When I started this book, I wasn't sure that I could live with that voice and that style for the whole book. But then it drew me in completely and in the end I really loved it. I put Will and Testament on my tbr right after I had finished it.
Bought the book back in January but couldn't steel myself to read it. With shortlist being announced on Tuesday I decided to read it this weekend, and had rightly guessed it was going to give me a knot in my stomach. About halfway through I skipped and read the end, as I had to know where it would finish before going back and filling in the gap. I agree that there are huge chunks where nothing moves on, what Johanna does is repetitive, but it has to be like that. In so many stages of our lives we over analyse things before we can accept/implement the decision deep down we knew was right in the first place. I loved the writing and the very raw storytelling, and liked that we are left wondering about the other side of the family story. I am pleased that I read it. I hope that it makes the shortlist, but when you look at many of the other books the judges picked for the longlist who knows what their taste is. I am now going to read something light and warm-hearted.
I actually liked this book. I don't understand what people mean by nothing happens. That's reality. Otherwise, it's a plot driven book like Best Sellers. There's popularity in action over slow burn reality The reason why bandit qs is more popular than pyre :) Not to mention tapping into the weakness of Westerners- the dog being the highlight of BQ

It really creeps up on you! And I did the exact same thing, Will and Testament went straight on my tbr

Completely agree, I’m glad you were able to read it! I really hope it makes the shortlist but like you say, who knows with these judges
the best intro rever!
Thank you. I may read this book now. I'd probably wouldn't otherwise but I'm glad you loved it.
Let me know what you think of it if you do!
@@PagesAndStages I will. I'm having trouble getting my hands on it. I wanted to buy it, but I might have to go to the library.
the personal element in hjorth's work is fascinating
so much!!
i kind of wished we saw more of the mother/son relationship but i understand how his absence was a significant indicator of the relationship
Yeah I think it could have been really interesting to learn more about what happened and how he grew up, same with her relationship with her husband

Yes 100%!! So much happens in the narrator’s head, it’s overwhelming. Still haven’t read Pyre but I will!
