When you mention stories about haunted houses, my mind immediately goes to two classics of the genre. One of them is “The Woman in Black” by Susan Hill, published in 1983. Set in early 20th century Britain, the book features all of the ingredients of a traditional English ghost story: an isolated village by the sea; a large empty house, often shrouded in fog; and a young accountant sent to stay alone in that same large empty house to catalogue the personal papers of its late resident. The only reservation I have about “The Woman in Black” is that the author violates one of my own personal rules about ghost and horror stories, which I won’t mention here as it would be a bit of a spoiler. My favourite haunted house story would have to be “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson, published in 1959. The 1963 film adaptation called “The Haunting” is still the most unsettling film of its type I’ve ever seen, mainly because of what we don't see, but only imagine. I tend to like the older generation of English ghost story writers, such as Algernon Blackwood, E.F. Benson, and Montague Rhodes James. Some of the stories of M.R. James are still unnerving, over a century after they were first published. In particular, I think of stories such as “The Mezzotint” and “The Haunted Doll’s House”, which are available on RUclips as audiobooks and short film versions.

My favourite show stop was in Back to the future. Piece of set came of the upstage rail. They dropped the projection curtain in while they manually brought in the kitchen set and had prepared a "There appears to have been a gap in the space time continuum" graphic. Unfortunately because the curtain was in when they built the kitchen, when they took the curtain out the kitchen table had been placed on top of it and it the curtain flipped it sending props all over the stage. Great piece if improve from the cast as Marty and the dad played the scene while running round picking up props and biff closed the scene with a joke about 'using the money you owe me to buy yourself a new table'

Thanks for the review. Kala sounds the most interesting. I may add it to my (already very long) TBR pile. Yellowface sounds interesting to me, too. You may like Writers&Lovers by Lily King. I just started it. Not my favourite beginning so far, but it's readable enough AND I've heard good things about it (what it means to write, how hard it is to let make yourself write, and later let go of something created (which will never be perfect) etc. If there is one thing I've learned about writing is that while I do believe some critique is healthy, in general I wish I had never showed my writing to any other writers. They all have their style and opinions and in the end, it doesn't necessarily make one's writing better. Best to focus on actually becoming an authentic person and then the writing mirrors that authenticity. Anyway, thanks for the review. Always a pleasure to listing to your take on things. I hope you'll pick some books from the long list. Not many; maybe 2 or 3.

@@PagesAndStages It was a DNF for me, but I was in a slump. The writing just didn't grab me; for a writer so celebrated I expected more. Thanks for recommending THE BIRTHDAY PARTY. So far, the best book fo 2023 for me. It grabbed me right away, which is something I've been looking for and haven't found. I even tried Romantic Comedy by C. Stenfield and it was also a DNF for me; on page 76 I wondered why I'm wasting my life reading such a stupid book, which is harsh and weird b/c she's the author of PREP, a good book. Really enjoying THE BIRTHDAY PARTY. I tried reading Demon Copperhead and I will probably finish it just b/c it won the Pulitzer Prize, but unlike Dickens I find her style jarring. The story is excellent, but her style ... IDK, Dickens is so smooth; he doesn't try to be smarter than he is and then he ends up being brilliant through his simplicity. Just like Hemingeway. I hate when writers try too hard, or try to pack too much in (although as a writer myself I know how hard simplicity is to accept and surrender to). Happy New Year. I hope you're reading something juicy. The last juicy book for me was THE PUSH by Ashley Audrain. Nothing has topped it so far.

I'm reading PAUL by Daisy Lafarge. I had very high expectations and I really like the story, but her style irritates me. Plus, Paul is irritating, too and I find him dull; I can't identify with France's feelings. Maybe I'm being harsh, but I have so little time to read lately, that I really need a book that I love. I just ordered Sorrow and Bliss, and I'm hoping it'll be one of those books. I do like The Invisible Life of Addie Larue and I still have Whispers by Ashley Audrain somewhere in my apt to read, but lately, there hasn't been a book that just hit me right on the heart. I totally get that reading slump feeling.

I can't say, I dislike it because it's very smart at times. But a little bit of lighter writing would've made it more "approachable " to an average audience.
