funny, i was just this week complaining to my partner about people not liking rookie cause they think it's childish and how i find it a shame, cause they're missing the point, but also because i just really like this song but then again, i got into kpop by snsd's gee back in 2009, so i'm biased to repetitive bubbly songs (and red velvet has me on a chokehold precisely for their strong concepts, so rookie is a slam dunk in my book)

man i remember when Flower Guy in Rookie was a metaphor for SK's president at the time and the whole song was something about the politic situation in SK at the time

while i agree with what you asses that it was intentional, i think sm could've done better by red velvet by releasing at least one more velvet concept, even if just a single. especially considering how infrequent their velvet concepts are compared to their red ones & the fact that red velvet themselves seem to enjoy performing their velvet concepts more.

while i've never persinally used this meme, i' also find it incredibly funny when considering the fact that ningning is a versace ambassador & furthermore, donatella versace specifically chose her to represnt her brand. every time i read it it feels like donatella versace herself is endorsing ningning on whatever she is doing & killing it lol.

Personally I am sorry to say but I have never been into virtual singers much, because when I want something fiction I have just been sticking to just fictions and I feel like I can connect to a real person's creation like music and poetry for why and what reasons they created much more than a song that's been fleshed out of nothing. I don't know but I don't feel a pop star energy from them, there's nothing, there's no story of songwriting, no struggle, nothing I can relate to or admire.

Since there was definitely some commentary about the images of perfection we portray ourselves as on social media and the jealousy we feel towards these images of not just other but ourselves, I wonder if the “superbeing” concept is meant to be commentary on how celebrities curated images begin to merge with and take over their true selves. I also believe they’re playing with the idea of infighting given the fight scenes in drama, the members messing with Giselle in Supernova, and the fight over the weird object in Whiplash.

in my opinion, red velvet have never missed. i love all of their title tracks and all of their b-sides, they have a no-skip discography for me. i also love all of their concepts that they've tried as of now and i'm excited to see what they do next. i can understand that most people might not like some of their titles since all of them are different genres and sounds, but for me red velvet only release REAL music. red velvet are the best kpop group that has walked this industry and will always be, no one can touch their amazing discography and concept

Such a cool theory 🤔 I really agree with you, and I think in my feelings towards Rookie there was always some embedded liminality. The first time I heard it I didn't appreciate it. After a while, I came to the conclusion that it's a masterpiece, but you have to be in that specific headspace, detached from reality (seeing yourself in that hypothetical idealized scenario), to enjoy it.

I guess SM wanted to experiment with a different concept (which they surely have right to do) but, i just think the song was mid and felt very AI-ish (i mean why it would not bcz it is literally made using ai) but they could have directed all that money to maybe a good new concept including the aespa members with some lines of the AI nævis

This makes me want to go back and look at albums that really stuck with me (like rookie for example) and figure out why i loved them so much. You made me realize how much the details of a project really matter to me thank you for this perspective! My friends question why Rookie is my favorite title track and album and seeing this put it in perspective for me! Thank you!
