The Beaver Capital - Timberborn - Steeltide #20
Просмотров 20 тыс.12 часов назад
Last episode I completely destroyed the beavers home district. Now it's time to rebuild! My plan is to create a new central tower for all the beavers to live in that is secretly populated with water, allowing for cascading water falls all around. This is a fairly compact but complicated build. Also up: re-visiting the surface of Junker Town. I haven't been a fan of the aqueducts on the surface ...
Adding a water tower to the megadam - Timberborn - Steeltide #19
Просмотров 29 тыс.День назад
This episode is going to be a little different. Rather than run off and build yet another mega project, I'm going to concentrate on what we've already got. In this video: - I add the final layer to the Megadam. This layer, however, has a twist and I turn it into a water tower to keep our main dam topped off - I split the world back into districts for some much needed performance gains - I build...
Building a megadam complex! - Timberborn - Steeltide #18
Просмотров 25 тыс.14 дней назад
We've succeeded in connecting 3 water sources and getting them all piped into a central location. Now we need a place to store it all! In this video I expand the dam at the top of the river into a giant multi-terraced sealed megadam complex with room for industry hidden deep within it. This is one of my most complicated builds yet, and involves mixing strange shapes, tunnels, pipes, and water! ...
Connecting the last source of water on the map - Timberborn - Steeltide #17
Просмотров 45 тыс.21 день назад
What do you get when you take a pipe and mix it with an aqueduct? The causeway! To continue to grow our water works I've decided to tap into the last free source of water of the map. And because I want to make my life difficult, for some reason I decide to make a twisting, winding elevated pipe instead of something nice and square. In this video I also start laying the ground work for our north...
We need more power! - Timberborn - Steeltide #16
Просмотров 21 тыс.Месяц назад
With the completion of Junker Town we have a new problem: all those new factories and buts are putting a bit strain on our power grid. Our 17 grid that we made episodes ago is now at capacity! The colony must continue to grow, so in this episode I go about tapping into some additional bad water sources and greatly increasing the size of our water wheel power plant. I also discover something sur...

It's time to start building Junkertown: a giant underground city built into a mountain that will be the future home of our bots. After lots of work in earlier episodes of relocating all of our production, we just have some final layers to dynamite and then construction can be begin! In this video we're going to shape the rest of the basin, finishing hollowing out the mountain, build a giant tow...
Connecting ALL the bad water sources on the map - Timberborn - Steeltide #13
Просмотров 28 тыс.Месяц назад
The quest to build Junkertown continues. The next big problem? To continue hollowing out the mountain we need to move all our existing infrastructure off of the top. And that includes all our bad water that is powering our power plant. To keep our bad-water power plant running we're going to need to pipe bad water from new sources all the way on the other side of the map. Will things go wrong? ...
Tapping into a new water source - Timberborn - Steeltide #12

Piping water across the map - Timberborn - Steeltide #11
Просмотров 38 тыс.2 месяца назад
It's time to tap into a new water source! So far we've been keeping our colony going with our first main water source. Unfortunately, we're reaching a point where that source alone is not enough to fill up all our dams in a single wet season. To fix this, we're going to build a pipe that spans half the map and delivers water deep underground and up to the very top of our mesa. I also spend some...
Connecting the colony to power - Timberborn - Steeltide #10

I wonder if putting impermeable floors on top of water by using structures underneath does anything to evaporation. It would be very useful on hard mode with lengthy droughts to reduce evaporation.

The 2.2cms per waterfall edge explanation really helped. I've seen other videos that said "There is waterfall limit, just make this pattern" without explaining why... Often times their weird pattern didn't fit my build. Without knowing what's going on I wasn't able to modify my design. After watching your video I was able to modify my design and doubled my waterwheel output.

A few interesting things you missed: (1) IMPORTANT: Water Sources on the edge of maps Easily the third most common water question on the Timberborn discord, (#1 is the waterfall limit, #2 is irrigation). Water cannot leave the map from a water column if the water source is on the edge of the map. In all other cases, water sources will pass water without blocking it. (2) DIY Badwater Dome Since Update 6 introduced impermeable floors, it is possible to seal a badwater source (OR goodwater source) by building a closed box of levees and impermeable floors around it. This is the only way to seal a good water source. (3) Water Height Limit. The height limit for water is elevation 34, two full blocks above the maximum build height. As such, it can spill over even a maximum height dam. (4) Waterwheels and CMS Because of how CMS is calculated, waterwheels will register all of the flow beneath them, even if they are on stilts, as long as the water is above the bottom of the wheel and below the axle. This can lead to insane cases where waterwheels are generating 5000+ Horsepower each. (5) The Septic Tank. By stacking 1-high layers of overhangs with impermeable floors on them, you can create a chamber with a very, very high rate of evaporation. This works because evaporation is calculated per water column, and impermeable floors split the water column into multiple units. As the name implies, it is potentially capable of evaporating water as fast as the sources on the map can provide it.

Pumping good water from a mixed source will also concentrate the bad water. This is more noticeable in stagnate pools

Man I always love your video's!!! always helpful.. always amazing builds!!! <3 <3 11:55 You were talking about water folding. Water folding doesnt work when you have a long straight path like you had shown... think of it this way.. you have a river thats 5 tiles wide, and runs on ground level 5... where you make the waterfall down to level 4.. if you have the drop down look like an arrow pointed UPstream. that allows the water to move forward a tile as well as waterfall down, then the next it repeats.. so going from a 5 wide even drop thats 11 CMS, fut folding will give you 19.8.. BUT... since it all folds toward the center.. it speeds up the water in the center line :D Hope that helps! :D .... 13:12 to help with the water backing up.. at the corner I have the drop to the next line diagonal so it gives 6.6cms instead of 4.4 .. it helps a little.. But the eff3ct still remains...

Thanks for the video. Very informative, concise and clearly explained. There is only one thing that I've come away a little puzzled about: your explanation of floodgates and sluices being about upstream/downstream height makes sense, but I would've liked some more practical examples of their use. What specific applications require the use of one, the other or perhaps both? (Apart from the badwater diversion, you covered that one.) Are there any particular floodgate/sluice setups that are particularly flexible or useful? If you feel like making an addendum video to this one, I'd very much like to see that.

I have always thought irrigation (or water draining through the ground) rather than evaporation made more sense. Hence, larger bodies of water don't drain as quickly as a small puddle into the ground. This makes me wonder how high cms rivers vs. low cms rivers are affected by this "draining/evaporation", if there is any difference. It also makes me wonder how impermeable floors (or completely sealed aqueducts vs. on-land rivers) and irrigation barriers affect this "draining/evaporation" effect.

    • @Blackwing2345635
      @Blackwing2345635 14 часов назад

      >I have always thought irrigation Even IRL evaporation is immense. Soil will become saturated, even sands or pebble. You can see it in long rains - at some point soil stops accepting water and puddles appear even on plowed soil. As for the game - there are only calculations for "evaporation". Nothing additional about irrigation. Fun fact - there is dynamic wind in the game. It doesn't affect evaporation, though. IRL it sure does, and does a lot. >This makes me wonder how high cms rivers vs. low cms rivers Even for low-cms pretty insignificant, except extreme cases. I never directly calculated, but evaporation loses for 3x3 are something in between 10 and 15 days per tile. 1cms will drain/refill this volume in less then an hour IIRC. It is so insignificant, that beaver-operated fluid dump will run on like 15% productivity with 18 hours working day to keep 3x3 topped up) BUT this can lead to annoying effects with staged mechanical pumps. Intermediate stages will dry out in long run, if there is the same number of down and up stream pumps. >It also makes me wonder how impermeable floors ... and irrigation barriers They don't. As simple as that. TL;DR: the only thing that matters is surface shape. P.s. The best shapes are the closest to square with 3+ tiles sides (the game is based on squares, diagonal distance equals to a side distance). The worst - a single tile. The second worst - 1-tile wide line.

You can decrease water level difference in your "snake" by providing smoother turns to it. I've tested it recently, after watched your tests with water levels in "snake" power plant in steeltide series.
