Claude Pierray, made in Paris in 1709. Beautiful antique instrument. Deep, dark, round tone. Finest of the early French makers, Claude Pierray was a contemporary of Jacques Boquay. Boquay's work was more highly priced during their lifetimes despite Pierray's superiority as a craftsman and his finer materials, but in general their instruments are similar in appearance. Pierray's output, which is...

    That channel is pure gold. Great instrument, great player, great luthier and great sound engineering! How do you manage to capture so much depth and detail in such a small space? Is that wood on the wall behind you? Thank you for your videos!!

    • @thestigofviolin
      @thestigofviolin 26 дней назад

      Thanks for your feedback, I’m happy that you like the concept of this channel! To answer your question, the room I use to record these videos has wooden walls and ceiling, which do affect the acoustics in a positive way (considering its small size). In terms of recording equipment, I use a very decent but non-professional microphone that connects to my phone which makes it quick and easy to setup and record. So, both of these (aspects) can still be improved and will do so as the channel grows further.

    Pierre Fournier appeared with a Miremont cello, which had extensive painted decoration on its back, at a Bach Suites festival in Toronto about 1979 or ‘80. A Canadian cellist, who also owned a Miremont, spoke with him backstage about these instruments; Fournier said, “Mais, gardez-le précieusement!” (I don’t speak French and am an old man trusting my memory here) to attest his very high regard for this maker’s work. Its sound in a hall was certainly that of the finest echelon of cellos; it seemed quite reasonable that Fournier would much prefer to tour with the Miremont than with his Matteo Goffriller.

    What strings you using? How much does this affect the true sound of the violin ?

    • @thestigofviolin
      @thestigofviolin 2 месяца назад

      Good question, with no conclusive answer to date. More testing has to be done and I would certainly be interested in taking part and learning more about that myself! So far, my personal feeling is that different tensions and the actual “state” (old vs new) of the strings have more impact on the way an instrument performs than the choice of a brand. New sets will always perform better and sound brighter (after the “break-in” period) than older ones on any instrument. Having said that, it is also personal preference due to habits that each player develops with his/her favourite brand over the years and there may be a case for certain instruments combining better with one brand over another (remains to be seen). I will, however, use the same set of strings on all instruments in the future to avoid unnecessary doubts from viewers and to further improve the integrity of these tests. Thanks for bringing it up 👍
