it.
i have buckets of it and i have fired a few, i also added a few drops of enamel to them, but i do think the grey rocks look better
Good idea on adding enamel
@@FiredGlass Jill when im watching u, I make NOTES.
Jill, Jill, Jill, you are so clever! I never would have thought of that! I always clean my equipment and toss that into a bucket and then into a bin! Simply brilliant! Thank you for sharing! ❣
LOL as they say, you learn something every day!
Love making these, but I hate mixing up the sludge so this is what I do. I keep my powder in a small jar that fits into my rock tumbler container. It doesn't fit perfectly, so I put some paper between my jar and the tumbler container for it to hold in place. I then have a small rock that I put in there that helps to move stuff around as it tumbles. I let it tumble for a half hour, then check on it. If it is mixed well it is done. Stir in more water if needed.
Good use for you rock tumbler to avoid mixing! Thanks for sharing.
0:18 Elderly American coal miners called the condition "rocks in the box" 😆😆 silicosis in modern parlance if I am correct. Not a pleasant debilitation. 1:28 I would be thinking vacuum cleaner, but perhaps it is so finely powdered that it would go through a filter? But then if you want o reclaim it for use, a wet/dry vaccum would loose your material? They look like they could be drilled to make buttons for garments if size could be managed. Thank you for the lesson!
There's no easy way to collect it, the traditional scrape and scoop is effective and works. Buttons would certainly work, good idea!
As other folks have said, I too always throw away my grinding powder. Now I have a great use for it. Thank you!! I believe this may be the first time this subject has been addressed.
Have fun with your first batch! It will change how you look at 'waste' in your studio.
That’s a great idea!!
Glad you think so!
The not so glamourous side! But, from that, nothing is wasted.
Like looking behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz! As you say, nothin is wasted with glass, it can all be re-used.
WOW I ALWAYS THROW MINE AWAY. I WON'T NOW. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
River rocks for the win! You have fun now.
Genius! I would never have thought of doing that. Thank you! I looked at your website--Your work is really beautiful.
Thank you on both counts!
very informative, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
0:44 Wow! Nice display, great lighting and you have been very busy I can see, thank you for the show and tell. It's encouraging, uplifting, inspiring to get out and about among appreciative viewer. Good to know that you are well and inspired. Not hearing from you so long I hoped that no setbacks occured. Emojis not working, starnge.
9 people round on day 1, which is a good start. Sales too!
@@FiredGlass So encouraging to have customer support and appreciation. Good to know that you are well! 🍸🍸
You could make a small scoop by taking a disk grinder to a cheap spoon. Then bend up the sides like your husband did on the larger ones.
Good idea!
Jill, everything looks simply amazing! Well put together. Oh how I wish I was in the U.K.! Best of luck, I know you will do well!
Thank you so much! 😊
Great display of your excellent work.
Thank you Barry.
You don’t do near enough RUclips videos. I love watching you work and create. Love the birdies.
Thank you. It takes a long time to record and then edit our videos which is why we don’t do frequent uploads. Quality over quantity.
Great to see how others are organizing their studios. It is always chalenge to find more space for all staff we need for our business. Greetings from hot Croatia.
Thank you! We find you can always fill empty spaces, as you say a constant challenge.
What's the name of the glue you use? These birds are adorable!! ❤
Its GlasTac Gel from Bullseye
what is your firing schedule for these adorable birds?
It’s a standard tack fuse schedule which a downloadable PDF can be found on Warmglass website for all Bullseye glass firing schedules. Or just use your standard schedule as there’s nothing special needed here as there’s no thickness or hold time concerns
You have probably mentioned this in a previous video, but which glue are you using please. Loving these little birds, can’t wait to have a go!
Glue is GlasTac brand which we get from WarmGlass here in the UK. Great to hear you will be making some birds too!
Thanks, do you use the thin or thick version?
@@vickypryer7188 Jill typically uses the gel; Bullseye Glastac Fusing Gel
@@vickypryer7188its the thick version. The blue one 🙌
Oh my goodness I have missed you!
Ah thank you Christine.
At the end of every day's rush, I have wondered how is Jill getting on with her new equipment? I miss seeing you so much you are such a good teacher. Your lighting is superb, I don't recall the light being so good perviously.
Thanks Ralf. Lighting has not changed, nor camera settings, so perhaps time has played its merry dance. It's a busy time of year, as I type Jill is at a 4 day exhibition at Souther Nature Art down in Fareham in the UK. She has 2 pieces in the exhibition and has a stall in the artist's market for the 4 days. They all through September it's NROS, as mentioned in this video. Again 2 pieces in the central exhibition and then opening the studio for various events during the month. Much preparation and long days to get the pieces ready. We hope all is well with you.
@@FiredGlass Thank you for taking time to share the news! I has been 30 years since I took my artwork to a show. I DID enjoy being at them, but buyer support dwindled. It WAS encouraging to link up with like minded people, so I think that I know how it goes for Jill. I hope that she has a pleasant, uplifting time there.
Happy to hear your charming voice and see a new video! I’ve had good success with bits of scrap copper wire for the legs as well.
Thank you, Good tip on the copper wire too - thank you.
Thank you Jill. Such a cute and quick project. I’ll be making some for my granddaughter, her nickname is Birdie!
This is just perfect Gwen, I'm sure Birdie will love your creations.
Hi Jill! Glad to see you and thrilled for a new video! I’ve watched your others over and over and over. Love them ❤
Bless you, that's great to hear. Seen your comments on most of our videos so thank you.
Er, John was not alone, I also thought that they were penguins! As always, extremely interesting and fascinating to watch.
Kindred spirit from the Penguin world - thanks Barry.
Sooo easy, possibilities are endless! Gorgeous as usual. 😉 Did you fuse those Tekta facing up (or cane face down)? Thank you so much Jill!
As you say, limitless design opportunities limited just by your own imagination. Can't recall if it was rough or smooth side up, think it was rough. Only difference will be more bubbles or less bubbles.
@@FiredGlass Thank you Jill! So thrilled to have you back online. Love your videos and lessons! ❣
Jill!! I was nearly vibrating with excitement when I saw your post! I was hoping once you got your beautiful lamp work area completed (excellent videos of you and hubby, beautiful work!) that we might get a few more fusing videos as well - not that you have a lot of free time on your hands, lol! Anyway, thank you so, so, so much for this adorable, fun project to make! I just recently purchased a pretty good bit of Bullseye for my holiday items, and these birdies will fit right in. Thank you and welcome back! xoxo from the U.S. 😄
Super to hear from you and love that you are going to make some jolly birds too with your Bullseye stash of glass. I'm sure you will have fun!
❤these!! Thanks!!
Thank you so much, glad you loved them!
Thank you so much for this post. I have been watching your videos since the begining, from America and appreciate all I have learned from you. You are so generous with your creations and instructions! I can't wait to give this one a go!
You are so welcome!
@@FiredGlass Is there somewhere I can get the pattern for the bird and the wing? I really like yours and would like to replicate it. Thank you!!
Jill didn't keep the pattern to be fair. Both the bird outline and wing are simple curves which you could drawer out on a piece of paper. They don't have to be an exact copy, make them your own design. So long as you like the shape and it's pleasing to your eye, then you've nailed it!
THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VERY CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm glad you like it
Hi, am thinking about buying this cutter, I have several other circle cutters ,this seems faster, tool with good weight. What is the largest circle that this can cut? what is the largest circle that you have cut with it? Just thought I would get the first hand report!
The smallest circle it can cut is 10mm and the largest is 185mm on between 2-15mm thick glass.
Thanks! I love your videos, the urge to experiment with the variety of glass fusing possibilities is endless!
(of course I had to purchase one!)
@@robertagoto6736 I'm sure you will enjoy using it. It's a great tool and gives super cuts.
