We live in a society that is hyper-capitalistic and always in motion. We are often told that we have to be the best version of ourselves and have to optimize the time we have when we are young to find our identities and what's in society and find ways to contribute to it. What is human of us to compare ourselves to others. But as we know comparison is the killer of joy. When we regret optimizing our youth in our teenage years along with our twenties I feel like we ultimately given into the mindset of grinding so we can contribute to society. But I feel like this regrets can also stem from not fitting into the social standards that are built for young people would that be the beauty standards or the financial standards that one is supposed to meet. You shouldn't regret being young and not knowing how to optimize your youth for success because you're not supposed to. You're supposed to grow up and you're supposed to enjoy learning about growing up. You shouldn't have to worry about getting into some kind of standard or else you're not going to be seen as valid. Where you were and where are you currently is exactly where you need to be. Sure in your eyes the people around you might be doing better but that's all relative because at the end of the day, you are the only Jimmie and I am the only me. And you shouldn't have to regret being the only person who is you in any state of time. (Again easier said then done).
IU has recently become such an important figure in my life, even as I'm still catching up on her discography. There is something so beautiful about the art she creates, and I think you captured it perfectly. Lilac feels very her, especially with the range of scenes in the video. I'll always be a huge Hotel del Luna fan, and it feels very representative of Jang Man Wol in many ways. I just think she brings so much good to the table, and I'm so grateful there is an artist like her.
As someone turning 29 at midnight and entering the Goodbye, My Twenties phase: what a lovely message to come across. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts. I have to say I agree about the way we view time and productivity. Connecting those ideas to Lilac just enriches my listening experience!
I also love the interpretation of Lilac being a break-up song full of love, grace and appreciation for the time spent together rather than resentment for a spoiled future. It's the kind of break-up i dream of and i always thought the song was so lovely and bittersweet for that reason. The synth-y, disco-inspired yet kind of melancholic instrumental also really adds to that feeling. Your interpretation however is also super compelling and just shows how good of a lyricist IU really is! This song and its lyrics is one of my all-time favs
WINDFLOWER MENTIONED 🗣🗣🗣 jokes aside I've never actually viewed windflower as this kind of song, but it does make totally make sense. Really enjoying this different perspective of listening to it
as someone who turns 29 next month, i constantly oscillate btwn “be real w yourself, you’re not where you could be bc you haven’t put the work in. shame on you” & “i’m where i’m supposed to be, i couldn’t mentally handle my dreams where im at rn” this vid made some points i think i really need to sit w & maybe realize that 2 things can be true at once… hmm 💭
I’ve always associated Liliac, with feelings of just times of being unsafe but having something that keeps you grounded. Like this is the IU version of Taylor Swift’s Cardigan,Taylor Swift’s New Year’s Day, Sabrina Carpenters All we have is love, etc.
you perfectly encapsulated what i love about these songs. (esp new years day, i've always had a bit of a hard time explaining why its my favorite ts song but you worded it really well)
What an insightful look into this song! I'll need to listen to this album again. Speaking of, I remember there are two versions of this album: HI-LAC, which had a bright lilac cover, and BYE-LAC, which was more muted and monochrome. It aligns really neatly with your take on the good goodbye and turning chapters in your life
