I really don't understand people's obsession with wanting groups to just redo their most famous songs but in a different font over and over. The strong point of Red velvet to me is their versatility. They can do so many concepts and pull them off flawlessly each and every time. Why would you want to trap them into one concept hindering their growth as a group? If you want another Bad boy or Psycho, venture into their b-sides, you'll find what you want there. Their Red title tracks are ones that really grow on you over time, RBB is one of their best and Cosmic is the best Kpop release in 2024. Won't let anyone slander RV's red side
Legit. There's this subset of Dives that are always whining and moaning that IVE should go back to the Love Dive concept and sound, when IVE quite literally has an entire EP (I'VE MINE) that showcases that they're versatile and won't stick to just one concept
The high pitched scream on RBB is so satisfying and fun to hear, like it really does take the song to another level, cant imagine anyone doing it other than them
@@Stardust-ez4to no it's not the highest note in kpop history😂 It's just the highest note recorded in a kpop song a D7, but there's ppl who have hit higher notes, it's just not in a song, like Wendy's Eb7, and Jessica's dolphin notes
@Stardust-ez4to hehe no worries, it's not your fault, that's just how it got spread around, and ppl just didn't attach the last part, "in a kpop song"💁🏾♀️
my favorite part of red velvet is teasing chill kill to be like peekaboo/psycho level velvet concept but to be such a red song every other way the song is campy its fun and music video plays with it its a red song wearing a velvet coat while a year later cosmic is the opposite the music video is bright but the song is tonally a velvet track its hopeful yet melancholy - its the velvet song in red coat
Exactly. Red Velvet is the best at releasing 'bitter sweet' songs in my opinion. Chill Kill's last chorus in particular, it sounds so bright and upbeat but with a just a tinge of sadness (Wendy's adlibs) and Irene's last line that makes it feel unresolved.
the interesting thing is that the Peekaboo have a creepy velvet concept but it's actually a red concept song too, just like Chill Kill 😭I'm sad that people underestimate it so much
I love them both because of that reason. They owe me those tears I've shed during my first few listens. They may be underappreciated but they could or might even top the main or moneybringer songs of them. 😂🥺
Red velvet would not have been better off without the red concept. I’m not losing Really bad boy, Zimzalabim, Cosmic, 28 reasons, Like a flower, wish you h*ll, ice cream cake, birthday, power up, and Rookie because someone on Twitter wants only velvet concepts
well i disagree cuz thats what made them so different from other groups, that they stick with a specific sound but were able to make it sound different, theyre all r&b tracks but different moods, if they did just velvet alone I cant imagine them getting far, because theres not even a lot of just plain r&b songs in kpop to begin with, theyre bsides for a reason, they sadly dont gain a lot of traction as say more dance pop and upbeat songs.
also we don't give enough credit to how good of an EP RBB is. it has some of red velvets strongest bsides and i think that to this day it's one of the best mini albums of not just red velvet but kpop in general
I'm really glad you talked RBB got a lot a hate despite it still being a good song and I'm super glad they didn't compromise their artistic concept. Red Velvet really is an inspiration
2:05 It was in fact released on the anniversary of the release of the Thriller music video, which makes a lot of sense, considering how both RBB and Thriller music videos take heavy inspiration from horror b movies
I don’t think people realize how HARD those Red concepts are to nail. The level of commitment in performance vocally and theatrically is so tough to keep consistent. It really is a testament to showing how they’re the most versatile group in k-pop history. I’m not lying when I say nobody could come close to nailing it as well as Red Velvet. The closest I could see is Billlie or f(x) but Red Velvet are leagues beyond them in rocking this.
You’re right! It is hard to sing these songs.. specially RBB! the harmonies, the adlib in the chorus sang by seulgi, Irene’s scream! I still don’t get why everyone ignored it.. people hate fun 😢
Red tracks are actually some of my favorites. I listened to Bad Boy and RBB consecutively for literal years, because they really do work well together, I think. Red tracks are fun and Velvet tracks are pretty. If this group stuck to only one side or another for their concept, they wouldn't be the group I love so much.
RBB isnt a red velvet song i put on often, but when i do, im FEELIN IT. That song is a lot of fun. I came into the kpop world around the release of psycho... so i was definitely brought in by the velvet side, but Red Velvet wouldnt have gripped my heart so firmly if it hadnt been for their Red side. I love the contrast, i love when they blend them together. Its really certified them as one of my top favorite "bands" of all time. Also as a horror and metal fan, i truly appreciate the darkness they mix into both concepts. Red velvet and aespa both have this feel to me that makes me think theyre like the metal of kpop. I have no idea how to explain this but it just makes complete sense to me lol
i'm not even that into red velvet but it kind of pisses me off whenever so called fans of red velvet claim red velvet should stick to their velvet concept or that they still want another bad boy or another psycho. i mean first of all their red title tracks are bangers. some of their most hated (by international fans) red songs like zimzalabim, rookie, umpah umpah, and yes rbb too are some of my favourite songs from them. i think red velvet genuinely is quite unique in kpop, and maybe even in pop as a whole, in that they are never willing to compromise on their artistic identity to make a profit. they debuted with a dual concept and they're sticking to their guns. i know the members have said they've abandoned the red/velvet dichotomy and try to just make "red velvet" songs now and i think that's genuinely just a logical evolution in red velvet's journey as artists. they're such a strong and well respected group precisely because they never do the same thing twice. it would cheapen bad boy to make a second bad boy. red velvet wouldn't be special anymore if they decided to just keep remaking their most loved velvet songs until everyone gets sick of them. those older songs people keep insisting on are still there to listen to whenever. red velvet should look to the future and keep making music that challenges them as artists and pushes their concept further. tbh, i would be fine with it if they eventually dropped the red velvet concept all together just as long as they keep trying to do something new. if not new for the industry, at least something new for themselves. as solo artists i don't really care if they want to make 50 songs about the same thing but as a group they have something great right now and it would be insane to stop just to make a bit more money. like, they're chart toppers already. it's not like they're wanting for fans. they're already in the perfect place any artist wants to be in to be able to experiment because all their releases are still successful no matter what kind of weird shit they put out because it's always good. that's literally the dream.
whenever this discourse comes up it annoys me because the same people who cry and kick their feet for only velvet concepts usually completely ignore be natural and one of these nights (their most velvet titles yet)
Tbh, their Red side has to be my fav side of theirs. I mean RBB and Cookie Jar are my fav title tracks from them... which is kinda wild to say amongst all their other banger titles
i think conceptually, putting rbb after bad boy is so smart. exactly how you said it: showcasing the red and the velvet in succession. but i think in practice it worked against RV, since new fans came for that sexy, mature bad boy vibe and their first comeback was a kitschy, experimentsl red concept they weren't familiar with. so it probably soured new fans at the time, but as a casual fan since red flavour i remember loving how diverse their sound was and how they didn't pigeonhole their sound even after a major success
Same. I remember when Zimzalabim first came out and a lot of people were positively SH!TTING all over it. They just didn't get it or weren't ready for it at the time. Fast forward 5 years, and now it's one of their most beloved zany tracks and an absolute crowd fave song at their concerts.
I remember back in 2021 or so, I went through and listened to ALL of Red Velvet's songs. When I got to RBB, my mind was blown by the song; it was so seductive. This was done with headphones on, so I could hear the details, too. I have to say that the song is one of their most packed songs to date. I Will Die on the Hill is one of their best songs with Bad Boy. You also mentioned that people had warmed up to Red Velvet before the release of RBBs. That tells me they weren't into them. With RV, you have to at least like some of both sides to be on the inside. If RBB got fans to completely turn on them, I get it, but it really just goes to show the people want more of sexy girl crush vibe and RV was not in the mood.
They wouldn't have stuck to the 'velvet' concept. Returning to the 'red' concept after BB was already a challenge in and of itself. RBB is an attempt at incorporating the 'velvet' concept in the 'red'. In my opinion, RBB was the beginning of blending and blurring the lines between the two concepts. It was trully a transitional track with the goal of preserving the audience that had been drawn to RV with BB. Maintaining one concept as a group is difficult and pointless. Companies are essentially looking for an identity and not a concept. In SM's case, they use concepts as an introduction to the group and switch it up along the way. RV is one of the few groups that jumps from one concept to the other and, while I love that for them, the reality is that any song becomes less marketable when people don't know what to expect. RV is also one of the few groups with a distinctive musical identity. In retrospect, I don't think there could ever be a way to prolong the BB level of hype for Red Velvet. Their strongest suit is also their weakest spot. In a way, Red Velvet's concept is "doomed" to be of high quality and it cannot be undone
Some of their strongest tracks are on their red side, but I do get why people are tired of not having a truly velvet title track. Honestly I’m not surprised, as the velvet sound doesn’t really have that colorful, bombastic spectacle that a title track demands, and we all know SM doesn’t care enough to give them an album with a double TT promotion
RBB was my first ever red velevt comeback and ive been hooked since. I will always love red velvet. They are constantly overlooked these days. They are so colorful and theatrical even when they are being velvet. Everything about it is intruiging and draws you in. You are always spoilt for choice when it comes to rhe vibes of red velvet. They have something for everyone in terms of kpop and that is very admirable. Not a lot of groups do that or can pull off what red velvet does. Itzy with Sneakers and Gidle with Klaxon(?) Are prime examples. They released those songs eith MAJOR backlash for it not feeling like something theyd release. For red velvet at this point people expect it and want it. And they never flop... even if people insist they do. Cause with red velvet there is always something for everyone, and they push the limits and explore everything fully. The musicality of red velvet is everything i could ever want from a kpop group. And im so happy they serve it to us. And i will deeply mourn them when they disband one day. The impact red velvet has had on me is crazy. My only regret is not discovering them at their debut when i was 12/13. But even so ive loved them since about 2018 so ive been here for 6 years and counting. I do love conventional kpop and the releases they give. They scratch that guilty pop itch my brain craves. But when it comes to exploring something truly artistic and unpredictable I always return to red velvet.
I personally believe RBB would've been successful if SM didn't delay the release till after halloween. By the time it came out the hype died out, and everyone was already over the spooky vibes. Everyone assumed RBB would be a camp halloween anthem from the teasers, but once SM announced the release date there were alot of people hoping it would actually end up being a Bad Boy pt. 2 which resulted in disappointment on both sides of the theories. SM also severely mismanaged the whole comeback due to poor planning.
to me rbb just showed how inconsistent and unloyal reveluvs are they only need “velvet” songs and refuse to listen to something more than “grown women” music
I never understood why some reveluvs act like their "red" side is only cutesy and childish. For example, "Oh boy" is from their red album but it is far from being cutesy and childish.
in my opinion, really bad boy is what solidified red velvet as a group that pushes diversity and innovation-music & concept wise. ever since, rbb has been my top three red velvet title tracks. it’s perfect from the horror references (concept), styling, song structure, and album cohesiveness. i think its only flaw is how they didn’t integrate this into their album packaging. even so, aside from red velvet, the team behind this really deserves a pat on their backs. and no one in general, even rv themselves, has yet to top this project.
RBB era has some of my fav red velvet b-sides. Butterflies is such a pretty vocal heavy song, taste and sassy me are nice funky songs. So good is a more chill beat. I do remember back when I was in high school when this got released, people thought this was a lazy attempt at following up with Bad Boy. I’d say it was a good transition point into something like zimzalabim.
one thing I love about red velvet is that you never know what you’re going to get… 😂 everything is a surprise which I love. they can pull off any type of concept, only red velvet can do that.
I think this video glazes over the fact that power up was released in between bad boy and rbb where power up was a bright summer "red" bop which gained massive domestic success earning SM and maintaining the only group in SM to receive a PAK until aespa arrived iirc. Also I believe that rbb was the first title track to be deemed a "red velvet" track coined by the group itself where there is a mix of both "red" such as the music the brightness of the song itself while the velvet includes the bridge within the song and a darker concept and aesthetic.
Red velvet has the most perfect discography every single one of their songs out of all kpop groups i think red velvets discography is the closest to my heart its so special and done so well the best word to describe it is a magical special feeling that only u and ur closest frnds will feel their songs feel special and intimate and the intimate part is the intimacy of being understood and i love that idc what annoying people on twitter say red velvet has the perfect discography
MY favorite kpop is rnb based songs/groups. But for Red Velvet there ability to ALSO commit and sell the red side is why i love them,. What other group can give me the masterpiece known as Birthday.
I mean, they literally debuted with Happiness, then they released Be natural. Then they released Ice Cream cake and in the same album, as a single too, they release Automatic. Only people that didn't know Red Velvet to the core were surprised that they changed concepts every now and then
RBB is a guilty pleasure for me. Rather than pairing it with "Bad Boy," though, I pair it with "Good Boy Gone Bad" in my mind because they both have campy horror concepts.
RBB is one of my favourite RV releases of all time. The high pitched scream, the "Oh my god" line(s)... Hell yes. Especially Irene catches my eye during this era. I'ma big fan of their Red side, especially because genuinely fun releases that still sound well made are rare. Although some of them take some getting used to (looking at you, Zimzalabim), I can honestly say I don't dislike a single one of their Red releases. Excellent analysis, by the way! I particularly like the "Capitalizing on bad Boy's Success" part - very well structured, great overview.
i've loved RBB (and its mini album) since first listen. the EP is one of their best and most cohesive, along with FMR. had it been named otherwise, it probably would've been very popular - the 'really bad boy' name set expectations to reveluvs and casuals alike that it'd sound similar to bad boy 💀 but if you separate it and don't connect it at all to BB, it is soooo genuinely good. i definitely agree that RBB set the tone for their future, more experimental stuff like ZBB and chiki. RV's never done the same thing twice even pre-bad boy, so the switch up was to be expected (RBB is also not what 'stifled' their career, that was definitely just SM lmfaoooo (as a debut stan))
exactly, their major strenght is their power to pull off what other groups cant, in the same album a lot of times. who else (at that time especially) could pull off umpah umpah, zimzalabim and then psycho in the same year? SM just pulled out an f(x) and forgot to feed them, RBB had nothing to do with it. also, both bad boy and psycho attracted people who weren't used to being open minded towards versatility, "how dare the group known for experimenting with their concept DARE release something im not used to?!?!"
RBB was my first time experiencing a comeback era as a full fledge Reveluv. It was my first time listening through an album, watching all the music show performances, engaging with the fandom, etc. Suffice to say this comeback holds a lot of value for me.
Thank you so much for releasing a video with content that seems out of the blue but incredibly thoughtful and insightful. Thanks for giving this group your critique (:
I feel so bad for international stans who only like their Velvet title tracks (Automatic, One Of These Nights, Peek-A-Boo, Bad Boy, Psycho, ChiII KiII) and Korean stans who mainly like their Red title tracks (Dumb Dumb, Russian Roulette, Rookie, Red Flavor, Power Up, Umpah Umpah, Queendom, Birthday, Cosmic). The beauty of Red Velvet is how their music embraces diversity and they don’t shy away from the challenges of duality. We really haven’t seen that with other groups. TXT, Billlie, and GWSN have thrived under multiple concepts. But not the clear distinction between dark and light. You could maybe argue that DreamNote and Pink Fantasy have this division. But their darker concepts tend to be received much better. Anyways, back to Red Velvet. You might have noticed that I didn’t mention all of their title tracks. That’s because I personally consider Ice Cream Cake, RBB, Zimzalabim, and Feel My Rhythm to be perfect harmonization of their two sides into one track. Red Velvet wouldn’t be Red Velvet without both sides of their discography. And getting back to how I distinguished between Korean and international stans, Feel My Rhythm spent over a year on the Circle Digital Chart. Red Velvet hadn’t done that since Red Flavor (Psycho only spent 50 weeks on the chart). Korean stans love and support the Red title tracks in full force! Keep in mind, Red Velvet scored SM Entertainment’s (SME) first Perfect All KiII (PAK) with “Power Up”. And “Umpah Umpah” is one of their most awarded songs on music shows. International stans complain so much about not getting Velvet concepts. But when given the opportunity with “ChiII KiII”, they dropped the ball. Claiming it “sounded weird” while preferring 4th and 5th gen girl group releases. Unfortunately, SME is horrible at understanding how to properly promote to the English/western market. If they had released the English version of “Bad Boy” as a stand alone digital single in March/April and not just slapped at the end of “Power Up”’s mini album, it could’ve been so well received! Instead, they gave us basically a reworked version of “Bang Bang” and it wasn’t received well. By the time 2018 rolled around, the trumpet influences we saw in “Uptown Funk”, “Talk Dirty”, and “Sax” had been left behind and trap music was in (hence “Bad Boy” and “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” being so well received). Okay, this is something I feel passionate about and get a bit frustrated with. Red Velvet has delivered not one, but two Psychos that fans just haven’t noticed. ChiII KiII is very Psycho-coded. Darker, velvet theme. Starts off with a synth and string instrumental accompanied by Wendy and Seulgi’s adlibs. The main lyric is an exclamation of not stressing over external forces because things will turn out alright. “Don’t think about tomorrow, forget about your sorrows” has the same comforting sentiment as “Hey now we’ll be okay”. It’s literally Psycho repackaged. And where ChiII KiII is the moon, Cosmic is the sun. There’s this sense of “stick with me and it’ll all turn out okay in the end”. Not as strong of a resemblance, but still has some similarities. It really makes me feel like people don’t actually want another Psycho in terms of musicality and they just want another hit to brag about (especially when Blinks, Onces, and 4th/5th gen girl group stans claim that Red Velvet is washed up and hasn’t had a hit since Psycho). Time for my SMCU enthusiast to say something lol Red Velvet and EXO’s lores are intertwined. EXO is often portrayed as wolves (“Wolf”, “Growl”, etc.). Red Velvet are more often portrayed as cats (“Ice Cream Cake”, “Queendom”, etc.). Red Velvet thrives on trickery and deception. You’d think the wolves would hunt the cats. But that’s the trap. Red Velvet wants EXO to think they’re the chasers (when Red Velvet are the ones hunting EXO, who are represented as the Bad Boy/RBB). We can see this portrayed in “Russian Roulette”. The mouse is the one that always has the upper hand over the cat, contrary to what you would expect. You can’t watch Red Velvet’s discography and trust your instincts. You’re always being deceived. Notice how when they deliver the line “Oh my god, he’s a really bad boy”, they don’t look scared. They’re happy to have found their next victim. Not everyone is going to know the ins and the outs of Red Velvet’s lore. But from that perspective, “RBB” being attached to “Bad Boy” makes perfect sense! Being released in November though… well, SME thought “Psycho” would fail and released it two days before Christmas sooo… The company has a pretty poor track record of understand when’s an optimal time to release things. Okay, that’s my two cents (or more like 5 dollars lol) worth of opinions. I think this was a great video and you really did a great job covering what happened and being kind to “RBB” compared to so many. I always look forwards to your uploads!
@@jp9480 The Halloween themed concept invoking imagery of The Shining with a darker lighting scheme (often in shades of fuchsia and magenta) comes off as something we would expect from their Velvet tracks. There is a strong emphasis on shadows with brighter lights being reserved for streetlights, flashlights, decorations, and an overhead light meant to mimic the light of the moon. They spend most of the video in a graveyard or a woodsy setting (that is when they’re not in the literal mouth of the wolf). Their wardrobe mainly consists of blacks, reds, and silver. They have pops of white, yellow, neon, and animal print. But these are far from getting the primary focus such as in music videos like “Power Up”, “Umpah Umpah”, and “Birthday”. When considering what tracks I classify as Red or Velvet, I consider the art direction of the music video as well. That’s part of what makes Red Velvet’s music so captivating and what I alluded to in my original comment. What you see isn’t always what you’d expect. Aside from maybe Purple Kiss, I don’t think there are many other groups that could have such a lively music track playing while being surrounded by death (headstones, skeletons, etc.). So yeah, I see where you’re coming from. But from my perspective, some of Red Velvet’s releases can’t be classified as solely one or the other. He group reminds everyone not to restrict them to just two general concepts. They can truly handle anything!
When it comes to velvet songs I-reveluvs only act like Bad boy and Psycho exist, that's why you'll always see them ask for Bad boy/Psycho 2.0, when they have other good velvet songs :/
@@seulgitastic05 Exactly! I really don’t believe they actually want another song like that specifically. They just want another smash hit to brag about because too many international stans are so focused on numbers. We can especially see this with how international KPop stans tend to parallel behaviors of toxic fandoms for western artists. Vocal, rapping, dance, writing, and production abilities are praised secondly after discussions about sales, streams, and charting performance. If they want a group that’s going to deliver the exact same thing time and time again, Red Velvet is not the group for them to be following. Their uniqueness comes from their ever evolving versatility.
@@oneusforall057 I love love love this comment. That's what I've always felt like. International Kpop audience just wants a sexy title track and a big hit based on numbers, not really velvet side. And most of them aren't really Reveluvs like they claim to be, just casual girlgroup stans who like bragging about streams & charts. Because how can you be a Reveluv when you don't fully appreciate RV's identity and their artistry and hate/ignore half of the members? Plus I agree rbb is very velvety in aesthetics & vibes even though the sound is quite red. I feel that about zimzalabim too. Feel my rhythm and Cosmic (imo) are truly a blend of both the sides.
really bad boy to me will ALWAYS trump bad boy. bad boy is one of if not my least favorite song in their discography and i still listen to rbb to this day. they're my ult group and i love the red and velvet sides - they wouldn't be the same without both
Same regarding bad boy!!! It’s not bad, not by any means, but the worship for it pisses me off. Everyone wants more velvet concept yet they ignore tracks like automatic, one of these nights, be natural, etc (don’t even get me started on their bsides). People want the velvet concept but only in this generic ‘sexy’ way and ignore any other venture of it while simultaneously shitting on the red side. And bad boy isn’t even *that* good of a song why are we still hung up on it 😭
I love the concept changes since I’m never bored of them. Twice had a generational run from like 2015-2019 but afterwards it kind of got samey?? I always say you cant handle me at my Zimzalabim/rookie/RBB then you don’t deserve me at my Kingdom Come/Underwater/So Good
If Red Velvet ever stuck to one concept, they wouldn't be Red Velvet any more. They would be just like every other boring, one-dimensional girl group that does the exact same thing every comeback. Bad Boy was most assuredly NOT the massive success that International fans like to portray it as. And to this day, I'm convinced that RBB was a gigantic troll job by SM and RV on all the bandwagon stans that crawled out of the woodwork during the Bad Boy era. The howls of outrage when it WASN'T "Bad Boy 2.0" were deafening.
i always loved that rbb was literally the red spoof of bad boy. like bad boy was all dark, mysterious and serious and rbb is like someone said try that again but not at all. i mean it's called REALLY BAD BOY it's so unserious it's great
I am a very late Red Velvet fan, Chill Kill is a no skip album for me, and I finally gave into diving into their disco. Admittedly, as a MeU, I was kind of biased against them from the get go but I'm finally getting over that.
as someone who loves both red and velvet concepts ppl who demand rv to just stick to these more mature releases are kinda sad, there’s no other group who can joggle extreme ends of spectrum so creatively and well and yall want them to abondon that ?
rbb is still one of those kpop songs no other groups can perform and outdo the og. this song is giving fifth harmony but everyone is camilla cabello trying her best to outsing others
i loveeee rbb so much. i feel like i love it a tad bit more than bad boy. the instrumentals and the way their vocals are used to match it are just sooo good! it's also a mix of red and velvet
As much as I love Red Velvet's experimental tracks, I hate-hate-hate Zimzalabim so much, especially styling during this era. I still see Wendy's green fluffy top in my nightmares...
I don’t think there is any group that will top Red Velvet when it comes to their discography. Their entire concept is about their duality, and through their careers they have stuck to this concept. All their songs range on a spectrum from red to velvet, and their vocals don’t ever miss. Many groups have tried to recreate what they have done, but you can’t easily recreate the artistry of red velvet.
I became a Red Velvet stan in early 2018 and from it's release til feel my rhythm's release RBB was my favorite rv title track. I was so shocked when I joined kpop spaces on twitter in 2021 and found out that people didn't like it like HUH are we listening to the same song???
I disagree over several points, but you give a very strong argument towards the Red & Velvet concepts still existing & how invaluable it is to the RV girls and I commend that so much because that core is 100% what I agree with & why I still love Red Velvet! I’d watch a follow up on your thoughts on RV & their legacy shaped the Kpop industry &/ SM’s.
in physical pain watching this because for the most part i forgot how long sm haven't believed in red velvet for. i've loved them since 2018 and only love them more now and i don't think they've ever missed with a tt but i recall the month late release really making me panic that sm had given up on them at the time and only hoped to use bad boy as a cash cow. sm will really give them the best music and just never promote or support them, it's so frustrating!!!!!
if im being honsst. in glad red velet didnt go off globally like the other groups expecially after seeing how other groups really changed after they did so. red velet being mostly domestically and asian popular honestly keepbthe group where its at and i like that. though i wish sm would promote them more domestically. also not everything needs to be comercially sucessful why dose everyone feel the need to have something be super marketible. some of ywall act like companys whos focused more on market sucess then just the art like not everyones gotta haveaknstream sucess to be good.
Nope. Red side has way too many favorite tracks of mine, that i could ever afford to lose. RBB is the best and most representative song of the entire Red Velvet to me, absolutely no other groups would be able to pull this song off (maybe F(x), but that would’ve been Luna & Krystal ft. the rest of the group). Also Zimzalabim, Umpah Umpah, Sappy, Dumb Dumb are such masterpieces. Without the red side, Red Velvet’s velvet songs would run the risk of being blended in with a tons of other R&B inspired songs. It would’ve sucked out all the bizarre experimental sounds that Red Velvet get to contribute to the Kpop landscape. Overall, without the Red side, not only Red Velvet would run the risk of compromising their artistic identity, Kpop would’ve missed out on so so much fun, quirks and excitement
I love my cake girls down! It's baffling that people ask them to disregard their 'red' side when it is so much a part of them. their versatility is damn near unmatched and they constantly keep fans on their toes. i also feel if ppl were truly fans, they'd find that velvet side very present in their b-sides, but ppl just like to complain instead. there's something for everyone in their discography
I honestly think the Red concept was obviously not going to last, cute concepts never stick as members grow old, they don't really have the velvet too either tbh, their concept now is just elegance
I remember when this song came out, and I was just annoyed that they had two songs in a row with the same title. But I still liked the song. It just felt like their company wasn’t trying with them, which was frustrating considering their talent. I wasn’t super into RV at the time, at least not enough to be knowledgeable about their concept so this kind of concept pushing definitely went over my head
i loved RBB sm at that time, it was way more my style than Bad Boy, but to me the releases like Zimzalabim and Umpah Umpah would've worked waay better in 2016/17 than 2019 where every1 was focused on Girlcrush concept - which to me RBB is closer to than Zimzalabim. But idk tho, i love psycho as well but since then...
Agree, isn't that why who like RV like RV coz their versality of Music, Concept, their never same kind of song and lastly their crazy harmonization and layering vocal
Red Velvet songs are for people who have invested in their audio systems. You won’t realize who they are as a group with cheap stereo speakers or headphones. You got to make sure your audio can accommodate all their music’s frequencies to appreciate them.
I was gonna say it was a bad decision to release “Really Bad Boy” as the next title track after “Bad Boy” but considering “Power Up” was released in between I’m assuming you were aiming at the reception of people who assumed “Really Bad Boy” was gonna be similar to “Bad Boy”. I think that was a reasonable mistake to make so I wonder why SM labeled the track as such. I would argue that Red Velvet did return to the “Bad Boy” -esque sound with “Psycho”. It’s understandable that people wouldn’t like RBB if they went in with the expectation that it would sound like “Bad Boy” but the Red Concept it was makes Red Velvet popular they have had very popular 'red' songs like “Russian Roulette” and “Red Flavor”. It’s obvious that SM kind of gave up on promoting Red Velvet globally after debuting Aespa even though they had great potential. They rarely go on tour and even rarer outside of Asia even though they were crowned the top 3 girl group from the 3rd generation. RBB did well on billboard charts and is Red Velvet’s 13th Most Streamed Song on Spotify so even though it’s criticized I don’t think severely affected Red Velvet (I wasn’t there during the time the song dropped). I don’t think they would’ve gone as far with just the velvet concept also I’d say “Psycho” covered any ground they would missed by not capitalizing on “Bad Boy”. I think the title tracks they’ve released recently besides “Birthday” were great songs that fit well in the velvet scape. They just needed to be promoted globally and have more events created with fans like world tours. SM dropped the ball with Red Velvet
I agree. Both their Red and Velvet songs are successful, their Red+Velvet mix songs are successful too. They just needed to be promoted internationally and have more tours around the world, and release more contents. That would have kept their momentum going. SM is just incompetent and careless.
Say it louder for the ones in the back. 👍
Tell these to midzy that keep "wannabe this, wannabe that"
Legit. There's this subset of Dives that are always whining and moaning that IVE should go back to the Love Dive concept and sound, when IVE quite literally has an entire EP (I'VE MINE) that showcases that they're versatile and won't stick to just one concept
They did the same to twice saying they should stick with their cute concept 😭
@@Narcissistic-my-god-ilove-it All of ITZY's concepts are pretty much the same, though.
without red concept we wouldn't have 'the red' album which is like one of the best albums in kpop..
Literally
The high pitched scream on RBB is so satisfying and fun to hear, like it really does take the song to another level, cant imagine anyone doing it other than them
and the fact that, apparently, Irene is the one who did it makes it even better, i always thought it was Wendy
@saku906 omg sameee, turns out she hit the highest note in kpop history
@@Stardust-ez4to no it's not the highest note in kpop history😂 It's just the highest note recorded in a kpop song a D7, but there's ppl who have hit higher notes, it's just not in a song, like Wendy's Eb7, and Jessica's dolphin notes
@@chrissyalapo-calg9748 ohh I'm sorry for my misunformation then haha
@Stardust-ez4to hehe no worries, it's not your fault, that's just how it got spread around, and ppl just didn't attach the last part, "in a kpop song"💁🏾♀️
i remember someone calling RBB “dumb dumb if it was a horror concept”
my favorite part of red velvet is teasing chill kill to be like peekaboo/psycho level velvet concept but to be such a red song every other way the song is campy its fun and music video plays with it its a red song wearing a velvet coat while a year later cosmic is the opposite the music video is bright but the song is tonally a velvet track its hopeful yet melancholy - its the velvet song in red coat
How is Chill Kill a red song? Cosmic is not a velvet song as well
@@linpplthe vibes of the song, cosmic sounds so dramatic meanwhile chillkill have the fun and bright chorus.
28 reasons is a Velvet song though o.o
well i disagree cuz thats what made them so different from other groups, that they stick with a specific sound but were able to make it sound different, theyre all r&b tracks but different moods, if they did just velvet alone I cant imagine them getting far, because theres not even a lot of just plain r&b songs in kpop to begin with, theyre bsides for a reason, they sadly dont gain a lot of traction as say more dance pop and upbeat songs.
Red Velvet's most successful song ever is Red Flavor.
And that's a fact.
@@riffgroove not an RV fan but red flavor sounds like its both red and velvet
@theunoriginaldude8345 You are obviously not a fan.
Red Flavor is about as "Red" as it gets.
also we don't give enough credit to how good of an EP RBB is. it has some of red velvets strongest bsides and i think that to this day it's one of the best mini albums of not just red velvet but kpop in general
I still don’t get why everyone ignored it.. people hate fun 😢
honestly, i feel like rbb is the perfect blend between red and velvet and its a song that only they can pull of
Red tracks are actually some of my favorites. I listened to Bad Boy and RBB consecutively for literal years, because they really do work well together, I think. Red tracks are fun and Velvet tracks are pretty. If this group stuck to only one side or another for their concept, they wouldn't be the group I love so much.
Red saved me from depression
I will die for RBB. I listen to it so much more often than BB and it showcases their vocal abilities so much. I'm sad they never perform it live.
I have no idea how to explain this but it just makes complete sense to me lol
i reccomend listening to dreamcatcher bcuz they have a horror concept and have metal elements in their songs!
Red Velvet’s discography will go down in history as the most diverse, addictive, and interesting music. Including the Red songs
Seulgi, you will ALWAYS be famous
i'm not even that into red velvet but it kind of pisses me off whenever so called fans of red velvet claim red velvet should stick to their velvet concept or that they still want another bad boy or another psycho. i mean first of all their red title tracks are bangers. some of their most hated (by international fans) red songs like zimzalabim, rookie, umpah umpah, and yes rbb too are some of my favourite songs from them. i think red velvet genuinely is quite unique in kpop, and maybe even in pop as a whole, in that they are never willing to compromise on their artistic identity to make a profit. they debuted with a dual concept and they're sticking to their guns. i know the members have said they've abandoned the red/velvet dichotomy and try to just make "red velvet" songs now and i think that's genuinely just a logical evolution in red velvet's journey as artists. they're such a strong and well respected group precisely because they never do the same thing twice. it would cheapen bad boy to make a second bad boy. red velvet wouldn't be special anymore if they decided to just keep remaking their most loved velvet songs until everyone gets sick of them. those older songs people keep insisting on are still there to listen to whenever. red velvet should look to the future and keep making music that challenges them as artists and pushes their concept further.
tbh, i would be fine with it if they eventually dropped the red velvet concept all together just as long as they keep trying to do something new. if not new for the industry, at least something new for themselves. as solo artists i don't really care if they want to make 50 songs about the same thing but as a group they have something great right now and it would be insane to stop just to make a bit more money. like, they're chart toppers already. it's not like they're wanting for fans. they're already in the perfect place any artist wants to be in to be able to experiment because all their releases are still successful no matter what kind of weird shit they put out because it's always good. that's literally the dream.
In summary: red velvet is for the arts, not for the charts 🥹
whenever this discourse comes up it annoys me because the same people who cry and kick their feet for only velvet concepts usually completely ignore be natural and one of these nights (their most velvet titles yet)
fun fact but rbb was released on the anniversary of thriller by Michael Jackson which they reference in the mv the release date was very intentional
As a Reveluv since Russian Roulette era, i feel like Red Velvet wouldn't be as versatile as they are right now without their red side like seriously.
Tbh, their Red side has to be my fav side of theirs. I mean RBB and Cookie Jar are my fav title tracks from them... which is kinda wild to say amongst all their other banger titles
Cookie jar is definitely and underappreciated BOP
Whatever you list as your favorite RV song, the same second you will feel like you painfully neglected 10 other bangers.
Lol same
RBB will forever own my whole heart, I adore the theatrical vibe it has so much
i think conceptually, putting rbb after bad boy is so smart. exactly how you said it: showcasing the red and the velvet in succession. but i think in practice it worked against RV, since new fans came for that sexy, mature bad boy vibe and their first comeback was a kitschy, experimentsl red concept they weren't familiar with. so it probably soured new fans at the time, but as a casual fan since red flavour i remember loving how diverse their sound was and how they didn't pigeonhole their sound even after a major success
rbb was literally the first song ive heard of red velvet and i was OBSESSED
I consider RBB to be one of the greatest k-pop songs of all time. I can't name a single group that could pull this off
No one can make me hate RBB or any other Red Velvet song that fans consider ‘bad’
Same. I remember when Zimzalabim first came out and a lot of people were positively SH!TTING all over it. They just didn't get it or weren't ready for it at the time. Fast forward 5 years, and now it's one of their most beloved zany tracks and an absolute crowd fave song at their concerts.
Chill Kill album of the year 2023
I remember back in 2021 or so, I went through and listened to ALL of Red Velvet's songs. If RBB got fans to completely turn on them, I get it, but it really just goes to show the people want more of sexy girl crush vibe and RV was not in the mood.
from the notification i thought the title was gonna be “why rbb broke the red velvet music show win streak” 😭😭😭
For example, "Oh boy" is from their red album but it is far from being cutesy and childish.
in my opinion, really bad boy is what solidified red velvet as a group that pushes diversity and innovation-music & concept wise. ever since, rbb has been my top three red velvet title tracks. it’s perfect from the horror references (concept), styling, song structure, and album cohesiveness. i think its only flaw is how they didn’t integrate this into their album packaging. even so, aside from red velvet, the team behind this really deserves a pat on their backs. and no one in general, even rv themselves, has yet to top this project.
or maybe feel my rhythm!
Can I just say I LOVE your mid-length content! It takes a lot to be succinct but still so articulate.
I’d say it was a good transition point into something like zimzalabim.
one thing I love about red velvet is that you never know what you’re going to get… 😂 everything is a surprise which I love. they can pull off any type of concept, only red velvet can do that.
but surprisingly, Red concept tracks are the most successful, like Red Flavor. RBB on the other hand is a song they can only do.
Ironically their Red songs are some of their biggest domestic hits
@@gongchanx real. It's all on SM that Red Velvet is so underrated these days. Their discography is perfect according to their concept.
Thanks for giving this group your critique (:
im seated for my daily dose of choujimi.
I always look forwards to your uploads!
there’s nothing velvet about rbb thats just pure fun its red 😂
RBB is the song that made me reveluv. It's soo fun and catchy!!!
The peekaboo-bad boy-rbb run was iconic and I will take no objections. It’s when I became a fan!
I remember being there… it was- really bad for them. It was really bad.
i always loved that rbb was literally the red spoof of bad boy. like bad boy was all dark, mysterious and serious and rbb is like someone said try that again but not at all. i mean it's called REALLY BAD BOY it's so unserious it's great
I am a very late Red Velvet fan, Chill Kill is a no skip album for me, and I finally gave into diving into their disco. Admittedly, as a MeU, I was kind of biased against them from the get go but I'm finally getting over that.
hot girls get rbb
nowadays I never listen to bad boy because it's too one note after all this time, I still listen to RBB when I get it on shuffle tho
Kinda same. I listen RBB much more. And sometimes listen to bad boy english version. 😅
rbb was like I warning from sm where rv artistic direction was going in the future
i rediscovered my love for rbb and i have on repeat omggggg
as someone who loves both red and velvet concepts ppl who demand rv to just stick to these more mature releases are kinda sad, there’s no other group who can joggle extreme ends of spectrum so creatively and well and yall want them to abondon that ?
Red Velvet IS the concept.
Me: Wishing that was my idea.
rbb is still one of those kpop songs no other groups can perform and outdo the og. this song is giving fifth harmony but everyone is camilla cabello trying her best to outsing others
why is it even considered as red concept? it's literally cunt but in a sassy bratty femme fatale way
Red Velvet is the group that made me start to listen to K-pop and now it's the only kpop group that i still listen to religiously.
i loveeee rbb so much. i feel like i love it a tad bit more than bad boy. the instrumentals and the way their vocals are used to match it are just sooo good! it's also a mix of red and velvet
this era is literally velvet but put a little red in it, context : dumb dumb but bad boy/peek a boo concept
THAT INTROOOO THOOO
As much as I love Red Velvet's experimental tracks, I hate-hate-hate Zimzalabim so much, especially styling during this era. I still see Wendy's green fluffy top in my nightmares...
I don’t think there is any group that will top Red Velvet when it comes to their discography. Their entire concept is about their duality, and through their careers they have stuck to this concept. All their songs range on a spectrum from red to velvet, and their vocals don’t ever miss. Many groups have tried to recreate what they have done, but you can’t easily recreate the artistry of red velvet.
Unironically, RBB is one of my favourite Rv songs till this day and I got sick of listening to Bad Boy pretty fast
Is RBB was just a Bad Boy 2 they may have succeeded but it wouldn't have been the Red Velvet we know and love
Rbb is a bop and no one can convince me otherwise.
I’m actually the #1 RBB defender
Red Velvet are the Madonna of Kpop. PERIODT~
if im being honsst. in glad red velet didnt go off globally like the other groups expecially after seeing how other groups really changed after they did so. red velet being mostly domestically and asian popular honestly keepbthe group where its at and i like that. though i wish sm would promote them more domestically. also not everything needs to be comercially sucessful why dose everyone feel the need to have something be super marketible. some of ywall act like companys whos focused more on market sucess then just the art like not everyones gotta haveaknstream sucess to be good.
i love both red and velvet the difrence contrast both concept but red velvet does it so well
Great video
Well said 👏🏾👏🏾
and if I said it's their best title track? and album? what then?
You'll be right then.
Then you’ll be right!
Red saved me from depression
I honestly think the Red concept was obviously not going to last, cute concepts never stick as members grow old, they don't really have the velvet too either tbh, their concept now is just elegance
I remember when this song came out, and I was just annoyed that they had two songs in a row with the same title. But I still liked the song. It just felt like their company wasn’t trying with them, which was frustrating considering their talent. I wasn’t super into RV at the time, at least not enough to be knowledgeable about their concept so this kind of concept pushing definitely went over my head
rbb is one of their best tts and i cant understand how people hate it
Rbb and feel my rhythm broke the red velvet concept.
Really Bad Boy is easily one of their best title tracks
i loved RBB sm at that time, it was way more my style than Bad Boy, but to me the releases like Zimzalabim and Umpah Umpah would've worked waay better in 2016/17 than 2019 where every1 was focused on Girlcrush concept - which to me RBB is closer to than Zimzalabim. But idk tho, i love psycho as well but since then...
4:42 did someone say twice
Agree, isn't that why who like RV like RV coz their versality of Music, Concept, their never same kind of song and lastly their crazy harmonization and layering vocal
I really had no idea people didn't like their red side. I mean, my top 3 songs EVER are:
Dumb Dumb
Rookie
Russian Roulette
